The first film in the Child’s Play series is by far the scariest and has the darkest tone. As a stand-alone horror film, it’s pretty creepy and uses the premise of a killer doll to good effect. This one just barely fits with the rest of the series, which really gets going with the first sequel.

Chucky has always been my favorite of the slasher “heroes” (just barely edging out Freddy) mostly due to Brad Dourif’s outstanding voice performance. He really elevates a character that should by all rights be nothing but camp. I also got to follow this series from the beginning, whereas others like Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday the 13th were already well-established by the time I was old enough to discover them.

The reason why I have to give this movie a perfect score is because… well…. it literally scarred my childhood. I was around 6 years old when this film first came out and simply seeing the commercials on TV made me fear for my life that Chucky was always waiting around dark corners, ready to stab my face off. And after I actually watched the film(or tried to I should say) simply made my fears even worse. No movie, or character I should say, has given me that amount of terror and since the whole point of horror movies is to scare you, I can give this no less than 5 perfect skulls.

Child’s play one of the best movies of all time and has dark humor, scares, and a few gruesome kills. In case you didn’t know Child’s play is about a kid who turns 6 on his birthday and he wants the Good toy doll. So his mother buys it from a hobo and gives it to her son as a present. Although they don’t know it came alive. I thought the film was fantastic. Once Andy finally gets the doll Chucky the scares begin. In the first act you don’t see Chucky but you do see someone walking down the stairs. Then Andy tells his mother that Chucky did all of this but his mother doesn’t believe him. She finally knows that the doll is alive and no one believes her. So she goes everywhere just to get help. Besides the scares there is also dark humor. Like in the movie a lady says “What an ugly doll” and the doll replies “screw you”. I think that Child’s play is creepy, scary, and very funny.

Child’s Play is an effectively creepy movie with some genuine scares, good kills and dark humor. The scene where Andy’s mom (played by Catherine Hicks) realizes there are no batteries in the doll is one of the best. I really enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it to anyone who thinks dolls and clowns are creepy. Enjoy!

I am a big fan of the Child’s Play movies, especially Child’s Play 2. However rewatching this movie, I can’t help but feel it is really dated. I am very much looking foward to a remake of this movie because I think the story is very good but the special effects, although at the time may have been great, are very dated now in 2008.

I don’t know why everyone loves this movie so much, doll gets possesed starts killing people. To me that is a shit storyline, the humor in it wasn’t even that good. The deaths were lame and the doll didn’t look scary at all. It looked like something of playschool for christ’s sake. The ending was shit and wasn’t memorable in any way and the amount of sequels they did after this movie………………WTF!?!?!?! I mean it was just bareley good the first time. The acting wasn’t too bad, the voice for chucky was a good choice. Overall this movie was just bareley good the first time and my worst fear would be having to sit through it again. My friend loves the franchise and I went over to his house to have a child’s play marathon and the first movie was alright but after that it got worse and worse and as for “the seed of chucky”……………..What were they thinking???? I give this movie a 3/10 and in my opinion it dosen’t deserve anything more.

A very effective and chilling movie. Unlike the sequels Chucky stayed in the background and this movie was more of a crime thriller and concentrated more on the story of Andy and his trying to convince everyone that his doll was alive. By not showing as much Chucky it made the story more believable and when the film makers showed scenes of Chucky actually being alive it put you on the edge of your seat. The scene when Chucky is first shown alive when Alex’s mother is about to throw him in the fire made me jump on first viewing all those years ago. A great cast including ‘Jerry Dandridge’ himself, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O Hara as Alex’s mother, Dina Minahoff and of course Brad Douriff make this film very enjoyable and the use of black comedy mixed with thrills make one to watch over and over .

Child’s Play is the movie that took me the most time to recover. By MY slasher standards, he beats Freddy, Jason, and even Michael. Maybe because I watched this as a kid. I may have to watch this again to be sure.

I remember having issues walking into movie stores and and being horrified to even see the vhs case of this movie. i watched it once, when i was like 5( well watching everyone horror movie on the planet.)
and couldn’t watch it until is was in my teens. Chucky honestly scared my childhood.

After watching it after getting over my fear And watching the films I didn’t find them scary at all but, at the end of the day, I will always remember it for making my stomach hurt every time I walked into the horror section new movie store, and preying they didn’t have a copy of Childs play. So I didn’t have to see chucky.

so for that, I give it a ten.

Child’s Play is amazing. There, I said it. It’s something you’ve heard before, and you’ll hear it again from me. Child’s Play is amazing! This classic slasher flick is what started it all. Chucky, the fearless living doll, with a dark humourous side, is possessed and basically, goes on a killing rampage. A pretty simple story, too basic though, but fans of the series will know that this simple storyline will eventually become a big part of the plot. Chuckey isn’t the average looking doll either, the film makers obviously wanted him to look menacing, and I have to say they did a great job. Aside from the slightly dissapointing plot, the overall movie is grand. The acting is wonderful, and the voice of Chucky is menacing, and superb. The set pieces, the wonderful dark humour, the gory deaths and the overall feel of this movie is perfect, and that’s what makes it a solid horror, even now.

Overall, a wonderful horror, that you and your friends will enjoy on a dark night, with a bowl of popcorn. A humourous, horror fest.

    9/10

i can see how Chucky became a famous killer doll. if a doll tells you that you can be their friend to the end, the end is pretty much closer than you think.

I’m going to have to agree with the majority on this one. The original Child’s Play freaked the hell out of me when I was a child. But I absobultley loved that feeling. Even now [watchint it right now], it scares me, and not only because I remember the fright as a child, but as an actually well made horror movie.

The scene where she picks up the doll box and the batteries drop out is one of the scariest! I was quaking in my doc’s. :D

Though the series DEFINATLEY does not stay true to this masterpieces, I still enjoy them for other reasons.

This movie is much darker, a serious horror movie, while the others are kind of playing up the campyness, and the humor [especially bride], I still like them, but in a different context.

This movie freaked me out as a kid too but viewing it again so many years later i realize the movie is pretty tedious, like think about it a doll goes around killing people and no one can do anything about it. You just want to tell this fucking morons “Hey its a fucking doll, your bigger than he is so just fucking kick him stomp him or you could just lock him in a cage and keep him as a pet” Besides that it is a classic

This movie gives you great detail on what is going on and plays it out great. Chucky is a great 3 foot slasher, his laugh and signature saying “HI I’M CHUCKY WANA PLAY” is imprinted in horror history.

The scariest ‘Chucky’ movie, and the best. I had nightmares about this as a kid! Child’s Play definitely works as a serious horror, with a bit of dark comedy thrown in. Chucky coming alive was brilliant.

I only wish they expanded a bit more that Andy could have been the killer. Maybe fool the audience for a little bit longer.

The Child’s Play franchise with the loveably insane Chucky doll has become a pop culture icon. With five films and more to come, it hasn’t quite reached the legendary status of Jason, Freddy, and Michael Myers, but Chucky continues to slash his way to the top.

Tom Holland directed the original 1988 film as well as the Stephen King adaptations of “The Langoliers” and “Thinner”. Set in Chicago this is the story of a widowed mother (Catherine Hicks) and her son Andy (Alex Vincent). Andy is having a birthday and wants a “Good Guy” doll. It’s kind of like the boys version of a Cabbage Patch Kid. His mother buys one from a street peddler and Andy couldn’t be happier. Little do they know that the doll is inhabited by the soul of a serial killer the lakeside strangler Charles Lee Ray. Chucky talks to Andy, but when things start to happen and he blames the doll. Obviously nobody believes him, even his mother.

Chucky is pure satanic evil with a dirty mouth to match. Like Freddy Krueger he has a string funny one-liner that go to embarrassingly bad lengths in the later sequels. Chris Sarandon plays a detective investigating the mysterious murders and is finally convinced that Chucky is to blame. But who will believe him? This movie also has several of the now more familiar horror clichés. The fake scare followed by the real one, Chucky comes back to life about three times, nobody believes the little kid. The doll effects are pretty good, and Chucky seems to be acting circles around Sarandon’s character. All in all the acting is quite good as well as the production values. This is another classic essential 80′s horror movie. What a decade!

first scary movie I ever saw, when I was like 3 or 4, and I was scarred for life. It scared me so bad I put all my dolls in storage. As a little girl who did nothing but play with dolls, it ruined me. I wouldn’t go into Spencer’s gifts because they sold the Chucky dolls there. I am appalled that I’m so obsessed with horror now, because I was so anti-fear. But I honestly think Chucky is the reason, hahaha. Now I look back at Chucky as a hilarious memory, and this movie now is just a classic! It’s funny as hell and I have to thank Brad Douriff for creating him and leading me to the dark side essentially XD

My one gripe is that Chucky himself…because of Brad Dourif (sorry everybody) was the total wrong voice for this demonic doll. Nothing creepy about Dourif’s voice at all.

If you haven’t heard of Chucky the killer doll at least once in your life, you’ve been living under a rock. He is a classic, a legend, a horror icon all on his own. I can’t get enough of the Chucky franchise, I love all of them to pieces and consider myself a very big fan of all movies, even if down the road horror was lost with SOC.

Child’s Play is easily the darkest and scariest movie out of the entire series. Chucky’s comedic one liners don’t come as often in this one, the tone is much more creepy, and it’s pretty realistic for a movie about a serial killer transforming his soul into the body of a plastic doll. I owe this movie my love for horror, because without it I would have probably never discovered how great horror really is. I was only a little girl when my mom found Child’s Play on TV right before we were getting ready for bed time. Needless to stay Chucky has stayed with me forever. I had to have someone accompany to the bathroom, drove my mom crazy when I followed her everywhere around the house, etc.

Now here I am, a huge fan of the Child’s Play series. I do think that Chucky is very underrated when it comes to horror icons, though I know a lot of people would disagree. The movie has also sparked my love for Brad Dourif, who does a beyond perfect job of voicing the killer doll. He can easily put so much anger in his voice that it leaves a viewer shaken moments after. This is the kind of movie that is a perfect horror.

The original Child’s Play is one of the most fascinating and treasured Horror films back in the early 80′s since A Nightmare On Elm Street. I really like the first Child’s Play and it is the best in the series since the first sequel and the second sequel better than the last two sequels Bride of Chucky and Seed Of Chucky seriously this film had the right amount of special effects that are really memorable and the entire concept of the first movie is seriously amazing and it is really memorable to watch this film and the introduction of Chucky is really nice and incredible and it really delivered the right amount of jolts and thrills that the last two sequels removed(Bride of Chucky and Seed Of Chucky) which I got annoyed with so far. What’s great about Child’s Play is that this film had an amazing concept than the last two sequels and this film along with the first and second sequels are really serious and everything was perfect with the first three Child’s Play sequels. I find this film to be absolutely perfect from start to finish. This movie really delivered the goods and the right amount of thrills and scares and Chucky was scarier and meaner in this film along with the second and third film and he was more serious in this movie than in the new sequels because in the new sequels he became a joke he wasn’t scary or creepy he was just pointless and it would have been better if the new sequels followed the exact same path of the first three Child’s Play movies which I only wished for so far. This movie had some excellent body counts but the kills itself are not gory at all unlike in the first and second sequels there was some good gore here there’s just less gore effects but I rather praised for the special effects and the thrills and jump scares that were used in the film which I personally enjoy about Child’s Play and what I also enjoy about this film is that the film has a lot of incredible camera work scenes each scene has a lot of really nice camera work which I enjoy so far in the movie. The pacing is well written in Child’s Play thanks to a powerful and striking writing to Child’s Play creator Don Mancini he really did a unique and incredible job with this franchise so far. The acting is great in the movie the performances from Alex Vincent, Brad Dourif and Chris Sarandon are really good in the film and Brad Dourif did an excellent job with his performance as the main antagonist Chucky in the first Child’s Play so far even on the later on sequels he was really good oh and Alex Vincent was really good with his performance in the first Child’s Play as Andy even on the first sequel as well. Director Tom Holland did a really good job with his directing with this movie and I’m proud with his work so far I hope he makes another good movie in one of these days again. Overall Child’s Play gets a 10/10

This is a very good movie. Everyone remember Chucky the killer doll and the first it’s always the best.
