Spoiler Alert!
Plot: this movie had a pretty strong storyline “routine mission turns into just survive!” i was kind of skeptical of this movie, because i thought the acting was going to be bad but…to tell you the truth, i thought it was pretty good, i LOVED the ending….and the “Sacrifices in Vein” added on to the hopelessness you felt for these guys. 5/5
Gore: the gore was pretty sweet, couple intestine shots, and blood splatters was just enough to keep me satisfied throughout the movie. 4/5
Downfall: at some parts it was corny…but it wasnt all that bad…it had enough corniness to be enjoyable
Closing Statement: go watch this movie, a boxing fight between a werewolf and a human? AWESOME!….the ending SAWEET!…and its really enjoyable
i strong debut by neil marshall who has proven to be the best horror director today
Seriously vies for spot as one of the best werewolf films ever made, certainly in the last few years. The actors were excellent; i actually cared what happened to them. The directing was great, and the storyline fresh. I think the relationship between characters is what really drives the movie…oh yea, and the werewolves. The effects were perfect and the monsters believable, proving once again that you don’t need cgi to make a good werewolf. A must have for anyone who even cares about horror movies.
One of the best were wolf flms ever made.
Not a bad werewolf movie. It is one of the best out there. SOme very good gore effects and the werewolfs were crazy. Good movie.
best werewolf movie ever made.
I don’t know guys. Some things about this movie were plain amazing, while others were just . . . not. The 10/10 ratings come from people who are just so hyped about the nostalgia of Aliens and Predator, which the movie is pretty much dependent. Without those movies it wouldn’t be as good, but without them it would be more original but a little cheesier.
The opening could have been done without. The ending could have been a bit less of a cliché. The middle could have been a bit less boring. The gore effects were sub-par. The plot set up was a bit sub-par, as well. But, still, the movie was good and maybe better than the 8/10 I gave it, but I think the average rating needs to be a little lower. Yes, it was original and smart: two things The Decent totally lacked.
It’s easily the best werewolf movie I’ve ever seen, but werewolves really aren’t much to get excited about. At least Marshall didn’t stoop to the level of Underworld and make the werewolves look downright retarded–they were cool looking in this movie.
As a little bonus, the anti-chivalry message made me happy. “If you’re kind to a woman just because she’s a woman you’ll get yourself killed.” Best quote in a while, Marshall.
Cost me $10. I think it was well worth that.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen this again and I still like it. Maybe the beginning could have been a little less military and more gore. Still a pretty good movie can’t wait for Dog Soldiers Fresh Meat.
Excellent film…another one of my favorite werewolf films..
Wonderful filmaking with an obviously low budget, creative filmaking, interesting characters, but a somewhat predictable ending with one of the female characters, it overall wasnt a bad film at all, especially for a werewolf related film.
Best Werewolf Movie ever made. This was something I was hoping that werewolf genre would have done long time back.
Sean Pertwee really made this movie for me. After seeing him im Event Horizon I thought he was awesome. The movie had a strong story and good build up the the climax. Kevin McKidd was also awesome as the hero. Nice practical effects and yes, the human/werewolf boxing match. Freakin saweeetttt
. this is indeed, by far, the best werewolf movie i have seen .
One of the best werewolf movies out there, with the best werewolf costumes I’ve seen on film yet.
great wolf action movie
this was probably one of the best werewolf movies to watch without getting nostalgic. the creatures were definately intimidating. there still isnt a recent addition to the werewolf genre that could beat this.
this film is bl**dy great!!I have just watched it again and i love it!!Sean pertwee is another good reason to watch it!!This film is really scary and will give the shivers even after it has finished!!Don’t watch it alone!!
By far , one of the best non-traditional werewolf movies. No CGI. Just out and out action and a really kinda twisted ending. Love love love it..
One of the best werewolf movies period. Its dark and creepy and the acting was top notch. The werewolfs were very real and intimidating . A must hav for every horror fan.
One of the best Werewolf movies ever made. I got this on dvd a couple of years ago on impulse because it just looked cool and I was not let down.
Dog soldiers and American werewolf in london are the modern day classic werewolf films. anyone who does not like werewolf films catch this one it may change your mind.
One of my favourite movies- entertaining, funny, gory and filled with characters that are interesting and who you actually give a dam about
This is one of the best werewolf movies , good FXs and a nice lookin cast !!!!!!!! The story works and you understand whats going on !!!
when i saw the movie cover i thought this movie was gonna be stupid but really, i actually liked it.
Wow, this movie was great. It’s as good as the overrated An American Werewolf in London, but I didn’t like it quite as much as Ginger Snaps, which to me is the best werewolf film ever made.
Dog Soldiers is a gory thrill ride from start to finish, and even though there isn’t much of a story and the ending is too abrupt, it makes for great watching. It’s funny, too!
Best werewolf movie along with ginger snaps! This werewolf shows some awsome gore and i loved every minute of it.
“Sausages.”
The only thing this movie lacked was Bruce Campbell.
If you liked the movie, listen to the commentary track, probably one of the best commentaries I’ve ever listened to.
Excellent werewolf movie. Simple premise superbly executed. I wasn’t expecting it to be as gory as it was so was pleasantly suprised. If you love monster movies then this will flick your switch
AWESOME FLICK!!! Bloody and disgusting as it should be! One of the best werewolf movies ever made…a classic!
i like this movie alot the 1st time i seen it on the Sci Fi Channel
but after i bought it like two years later it didn’t seem as cool but it’s still an ok movie =]
I thought that dog soldiers was the best werewolf movie I have ever seen.
Storyline: A group of soldiers are on a training mission when they are attacked by werewolfs and forced to take refuge in a old house in the middle of nowhere. The group are slowly killed off one by one until the final stand when the soldiers come out on top. 9/10
Acting: The acting in this movie was very good and the characters were well developed. The reactions of the characters were also very realistic. 10/10
Special Effects: The effects in this movie were totally bad ass, the movie was chock full of guns, mad looking werewolves and gore. This movie goes to show that cgi is not always needed. 9/10
Best Scene: The best scene was when spoon starting to have a good old fashioned bare knuckle brawl with the werewolves when out of ammo. 10/10
Ending: The ending was very, very good and the little twist was also nice. The only bad bit was when my fav character sarge died.
9/10
Overall dog soldiers was a mad werewolf action packed gory adventure into the world of survival and I give it 9/10
simply one of the best werewolf movies ever made….ever
definitely, the best werewolf movie ever, just awesome.
I loved this flick!! ‘An American Werewolf in London’ is my favorite werewolf movie, but this is definitely second!
THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING SICK!!!!!
Amazing movie.
the best werewolf movie ever i loved it fun and cool.
There are so many aspects of this film that would have become completely unbearable if it had been produced by a major studio.
Just think about it… CG werewolves, a romantic subplot, a pg-13 rating… basically it would have become Van Helsing.
Which isn’t too say that all big budget movies are bad and that all indy films are good, but I would certainly trade a bit of glossy production value for an unrepentant ‘R’ rating and NO CG effects.
It’s not a ‘perfect’ film, it certainly has it’s flaws but you’re honestly having too much fun to even really notice them.
My suggestion: Instead of heading to theatre to catch “The Mummy 8″ or “Resident Evil: Whatever” Stay home, plug in this DVD and thank all that is unholy that horror films like this still get made.
dog soldiers was an out of nowhere gem for me what a different werewolf film with great charecters in it,ample gore and …well it just works watch it!
i rented this movie 7 years ago cause i couldnt find anything at the video store, and i figured this dumb shit might have some naked girls and gore to entertain me, but it turned out to be a great horror movie, the opening werewolf sequence b4 they get to the house is one of the scariest most intense scenes ive ever seen in a horror movie. Great movie
Dog Soldiers starts off as a movie you are regretting to watch, just some stupid low budget bad dialogue camp fest or something. But the movie over time grows on you, you start to really enjoy what is going on and the movie is a lot of fun.
I loved this movie, it is awesome, and gory too
. The werewolves don’t look half bad and it is an easy movie to watch. This movie is also done by Neil Marshall who did the Descent and Doomsday so if you liked either one of those check this one out and you won’t be dissapointed.
I give this movie an 8/10 because it is just so awesome and fun and gory. 8/10!
As much as I love werewolves as a horror movie creature, werewolf movies usually don’t work for me. Either they go all CGI and look ridiculous, or they take a practical effects approach and can’t pull off the look with the budget they have. This movie did a great job of keeping the werewolves visually interesting without overreaching the effects budget.
I was initially disappointed that the movie doesn’t have the traditional “transformation” scene, on reflection though, I realized they probably knew they couldn’t pull it off in a satisfactory manner and therefore didn’t put in a half-assed effort.
Overall the movie does a good job of building and maintaining tension. As a combination chase film/home invasion story, the feeling that the cast is in constant peril is pitch perfect in that knot-in-your-stomach way.
Highly recommended.
Werewolves are officially scary again. What director Neil Marshall delivers is a heart-pounding, action-packed horror film that attacks you and leaves you for dead. This creature feature combines the ridiculousness of The Evil Dead and the hardcore seriousness of something like The Descent, and the two are woven together perfectly. The first time I watched this film, I figured it to be a good movie, but after the second time, I figure it to be a great movie. This film has top-notch acting, awesome gore effects, tons of action-packed thrills, awesome location and cinematography, etc. Marshall’s full-length debut does not disappoint in any aspect. First, the acting. Sean Pertwee plays the usual tough guy role and does a fantastic job. Kevin McKidd, now a part of Grey’s Anatomy, the show that makes women swoon over people like Patrick Dempsey, plays Private Cooper, a soldier who follows orders, but disobeys them from time to time when he feels he has to. Emma Cleasby plays the zoologist who just happens to be an expert in lycanthropy, and just happens to stumble upon the platoon after the first attack. She does a fantastic job, as well. And who can forget Spoon? Played by Darren Morfitt, Spoon is a mildly psychopathic soldier whose violent outbursts keep you entertained along with the other soldier versus werewolf combat. Liam Cunningham does well as a Special Ops captain who just does not give a fuck. Anyway, almost everybody does a fine job acting in their various roles. Second, the action thrills pack just enough punch to keep you on the edge of your seat and begging for more. Plus, the fact that the soldiers can’t kill any of the werewolves, except by explosions or silver, which are reserved for the end, means that there will be loads of werewolf violence. Third, the location and cinematography is amazing. Sure, it would have been nice to see the real mountains and forest of Scotland, rather than the mountains and forest of Luxembourg, but that does not really matter because the shots are spectacular. Plus, I kind of have a weakness for films that take place in such locations, like Severance and The Edge. Finally, the special effects and gore are amazing. The werewolves do not look fake at all and that is what makes them scary. Now, the gore effects are the best I have ever seen, but goddamn it, they were awesome. Fortunately, those gore effects would improve with Neil Marshall’s later films like The Descent and Doomsday. There is, however, one problem that this film has, and it comes in the form of a question; how much did you really like it? The first time I watched this film, I thought I had a pretty good grasp on how good I thought the movie was. But, after I watched it the second time, I kept trying to decide how much I liked it and it made me undermine the film a little. But besides that, Dog Soldiers is a ferocious film that is all bark and all bite (pun intended), and I can’t wait until I hear more news about Neil Marshall’s upcoming films like Centurion or other horror films that he might do.
Like Predator with Werewolves, oh & accents. All and all, really entertaining, lots of action, gore & a shit load of pretty cool beasties!
I saw this movie knowing nothing about it. I thought THE DESCENT was fantastic, so I wanted to see if his other movie could match it. Well, it didn’t just match it, it destroyed it, DOG SOLDIERS was one of the best films I’ve seen in a long while, how had I not seen this film until just recently? Anyway, the first thing I noticed about this movie was that the dialogue was SO engaging. I loved the accents, the quick back-and-forths, and the writing. The next thing I noticed was the werewolves struck me as a bit goofy upon first appearance. At this point I was expecting disappointment. Fortunately, those expectations were quickly tossed out the window about ten seconds into the ‘main’ action sequence. The entire second act of the film is a superbly orchestrated panic; the soldiers spend the night trying to keep the wolves out of the safehouse, in a visceral and relentless extended action scene. Terrific. The end twist I thought was clever but not fully fleshed out, but who cares? This movie just created the perfect blend of action and horror, everything they needed to do right they did. This was one of the first movies I’ve seen (at least the first one I can remember, anyway) where I wanted to immediately press “play movie” again on the DVD menu screen just after finishing the film.
This movie is awesome. Go watch it right now or i’ll eat your face
I saw this movie because my son recommended it. I didnt see it right away but then I saw The Descent for my birthday movie and fell in love with it. I was surprised how much I like Dog Soldiers. Its cheaply made, with special effects that are so out there, they sometimes come across as corny. None of it matters. Cool story with cool characters and creatures plus tons of fun equals a great time.
Dog soldiers was one of the most campiest film i have ever seen. it was an independent horror film that was just plain awesome. The werewolves were amazing looking and i couldnt help but smile everytime a werewolf slaughtered a soldier. Director Neil Marshall (The Descent) knows how to make a creature feature. His first movie was definitely exceptional and i would recommend it to anybody looking for a fun time.
This film is a classic….great humour, great performances (Sean Pertwee in particular for me), some good gore, a desperate ‘Zulu’esque struggle to keep the werewolves out, some of the best human / werewolf fight scenes ever. Another triumph for British cinema
I am truly sorry, but I didn’t like it. It left me feeling incredibly wronged.
It was okay, Nothing amazed me like it did for many others.
I love this campy flick! Great Wolves, story was decent, good acting, and I did fall in love with Sean P. I would recommend it
My absolute favorite Werewolf movie of all time.
When my friend suggested this to me I thought it was going to be completely terrible…boy was I wrong.
The Werewolf costumes were actually well done *gasp* and so was the blood and gore.
And the ending actually surprised me
the werewolf costumes looked like shit, the gore was ok, overall the movie was decent.
I loved this movie, it was like aliens and predator mixed with werewolves. Absolute genieus flick and one of the best horror debuts of all time by Neil Marshal.
Talk about overrated, this movie had some intense action and gore, great werewolves practical fx, but bad cheesy acting. I didn’t like the characters, most of the time it’s just shouting. Predator and Aliens had memorable characters, not this. The score was also nothing special. I give it 3/5.
One of the best if not the best horror film I’ve ever seen in my life.
Honestly, its been a while since I’ve seen this movie, but do know that its one of the better werewolf movies that I have seen, and I did like the werewolf costumes.
This film is really funny it’s not a horror film it wasn’t written as a horror, I was entertained by this film and I could watch it all day. Really funny & generally fun to watch.
Rated 8 skulls because this is a horror site & not a comedy site, 10 otherwise.
great anf funny British horror comedy for fans of ‘The Cottage’ or ‘Shaun of the dead’
Dog soldiers is a blast to watch. Full of action, werewolves and gore.
It is by far the best Fun Werewolf movie ever made… yes it has bad werewolf costumes, cheesy acting and some very clinched moments but I love it.It is by far the most entertaining werewolf movie ever made.Yes I liked it helluva a lot and it came at a time when the horror industry was going through a drought. Loved it – Kick ass werewolf carnage!!!Neil u r the best!!!Guys when u c this movie – C it knowing Neil didn’t have a grand budget like Spielberg and Co.
I thought this film was fuckin’ awesome!
Dog Soldiers is tied with The Thing and Halloween as my fav horror movie of all time!! Werewolves and military shoot’em up action…do I need to say more?
amazing film, such a shame that Neil Marshall peaked with this and The Descent,
Best werewolf movie ever made, period. Blood, guts, suspense, good characters, genuine horror–it has it all. Never thought my fav ‘wolf flick “American Werewolf In London” would be outdone, but this is the best–and it is a low-budget flick with low-budget werewolf costumes/effects.
Thank God sci fi shows this movie or i wouldve never seen it. Perfect werewolf movie 11/10!!!!
I love this alot. I watched it and loved it. The idea was good. with soldiers versing Werewolves. It had gore, Tounge in Cheek Humor, Suspense and a girl. The Girl was a good edition to the film. she pretends to help when she’s a werewolf herself. TWISTED!! and the ending was good. The newspaper was Hilarious. This film is much better than The Howling!!! I LOVED IT!!! This should have been an instant classic!!
I’d say this is definitely the best Scifi original movie I’ve seen. It’s a fun campy werewolf movie nothing too special. The traditional effects were good and the film has good replay value. This isn’t as good as the directors other movie “The Descent” imo, but it is a good contender
Sorry to everyone else who liked this movie, but it did nothing for me at all. I found it quite dull and lost interest quickly.
Oddly enough, the latest Neil Marshall film for me was also one of his first films. Still, for being clearly a lower budget movie and from sever years ago I was quite pleasantly surprised.
This movie revolves around a group of British soldiers who are on exercises to try and outmaneuver and out-solider some British Special Forces troops on what is said to be a standard exercise.
When the remains of the Special Forces Unit are found, with one survivor, what commences is a taut, tense running firefight against what quickly becomes apparent are werewolves. These werewolves appear to hunt in a pack and also seem to be rather intelligent, using tactics and group moves to bring down their prey.
The only bad part for me is when they hole up in an abandoned farm house for cover. These types of films always get bogged down by the siege scenes. First there are scenes of exposition and dialogue, followed by fortifying the house, then more dialogue and then right on cue the attacks start occurring.
Still the film provides some decent gore and effects and I must say that the werewolves were fairly well done for not having an ounce of cgi in them. The story also provides a few interesting twists and turns, leading up to most people’s favorite scene, the boxing match with the werewolf.
Overall I was pleased with the movie and think that it stands fairly well today in 2010 and that it bears watching for fans of werewolves and films like Predator.
Loved it. Watched over at a camping trip & we were all Scared $hitless,We even heard some howling, but it was just a dog, I think…
Certainly my favorite werewolf movie. The humor, the kills, the mayhem…loved it all. If you haven’t seen it yet, what the hell are waiting for?! It will not disappoint…
a movie made for entertainment. it’s a good indie and will be remembered as a cult classic
I love, love, love this movie!! Great action and character development so you genuinely care for the soldiers caught in the middle of this ordeal. Funny moments and some great scares! It’s the total package.
‘Dog Soldiers’ is a 2002 British Action/Horror film (set mostly in Scotland), which is Neil Marshall director debut (which he did a brilliant work of directions in his first film & loved the way he was directing the film and he seems to like making outdoor horror/action movie which I supriesly like now, all thanks to him). The movie has a camping theme thrills & chills with a low buget set & a creative way with the elements, theme, style & the set of creepy werewolf (that were amazing well made to look soo really). The storyline/plot was really good (which it was about army men practicing in the wood until they find themself on battle agianest werewolf in scotland) and the acting from some know, but mostly unkown actors was really well acted in this type of film.
The begging of the film was a bloody gut start to the film (which that what I like from horror to scary you from star to finish), the movie builds up drak tension towards the film, while giving great body counts of the gut & blood involed in the movie, fast pacing on to the werewolf & the whole story of the film & the make-up artist & effects on the werewolf were ace & well made.
The film is really creepy, eerie, horrifying, terrifying, shocking moments & jumpy out scary stuff (as you know something going to happen but you jump anyway), also love the way you just see a bit of the werewolf or it’s shadow until mostly the ending, the action is bloody good & has great army moves (for a british movie).
this was so over-rated. to be honest, i only thought it was average. it wasn’t scary at all. the werewolves look utterly CRAP and the ‘twist’ was predictable from the beginning.
overall, it was okay.
awesome army werewolf movie:)
Great Movie! Bloody awesome werewolves. I rate this movie up there with the best werewolf movies ever made. This and howling 1 are the best werewolf movies. But I also liked howling 4 and I liked American werewolf in London as well. The werewolves are just as good as the ones in howling 1 and it’s a shame they don’t have werewolves like this in more movies. Story was great it was different not the same boaring shit all the time like in Underworld. 10/10 for me this was a great movie and I wished they would go ahead and make a second one it would be good.
great gore
great tension
love it
This is pretty f’n intense. Watch it!!!! It’s good!
A favourite of mine. Love it!
This is probably my favorite serious werewolf film, it really delivers on the gore and action.
All hype bad film.
The werewolf were surprising tall in this movie, which do make them really scary, The transformation scene was okay but we never really get to see them transforming which was a bit if a let down.
There was some really nice gory scene in this movie, which I really liked they also have added some humour in this movie but not a lot at all.
For a low budget, straight to video release, this film has all the pieces of a franchise waiting to happen. Very well done.
Entertaining horror/action picture with pitch black humor. shwocases neil marshall’s obvious talent.
As someone else already pointed out, this was a low budget, direct to DVD release. Its really not a good movie but for some reason I cant bring myself to give it a lower score… its just a cool ass movie to watch.
this film should be terrible but its great! it has the horror factor and plenty of humour with it. where else are you gonna see a man and a werewolf have a boxing match?? does the werewolf genre a great justice too.
Super low budget direct-to-dvd film… but I had fun with it when I saw it and I would watch it again. There is much worse out there.
Hobo Approved(TM)
When I was younger (I’m 16 now, and a horror connoisseur may I add!) my dad saw this film and, when I asked to see it, he told me I’d have to wait until I was older. He saw it around 5 years ago, so I was 11-and this made me determined to see it.
When I reached my 13th birthday I went to a friend’s house and I saw that Dog Soldiers was on his movie shelf so, as any teen would, I asked him if we could watch it.
His mum had told him the same thing my dad had told me and, being teenagers, we decided to rebel and put the flick on.
I had never seen a movie like it.
The violence, the gore, the effects-I was blown away. I have, obviously, seen better and more violent horror movies since, but at the time I was scared shitless.
Since then I’ve realised that Dog Soldiers made me fall in love with horror. I’ve seen it since (as a 16 year old) and, while I wasn’t scared by it, I admired it even more for pushing the boundaries of British horror, and taking it into the mainstream.
Considering that most British horror films end up in the bargain bucket for being so fucking awful its laughable, Dog Soldiers made homegrown (for me) horror cool.
And for that, it gets 9/10. YAY!
What do you get when you mix werewolves, British military badasses, with a great script? THIS. This movie is so much fun, I love the bantering and trash talk in this movie. The comedic spots are perfect, the horror is not incredibly scary, but a good horrors doesn’t HAVE to be scary. This is a fine example of a fun, campy horror. SPOON IS THE BIGGEST BADASS OF THEM ALL!
As a warning to those about to watch dog soldiers. The first thirty minutes is the reason it went straight to DVD, the beginning of the film is quite honestly garbage, but as most people will attest a movie that should have been utter rubbish turns out being one you like, even though your brain is still trying to remind you of the horrid first thirty (think of it as UP in reverse). What makes it work comedy plus blood it is a tried and tested method for us horror fans. The acting is piss poor, although without its cult following we would never have gotten the descent so that is a plus, but the movie is one that I love subjecting people to, but in all honesty it is not a masterpiece just a fun little film we should hate but somehow turn out liking.
Boring intro, but after the wait the movie gets seriously ass-kicking.
I thought that this was a good movie.
I am a huge werewolf fan and have been for awhile. I stumbled across this movie looking through a bin at wal-mart and picked it up for $5. With the title being “Dog Soldiers” I wasn’t expecting much, just
another random low budget werewolf flick where you probably wouldn’t even see the beast attacking. I was horribly mistaken. Dog Soldiers quickly became one of my top 5 werewolf films and my go to choice for a late night fix.
Sarge (Sean Pertwee) takes his squad of men to the highlands of Scotland where he was supposed to lead them on a training mission against a special ops group. They quickly realize they are up against
something else when they find the group all torn apart.
Director Neil Marshall quickly sets the mood and the exact nature of the characters but keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the clip. You never actually know whats going to happen until its done. Pvt Cooper (Kevin McKidd) gives you the straight forward take charge attitude that prevents utter chaos between the platoon. He really exploded in the role as you got the feeling he really cared for the rest of the group and would do whatever it took for them to survive. While all the mayhem, shooting and strategy was taking place, Spoon (Darren Morfitt) provided the comic relief. Still being a soldier and doing his duties in a professional manner he was able to throw in remarks throughout the film that would take you from being on the edge of your seat to on the floor laughing. As for Megan (Emma Cleasby), she was the innocent
photographer looking for a way out. Truly believable throughout the movie, exceptional performance.
Now for the good stuff, the werewolves. These werewolves are not your ordinary run of the mill werewolves. They are vicious thinkers. They will take you of your game and when you’re least expecting it, snatch you up. All the werewolves and gore are authentic and look as real as you can get. I am pretty picky on werewolves appearances and after seeing these effects, if I didn’t know any better I would be locking my doors and boarding my windows at night.
The movie perfectly found the medium between fast paced and slow paced. They got the story across while keeping the action high and threw some gore in there because it is a horror film after all. This movie covers all the needs of a horror watcher and is highly recommended.
