This movie will blow you away. It has some traps that not even Saw could compete with. It redefines the way that I look at sci-fi horror movies.
A good sci-fi movie that makes you think.
Great work for Natali.
Classic. A Must-See!
The opening scene reminds me so much of Saw it is hard not to call this Saw’s sci-fi brother. I prefer Saw over this any day, but I prefer this over most movies I’ve seen in my life. My only major complaint was the effects in the end, though I know that couldn’t be avoided with the budget.
I also completely loved the nihilistic “there is no big brother, only man” approach to answering what the cube was all about. Add some of the creepiest music I have ever heard, and you get one amazing movie.
I loved this movie! The premise was unique, the acting was good, and the story wasn’t at all predictable. You will enjoy this movie, and it has replay value if you want to buy used for about the cost of a rental.
Good movie with a few gory scenes. This movie makes you think so good luck with that. By the way who made their clothes with their names and why were they picked. Worth renting and maybe you can figure it out and tell me.
A must see. Has it’s moments of tension and is overall a very interesting movie. The acting is a little bad, but it can be overlooked since it’s such a great film. Good photography. It’s a math nightmare.
Cube is a psychological/sci-fi horror film from 1998 in which a group of people mysteriously wake up inside a massive cube, which is in turn made up of thousands of smaller ‘rooms.’ This movie is an instant classic that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but beware the sequels…
Wow, I like psychological thrillers, movies that mess with the mind. I also like movies with a number sequence pattern. Like this movie entailed both and I really enjoyed it. The acting was a little cheesy but the movie was overall good. I want to see what a remake would be like. Even though remakes often ruin movies I think they could right a better script and have better graphics. This is definatly a movie I would recommend. I give it a 4 1/2 taking away the half for the cheesy acting..
Wow what a cool wierd movie this was, shockingly very very original! this film exceeded my expectations very much as there isnt much you can do inside of a cube, but this film shows that you dont always need a a list cast or a 40 million dollar budget to throw around ,s ometimes the best filmaking comes from low budget, improvising and using alot of brains, i think films are always better with low budgets becuase your forced to be more creative with what little is given.
great but really crapppy acting
this movie should be like remade with better actin and work out some knicks in story that didnt make sense but great movie deserves to be watched
One of the most original sci-fi horrors of the late 90′s.
An amazing sci-fi thriller!
Cube is a film that opens in sheer mystery and keeps you guessing even after the movie is over. The film is extremely claustrophobic and you begin to feel the fear that these characters feel. Each room a new trap and each trap a new difficulty to overcome. The downside to the brilliant concept is the acting is pretty bad at times and most of the characters feel one dimensional. Also, the visuals haven’t aged very well.
If you can look past Cube’s flaws you will find a very interesting and engaging sci-fi horror picture.
It was a lot of years ago, way back when Sam Goody stores still existed in Puerto Rico, and i had heard about this movie called “Cube” through the audio commentary of “Resident Evil (2002)”. When i finally saw the DVD in the horror section, i figured i’d give it a try. Turns out it was the smartest choice.
The movie starts out with a man waking up in one of the many rooms of the Cube. He gets up and walks around some rooms for a bit until one room that has a trap; as we come to find out; literally dices him up into tiny pieces. This was the scene that was discussed in the RE ’02 commentary that was said to be the inspiration for Colin Salmon’s laser scene.
Immediately afterwards, we start to meet the protagonists of the movie. Starting off with Quentin the cop who is at first slated to take on the “big, strong hero” who will save them all by the end, Worth who knows more about the Cube than he’s letting on, Leaven the math student, Holloway the doctor who believes conspiracy theories, Rennes the prison escapee expert, and Kazan the mentally handicapped young man who later turns out to be quite useful than originally thought.
The ways the characters evolve from how they acted at first, such as the “hero” police officer Quentin going psycho, Worth at first very apathetic but through interactions with Holloway and Leaven, starts to become more cheerful, and Holloway’s insistance to bring Kazan along even though most in the group see him as someone who could get them killed if he made a wrong move due to his handicap are all acted out very effectively. And in this movie, math is an instrument which is essential for the group to try to escape the Cube. So i’m sure many math experts love to watch this movie whenever they can to see how much the characters know about the whole math equations and such. Personally, math was never my strongest subject so most of the math being explained in the movie was totally lost on me but if it helped them progress, then it must be REALLY good math.
There are a lot of arguments, particularly among Quentin and Holloway, as well as Quentin and Worth. And just when we think he’s gonna be the hero of the movie, as he keeps arguing with them, he starts getting more desperate as well as psychotic. And so the role of “hero” is shifted more towards Worth by the end of the movie. Speaking of which, Quentin and Worth have a very nice final battle at the end of the movie. I don’t wanna give away which characters escaped the Cube so as to not spoil it for newcomers, but i can tell you that we never see what is outside the Cube, therefore giving the film an ambiguous ending but one that does feel right.
I’d give the flick a perfect 10/10 due to it’s originality at the time and the way it was shot, but the complicated math definately takes it down just a tiny notch for me so all in all, i would give Cube a 9, 9.5 at most. Definately give “Cube” a try, i guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
9/10
Low budget rubbish. Piss poor acting, interesting story, but uninteresting portrayal.
AS-TRO-NOM-ICAL…
Just because something is low budget and has bad acting doesn’t make it terrible. Cube was amazing. IUt was completely original which some films can’t seem to due and the characters felt real. Real people. And most people can’t act that is why only a couple are in Hollwood.
Don’t miss out on this masterpiece.
Really good movie….
This movie is one of the best low budget movies I’ve ever seen
This is the movie all of those “trapped in a room with strangers” horror flicks want to be. Cube was amazing in my opinion.
There are a few holes mathematically but apart from that what a movie !!! Watch it and get cubified….AMAZING – AWESOME – INCREDIBLE!! its a classic.
really creepy.i enjoyed the whole movie
cube was very smart and creepy very different. i like this movie alot watch it
I don’t think the funding was as bad as people say, I thought they were good enough. So far I haven’t given it a real chance, even after I watched it, mainly because I had a friend who thought it was the best horror in the world and disliked he had fallen behind the fab of Saw, that he tried topping the film against Saw with me. Getting frustrated and stuff (Seeing as he can be such a whinner) I automatically disliked cube until I actually watched it but now I think it’s good, but I maybe would feel better about the film if it wasn’t for that incident.
Anyways, might as well bring my actual review about it. When I was watching it I was trying to look more for bad points thanks to the incident I explained earlier. The film was alot of thinking and problem solving and I liked how they were becoming a lot different from what they once were and allegiances had changed with psychological and natural social reasons and one of them starting to kill everyone due to stress and snapping from a personal opinion.
However as pointed out earlier about the bad acting, Quinten had made a large leap, they could’ve made more time and showed more explanations on how he turns on everyone, they also could have atleast let the thief live a little longer seeing as he had already became an interesting character and it was dissapointing to see him go that way. Most the smart stuff only sounded smart, as it has been pointed out by some major mathmatics it got some of it’s sums wrong although that doesn’t really matter. What I find matters is that there’s a huge space of no-killings which I find dissapointing, I like it when someone dies everynow and again, instead it was a few die in the opening and a lot die at the end, I prefer my horror films to keep me lively with killings, they could of alteast had more characters to fall into the traps atleast since only two really fell for a trap and died which I found dissapointing as will.
To come to a conclusion it was more of a problem solving movie to me with psychology mixed with it. Like to me it was like the director had realised he couldn’t come up with something in the cube to kill most the characters to keep it horror-like so he got one of the characters to do it. They seriously should have gotten more of the characters killed off. Then again it still wasn’t that bad a film, so I’ll give it this.
Clever. Unique. Canadian.
Not bad. Just could be better. The sequels are loads worse. Beware.
This is a great movie. People who claim math inconsistencies are stupid and don’t know what they’re talking about. The plot is not meant to be figured out so don’t try. Just watch this great flick.
First off, I’d like to applaud the ingenuity of this film. It made the most of the low budget it had. It has a wonderful
EVENT HORIZON/DARK CITY
vibe. Anyone want to know where the idea for
SAW II and SAW V
came from? It came from Cube. 6 people with different backgrounds, all part of the solution to the problem that is the cube.
The negatives of this movie are big ones, but are also easy to let slide a bit. The acting is on par with a made for TV movie, which is okay… you can sit through it. The actual story moves too quickly and could’ve used another 30 to 45 minutes to enrich intellectual development. The characters lack character. You aren’t really concerned with what is going to happen to them, in truth, you sort of already know what is going to happen to them.
There is something magical in this movie. Despite some major flaws, it still works. You want this movie to work and the lore is what makes it exciting. The execution is sloppy, but you sort of fill in the holes yourself as you go. If this movie was… Americanized (though that usually is for the worse), it might actually be amazing.
Despite the drawbacks, they aren’t fatal and in the end you’ll be glad you absorbed what it was, and be frustrated that it could have been brilliant. This is a GOOD movie. It is well worth having in your collection if you find it for 6 or 7 dollars.
i admire the idea, but not a big fan of it to begin with…
I liked it but its not something I’d watch again to be honest.
this was a pretty interesting movie, nothing ive ever seen before
It was definitely an interesting movie. It had a fresh concept and an intriguing premise. Leaving so much to the audiences imagination was a plus. However that didn’t save it for me, I found certain aspects of this movie to be very annoying and boring. The acting was poor and the plot progression didn’t hold my interest. I didn’t care about the characters.I didn’t care about the mysterious white room at the end of the movie. I honestly just wanted the movie to end.
A great and interesting movie ahead of it’s time. People who like “SAW” and “HELLRAISER” should find this movie very interesting and enjoyable.
Very intresting film. The concept was much different. Saw surely stole many ideas from this film in my opinon.
It’s very rare that you get to see a movie as unique as this. I loved everything about it, including each of the characters.
Really cool concept
The acting was weak overall Cube is a Great low budget movie.
this has been one of my favorite films for some time now, very unique and for me the plot is just riveting. i know, the acting was not fantastic, but i love it just the same. the have the same vibe as the first. if you haven’t watched it, you should. it may not be for everyone, though.
Kick-ass B-movie. Loved it.
kind of boring to be honnest. i couldn’t get pass the shitty acting. I’d say pass on this unless it’s on the dish for free which is why i stuck with it till the end.
Didn’t really like this movie, thought it was okay
This movie had a very low budget, they only built one set but they had a very original and intelligent script. The traps remind you of Saw, but this movie is very different from Saw in it’s message.
I love the central idea behind this film – you have something like 8 people put inside this giant Cube (for reasons never really stated) and their unique abilities must be used to find an escape. It’s played as a psychological thriller. The people eventually turn against eachother because of their clashing personalities.
Yes, the acting isn’t oscar-worthy, but I did enjoy the performances. Particularly David Hewlett and Nicole De Boer I thought were very good.
This is one of my favourite sci/horror movies. Great script. Great ideas. Interesting visuals. Creepy atmosphere. Simply put a great movie.
Cool premise for this little thriller, and the way the puzzle unfolds makes for an entertaining view. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, expect some crappy acting chops—especially one lead actress who could overact a scene of pouring a glass of water. But, it is the concept that kept me in tune, and I enjoyed the watch. Not for everyone, but those interested in a different take on a sci-fi/thriller may want to give this a shot.
gumdrops no red ones
a fantastic film. was the very essence of a mindfuck. it was very intense, creepy, and had an original story. i absolutely loved it. kept me hanging on edge the whole time.
Cube is one of the very few thrillers that is psychologically challenging, rather than a complete gore-fest. It relies on characters and story to bring a film into a full circle, rather than special effects and a style. I found Cube to also be highly entertaining. The film doesn’t lag per say, nor does it go by too quickly. This thriller is very well paced and the direction is terrific.
There is not too much to dislike about the film. Although, I have a few complaints. For one, a character in this film was so obnoxious, that every time he graced his way on-screen, I felt like putting a gun to my head and pulling the trigger. That was the director’s intentions, but a really annoying character can detract from an experience. And while this isn’t a nit-pick, I thought the film could have used more gore. I guess I was mislead by the rating description. And finally, I thought the movie ended too short. Maybe another ten minutes would have made it more sufficient.
Overall, Cube comes highly recommended. It makes you think about things you would have never thought about before, the movie is always unpredictable, and side skirts cliches. Besides an abrupt resolution and an annoying character, Cube is a great film.
One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. Flipping channels, I caught the opening scene on tv, and was hooked from there. I’m always impressed with movies like this, that fly under the radar. A movie that starts off with little information (As to whats happening), and leaves you with just as much at the end. Thinking outside the box on this one (No pun intended).
American Director Vincenzo Natali’s latest film “Splice” opened last month for a short time and is one of the better movies I’ve seen so far this year. Hopefully it will find a following on DVD. His 1997 debut feature “Cube” has become a low budget cult classic. This incredibly inventive and creative film holds you from the very first frame to the closing credits.
“Cube” could be described as a thrilling and suspenseful mathematical mind fu*k. The plot revolves around a group of strangers who are being held captive in a maze of cubed rooms. Why are they there? Who is doing this? These are the two biggest questions asked, and I applaud Natali’s decision to keep these questions ambiguous.
The group of seven characters is composed of a cop, a doctor, a teen girl, an autistic man, an ex-con, a mysterious twenty something guy, and another older man. Although the acting could’ve been better they do the best with what they are given. Made for under a half million dollars, the production values and visual effects don’t suffer. Some of the rooms are booby trapped, and this made me think that this film was likely a big influence on the “Saw” series. Although the Saw movies take the torture and gore to extreme levels, while Cube is more character driven. The rooms all have a certain color and ID numbers with which they must try to figure out what it all means in order to get out alive.
The real genius of the film is that these people are just there for no apparent reason and they don’t know how they got there. Nobody is watching them; they’re no cameras in the rooms. Is this some kind of military experiment? Where exactly is this cube structure located? Who built it? This question is only slightly answered. The cubes eventually start to take its toll on the inhabitants and some start to lose their minds. Themes of claustrophobia, panic and paranoia run throughout the film. Of the seven people trapped inside only one is able makes it “out”.
There was a sequel made in 2002 called “Cube 2: Hypercube” which is not half bad, it is equally mind bending as the original but with gratuitous use of obvious CGI, but in this kind of movie is just seemed to fit.

Average overall.
But the ending sucked.
I disagree with the last review: I actually really liked & really appreciated the ending to this movie. Unlike the Saw movies, you have no idea who the “bad guys” are in this movie. I liked how the heroes of the beginning of the film turned out to be the enemies & vice versa. The loss of a background story to this film actually helps the viewer experience, because who enjoys horror dumbed down? This film exercises your brain & actually makes you THINK…plus there’s some pretty creative deaths in it (especially for a pre-Saw movie)!!!
This sci-fi/horror is one of the most original films to come out in decades. The story is so smart and interesting there is rarely a dull moment. And the cast isn’t bad as well. Definitely worth seeing.
I felt that the B-movie feel this film gives held back what could’ve been a pretty intense thriller. Despite its flaws such as that and the acting from the main characters, Cube is an entertaining B-movie mind game movie with a couple of sweet gore effects and a interesting premise. Worth a look.
Now this is a very twilight-ish feeling film! It was a classic before it knew it and always leaves you feeling satisfied yet nostalgic at the end.
With a simple plot and a simple cast of characters this film takes the rules and breaks them. People you think that will most likely die right off wont… People so profound or so noble might die.
Being a very low budget film the effects are awesome and very creepy. It is this film that the myth of the cubed man that was also used in Resident Evil came from. George Romero was the original director and also wrote the original script that included a scene that was a homage to this film. Even though he was replaced by Paul Anderson and the script was rewritten, the same scene was salvaged and used in Resident Evil with the lasers.
In the end the film is so low budget and so old school that it’s amazing! I really can’t explain how. Just imagine several stranger inside a big cube machine and each has a special quality or dirty habit that they can either use to get out or die from. Also to mention the rooms in the maze move and are trapped… sold yet? It’s a must see for any horror or sci-fi horror fan.
Last note: the Films Score if outstanding and available on Amazon as Mp3 downloads. The Films Soundtrack was never arranged to be released but eventually the films composer Mark Korven allowed the tracks to be released. A great assortment and sound that is very imaginary!
The Cube is in all of us..!
Just like with the Matrix movies, Cube is one of those storys that just got worse trough it’s sequels. All it’s mystery (which was a big part of why this situation was scary) is now gone, and turns a potential classic into an entertaining horror movie, with some of the most stupid sequels ever.
Seriously, this movie is like none other. It’s clever, creative, fun, enjoyable, and a little twisted. Great stuff here!
