One of the worst other then the Jason in the future!!
Jason Takes Manhattan??????? More Like Jason takes Titanic all in all a good Movie
this is one of the worst friday the 13ths ever besides the one that didn’t even have jason in it this is my least favorite even though the guitar smashing against the girls head is my favorite kill i found it boring and cheesy
sucky! That is enough imagine jason in the city. punks and crime and jason killing people. not good. Please stop this madness.
BULLSHIT,THE PEOPLE WHI LIKED THIS MOVIE SHOULD HAVE SHIT ON THEIR MINDS CAUSE THIS IS FREAKIN STUPID.
This was one of the worst of the series… but next to Jason X… that space shit movie made this one look like a Epic
-
How stupid could they be with this especially the title. “HE WAS IN NEW YORK FOR 10 MINUTES!!!!!!” Jason takes Titanic. The title still bothers me. Why would they be crossing through Crystal Lake. For Friday the 13th films I usually don’t like to complain about the acting to much but that girl in the beginning had to be the worst actor ever. She looked like she was ready to laugh when she was trying to scream. The original script had Jason in New York three quarters of the film not one quarter of the film. Kinda funny to see him in New York.
Probably one of the worst movies I’ve seen… and the worst part of it all is, this isn’t the worst in the series.
Wow. No words for this.
The last Friday offering from Paramount is entertaining but lacks.
Jason in NY what more do you want.
first off, i will say this movie is so full of plot holes its insane. but if you can get past that and the fact that almost nothing in the movie is explainable, you may actually get some enjoyment out of it. if anything, its worth watching for the scene where the boxer kid gets his head punched CLEAN off. like i said, while cheesy and unexplainable as all hell, its still a fun movie to watch.
Man, what a shitty movie this was
I liked this one alot. Has alot of cool death scenes and the actings quite good.
This is the first Friday the 13th film that I saw. I was 8 at the time, and I was instantly in love with Jason….but man, what a pretty crappy movie, which is very characteristic of the series. (Let’s be honest.)
At prepubescence, the “anatomy” seen was pretty fun. Not the best kills though. The boxing scene was kind of funny. The sewer death of Jason was quite uninteresting. Paramounts final stab at Jason. No wonder why they sold the franchise after this. Unfortunately, the next film is even worse.
A major let down in the Friday series with this one. I was pumped to see this especially as it was titled ‘Jason Takes Manhattan’ but the majority of the film takes place on a freakin’ boat!!! This starts well with Jason , once again rising from a watery grave at the bottom of Crystal Lake and taking out 2 teens screwing on a boat but then it goes like a roller coaster, up and down up and down. Some bits ok and others not really, especially some of the shit acting.
Again not scary at all but again good kills. Even when he arrives in NY it’s not enough to save a very mediocre film. What came next though was a lot lot worse.
Ok, the Friday the 13th series is probably my favorite movie series ever created. Everyone who knows me knows this all too well. I mean this already my second review of this series and we just started this blog. What’s weird is that my favorite all time movie series also has within it’s numbers one of my most hated movies ever. The movie i’m speaking of is of course none other than the shit-fest of all shit-fests, Friday the 13th Part VIII Jason Takes Manhattan. More like Jason hangs out in Vancouver doing a poor job subbing for Manhattan for the last 20 or so minutes of the film. Whatever. This is the same series that said the 4th one was the final chapter so i’m not going to nit-pick on this. What I will gripe about are the bloodless deaths, terrible acting, inane dialogue, and complete lack of any sort of semblance of plot structure. Jason kills teenagers on a cruise ship headed for Manhattan. Jason chases the survivors in Manhattan. Jason is vanquished. Easy and painless. I’ve dealt with worse plots and in the same series *ahem Part V ahem* and still enjoyed the hell out of the film. Part VIII though does a perfect job destroying my will. The acting is deplorable even for this series, they must have literally grabbed high school drop outs off of the street cleaned them up put them in front of the camera and gave them cue cards to read. That can be the only way I could wrap my head around these acting performances. I’m watching this movie right now and here is an example of one stellar scripted exchange: There are weapons laid out on the floor and everyone grabs one except Julius who stares intently. One guy asks, “what’s up Julius you’re not taking a weapon?” Julius replies, “No” he then pauses dramatically for about 10 seconds………and exclaims, “except this gun!!”. Wow. I am dumb-founded. This director must have been doing something in between takes to allow crap like this to make it into the final print. Either that or he just didn’t care because he knew no matter what Part VIII of any series is going to be stretching it. He was right to nap on this one except for one problem: he wrote the script! So this idiot has no one to blame but himself. He wrote himself into this mess. I also want to punch whatever executive at Paramount thought it was a good idea to ditch the classic Friday score and sub in generic rock instrumentals and truly bad 80′s title music. It’s laughable. Even the way Jason is resurrected is hokey and laugh out lout bad. At least the movie lets you know in the first minute or two how crappy it is going to be. The MPAA really hit this one hard as well and that certainly didn’t help my views on this one. The movie is filled with cutaways and aftermath shots and no real gore to speak of. I think this has the distinction of being the most bloodless Friday film. That’s just the icing on the cake to me. Part VII: The New Blood sucked really bad too but at least it had decent kills and Kane Hodder running amok. Kane even looks tired in this one like he knew what kind of crap he was participating in. At least this movie put an end to Paramount’s mis-treating of this franchise and allowed to go to New Line for a creative revival with Jason Goes to Hell.
There are a couple of positives though because it is a Friday movie it can’t be all bad. There is one cool set piece kill where Jason stalks one of the teens in the disco-techque on board the ship. That scene is also famous for introducing us to magical teleporting Jason! Yes, i forgot to mention Jason teleports in this one. I kid you not. Why he does this I will never know but he does it throughout the film and everytime he does it makes me sigh in disbelief. See I tried to get positive and I just don’t think it’s possible here. Ok, I thought the main girl was really cute when she wasn’t making me cringe with her crapt-tastic acting. On a nostaligc note, this was the first Friday film I ever saw so I think that’s only reason I can ever watch this thing. If you’re a Friday newbie I suggest you save this one for last, you’ll be happy you did. For completists only.
Yikes. That should’ve been the film company’s reaction after realzing what a poor movie that had created. I love this series, I have loved it ever since I saw my first Friday film, and I think Jason Voorhees helped shape the gore-tastic horror that we have today. Having said that, even the star power of Jason can’t save this film. Jason barely steps foot in “New York” *cough* Vancouver *cough* when New York was supposed to be the focal point of the plot! If you don’t like this series, you’ll be giving this one a 0/10, because I love this series, I’ll give it a charitable 2/10.
Sucked. Best scene when he boxes the black dude on top of the roof and punches his head off in one try and his head rolls in the dumpster. Hillarious.
Zombie Jason is just unstoppable at this point. And is so far removed from the Chubby redneck of the early 80′s, that this movie very well could have had a completley different zombie killer villian and would still have sucked equally. Really terrible, Kane Hodder is a fuckin sweet Jason anyway.
Dear God, I actually tried watching this last night (failing miserably, I fell asleep somewhere after the survivors made it to New York), and it was even worse than I remember. Time was kind to the first 6 movies, but not so much to 7 or 8. 8… was lame when I first watched it back upon its original release… and sadly, even moreso now. Lame makeup, the bad music and 80′s hair, and what the FUCK was up with Jason’s strange new teleportational ability? There were so many scenes where Jason was obviously behind someone just to pop up again in front of them, it was ridiculous. Cutaways from damn near every kill and almost NO NUDITY. This is Friday the 13th? Kane Hodder and Jensen Daggett (who really has somehow become The Attack of the SuperMILF) are the only reasons to watch this movie, and maybe Kelly Hu if you’re a fan and wanna see how far she’s come. This movie is the genesis of PG-13 horror, my friends. If the version that Michael Bay and Marcus Nispel have in store for us is shitty? It’ll still be waaaay better than this dried poodle turd.
WHAT THE HELL DOES EVERYONE HAVE AGAINST THIS MOVIE!? Its probably one of the best of the series. Its a huge step up from Part 7. This movie had great kills! To me Jason always has cool make-up in each of the movies!I can say that Part 8 was way more enjoyable than Parts 1,7,9 and Jason X!
This was the beginning of the end of friday the 13th…this movie was horrible and just stupid….i hate this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!
I liked Jason Takes Manhattan. I like all the Jason movies, no series is better.
It should have been called: Friday The 13th: Jason Takes A Boat Ride For The First Hour Of The Movie
THIS WAS ACTUALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITES OF THE SERIES…
DIDNT CARE FOR THE ENDING AT ALL..
It’s cool how Jason climbs on a huge ship full of graduate students heading to New York and has a massacre on the ship. At least it’s different from the teens staying at an abandoned house and having sex, then Jason shows up. The main star named Rennie, her boyfriend, some teachers, and a black boxer survive the boat trip from hell, but now they must survive New York…and Jason. It turns out that Rennie had been to Camp Crystal Lake and and was almost killed by Jason when she was a child. I always thought it was funny when Jason breaks the boombox and gets the punks angry and Jason shows them his real face and they all run away…that’s hilarious! If you love Jason and New York, you’ll love FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN!!!
This film is crap, I honestly like Jason goes to hell better than this film… lol, this one was a joke. I think that the 5th friday the 13th(???) where is was the paramedic killing people was worse than this one… 1 star*
This movie is a pile of garbage. Not one scene is remotely enjoyable. Some cool death scenes don’t even come close to saving it. Yes, the boxing decapitation is cool… but you have to sit and watch the guy punch Jason for 5 minutes before it happens. Boring! The whole teleporting thing I think is really what makes this movie shit. There could have been good chase scenes if they didn’t just cheap out and have Jason appear out of no where in like every scene. Really, the Manhatten thign being like the last 20 minutes of the movie doesn’t bug me at all. Them being stranded on a boat with Jason is an awsome idea. They just completely blew it. Who the hell wrote this is what I want to know? The sewer at the end… like ugh this movie is insulting. It actually hurts the brain.
You guys are crazy. This is Jason. He don’t care where he is if he sees you your fuckin dead unless your a hot piece of ass then you might stand a chance. I have been a Jason fan since part 4. First 3 are great but I was too young to watch them when they came out. Also I always said if Jason and Freddy fought each other Jason would kick his ass and he did
This movie are good, but not best in the series
This one, part 5, and part 7 are my favs.
Ok, ive got to say something, this movie sucks. most of us can agree on this. but the thing that bothered me was that the boat started in Crystal LAKE. Yet somehow they ended up in the ocean. Shouldnt it technically be called Crystal BAY. A lake doesnt lead to the ocean a bay does. ANd second i just thought this movie was pure shit. Nothing interesting. The Movie took place mostly on a boat not in manhatten. Besides that. it shouldnt be hard to make a killer on a boat scary. Small Cabins. he could be anywhere. but they decide to make it not scary. just typical jason crap. this is almost as bad as a new beggining that didnt even have jason in it. Its all crap. lets be adults about this and just agree on the sake of film making that friday the 13th stopped being good after the first one. which i actually liked
Its not that bad! One scene that I will always remember kinda like my first porn scene I ever saw was the part where Jason was walking in the city and the street punks were listening to thier boom box and Jason walks buy and kicks the living crap out of the boom box. It took to long for them to get in the city and the title was Jason takes manhattan, They should have titled it Friday the 13th “Camp to Cruise”
i loved this movie so much! it great in the series and changes it up a bit
jason rules!
the punching off of the dudes head alone is worth ten stars but honestly …. six
Fucking pussies! This movie KICKS ASS! WHAT OTHER MOVIE HAVE YOU SEEN THAT HAD A PISSED OFF DUDE WITH A MASK KILL A BUNCH OF FUCK BAGS ON A BOAT THEN GO TO NEW YORK AND KILL MORE FUCK BAGS AND HANG OUT! PUSSIES!
any jason movie that kane hodder is in is worthy of at least 4 skulls in my book. Would of loved to of seen jason just start slaughtering innocent civilians on the streets of manhattan but we always dont get what we want. More gore would of been nice too.
This movie is all about the kills. Other than that everything else sucks. I fell asleep watching this. Props to the hot rock kill.
This is one of my favorites, it’s hilarious to me.
it was super stupid, why the fuck would he like go to manhattan, then he melted ..how would he return? the only thing good was kane hodder played jason and it was done from there. i had to go see it cause im one of friday the 13th’s dedicated fan!
I like bad horror movies. but this was just frickin terrible. I’m a fan of all the Jason movies… except this one. There was next to no gore and I hated the way jason was wet the entire time. it drove me nuts. the acting was worse than any other of the friday the 13th movies and the ending was crap. I didn’t mind the fact that he was in manhattan… that could’ve been cool. He’s been at crystal lake forever, why not go kill a bunch of high, drunk, naked teenagers somewhere else? Not a bad idea… if it were only gorier and had a better ending…
I couldn’t watch this movie!!! it was REALLY REALLY boring! and unmasked Jason looked like something outta SCOOBY DOO!!!
Good movie.
This movie was boring, really. Too much stupidity going on thru out the film. I was born in Manhattan, Jason could have done so much better.
awesome movie
i really have a special place in my heart for this movie. ive been getting reaquainted with the friday movies and hadnt saw thi sfor at least ten years. when i was younger it was awesome but know its just cheezy still love it tho its a proper 80′s flick love it!!!!!1
I like this one a little more than most of the other sequels. A bit tongue-in-cheek and the cruise ship and New York settings were a nice change of pace in my opinion. The camerawork and overall direction are more creative than usual also. Nothing special, but it’s not bad either.
I think this is the lamest chapter of the saga…
Ok this a SPOILER!!!!
Why the hell does Jason turn in to a child in the end. WHAT THE FUCK WAS WITH THAT SHIT! He was not even deformed in the flashback where he drownes. DID THEY THINK HE BACAME DEFORMED FROM LYING IN THE WATER! He’s FACE has never looked this bad in any unmasking scene. I never liked the zombie jason with an undead face concept. i was in to the original deformed human face. BUT THIS IS JUST SHIT! WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH THAT FACE! JUST LOOK AT IT! IT LOOKS LIKE SOME FUCKING CARTOON FACE! The only friday movie that is worse than this one is JASON FUCKING SHITHOLE X. And another thing i have to say is WHY THE FUCK IS HE NOT KILLING ANY ONE BUT WHEN HE IS IN THE CITY! INSTEAD HE IS CHASING AFTER THE TWO MAIN CHARACTERS! THE FUCKING JASON CONCEPT WAS A DEFORMED MAMA’S BOY IN THE WOODS KILLING ALL WHO CAME TO HIS REALM! NOT A FUCKING CARTOON LOOKING CHARACTER ON A BOAT TO MANHATTAN! Pure crap.
Not a very good film. I give props to Mr.Hodder, & Jensen Daggett was (&still is) hotter than the planet Mustafar. Jason kicking the radio was funny, but it never really felt like a true Friday flick to me. The ending was beyond retarded!!! This film emits a foul & unpleasant odor indeed !!!!
one of the worst but at least its not space………………
This movie is sooooo crappy. It hurts the eyeballs. All the lame stories with all the lame highschool kids? Bleh. The rocker girl who plays air guitar all by herself in the bowels of the ship, the rich snobby girl who’d sleep with her teacher for a better grade, the nerdy guy with the camera who just wants to bang the rich snobby chick so he does whatever she says, the (of course) angry black guy who loves to box.
Man, I can’t even think of something cool that happens in this movie. How he gets his mask back is stupid. They’re only actually in Manhattan for the last fifteen minutes. Jesus Christ’s diarrhea, I hate this movie.
I guess the random toxic waste that flows through the sewer for some reason and kills Jason was kind of bad ass. OH wait, no that was retarded too. My bad.
Positives…
1) Another Friday the 13th.
2) Kane Hodder is back
3) Cool movie poster
4) Jason in NY isn’t necessarily a bad idea
5) One awesome scene were Jason meets up with a gang of thugs
Negatives…
1) Story
2) How Jason got to NY
3) story
4) I didn’t care about any of the characters
5) and….the story really isn’t great, even for a Friday the 13th.
I don’t hate this movie like I “Jason goes to Hell” or “Jason X.” But this was maybe the worst of the Paramount Friday’s. (This one or part 5. Like this movie, I liked the idea, but hated how they brought the movie to life.)
See this if you’re a Friday fan… but don’t judge the series on this lone movie!
Rock on!
the truth is i honestly didnt hate the movie, for a friday movie it ticks all the boxes thought it was a good effort and 500 times better then Jason Goes to Hell.
I agree that this movie was stupid but I still enjoyed it. This series jumped the shark after the 4th one so if you know that going in, it’s a fun time killer.
Beyond a shadow of a doubt the weakest of all the Friday The 13th movies. That includes both the Paramount and the New Line films. The idea had so much potential, but everything just seemed to fall flat. Outside of one funny kill, even the kills are boring in this entry. The best thing I can say about this film is the song at the beginning of the film (The Darkest Side Of The Night by Metropolis) is pretty cool, but other than that, this film is the worst Jason outing on record.
Not the best in the Friday The 13th Series, but still worthy of the collection in my opinion. Kane Hodder is the man.
If it wasn’t for Jason goes to hell, it would be the worst in the series. I knew going in it was going to be cheesy and wouldn’t live up to the likes of the previous installments, but after all the hype surrounding the film, I expected it to be at least decent, but it couldn’t even be that. The opening thirty minutes or so were fun, but that was it. Nothing was good about the film.
The kills weren’t terrible and I actually think the boxing kill was cool, it was lacking. But even in that scene the guy is punching Jason forever. Also, Jason is only in Manhattan for the last fifteen minutes or so. The title is very misleading. The whole time he’s just roaming around in a boat. Also, the ending was stupid and uncalled for. I won’t spoil it, but the ending is the worst part.
On top of that, the film would have made a decent eighty minute movie, but they stretch it so much, that the running time is about a quarter to two hours, which is ridiculous. Jason in this one is silly and cheesy. The main characters were also stupid and none of them seemed enthralled. They all looked bored on set and I can’t blame them.
Jason takes Manhattan is pointless and stupid. It’s way too cheesy to be a Jason flick. It’s too stupid to be a B-flick. And it’s way too boring to make for an even mediocre film. It messes up in everything it could be. Don’t waste your time or money on this crap.
I don’t have much to say about this one except what the hell were they thinking when they made this sorry excuse for a Friday the 13th sequel.
It’s easy to see why Paramount let the franchise go after this flick, which seems to just sink along with the boat in the movie. The lowest point Jason’s ever reached & that’s saying something for a character who gets to space!
bad movie, one of the worst in the series
My least favorite in the series. It is missing the gore, and takes most of its time on the ship and only a small portion of the movie actually in Manhattan. The final death scene was ok though, but overall only had a couple good deaths.
This movie lacked the ability to create new ideas. Not to degrade the directors but the movie should have been titled Jason Takes A Boat To Manhattan do to the fact about 80 mins on boat and 15 mins in the alley & sewer ways of New York
I really like this movie. Even though it’s really cheap and really fake, It’s one of my favorites. This movie makes me like old-fashioned movies.
y did they do this one?
Some goofy, cheesy fun. Nice to see a different setting BUT it would be better if it actually spent most of the movie in Manhattan. Shoulda been titled “Jason takes a boat to Manhattan”
I am really bad at writing reviews, but have to say that this film was terrible. If anyone can say anything good about this film I believe they are lying. Why do companies pay to put this crap out. Sure you can make a fast buck, but is it worth it?
This movie… was OK, but it could have been better, the lack of gore, makes the movie really boring! I mean I was expecting something really awesome with a length of 100 minutes! That’s the longest out of the series.
A fairly ridiculous plot and cheesy 80s feel.. but despite that it’s not that bad and is fun in parts.
Over all this movie was not good. Total drop of the ball. Why would Jason stay on the boat in crystal lake when the camps lights were on so there had to be people there. The acting was just horrible and the set ups and kills were just boring. I cant say no more.
This entry in the series had so much potential, but as usual that potential was cut way short. I think besides the new blood, this is one of the worst entries on the series. Jason just wasn’t as brutal as he usually is, he seemed like he was taking it easy on those kids. But if your a hardcore Jason fan than I guess you will enjoy it.
Such a let down a truly horrible film.
I have always had a strange admiration for this movie, it is so different from the typical Jason flick. I love how the Friday the 13th franchise really got swept up into the whole 80′s NYC scene, with the bums, drugs, and fads. This is so much fun to watch!
I can understand why so many people are let down by this movie. I mean, it’s called Jason Takes Manhattan, and most of the movie takes place on a boat, I get it. But, if you can forget about the title, and watch the movie for what it is, you’ll find that this cast of cookey characters are worth it. McCulloch alone proves to be a gem of a character, what with his tacky suits and erratic behavior. He is a legend in his own time.
Also, let’s not forget about Jason knocking a boxer’s head off to go sailing across the NYC night sky, just brilliant!
I recommend this movie to any Jason fan, you’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, and if you toss some friends and beer into the mix, you’ll have a fun filled evening!
Sometimes horror movies need to be ridiculous, it’s what makes them good.
Until next time, enjoy the show!
i am very dissaointed that this movie wasn’t taken more seriously, and not on a boat the whole time. the only cool thing was kane hodder playing jason. and the ending blew chunks.
Beating a dead horse with a machete.
this movie was horrible!!!! how does he get to the city when he thrown off the boat???? i mean i know he is always in water and shit but what is he aquaman i mean jesus where do these people come up with this shit!!!!??? the best part in the movie is kane hodder and when he kicks over the punks radio.
Is Jason going to take Boardwalk too, or Park Place?
I am a big time Friday fan but this movie was SUCKTASTIC.
So much promise for the series with this premise but the ball gets dropped! My least favorite Friday film.Had some good kills and Jason was great. But after an extremely long boat ride, little time actually spent in Manhattan,And a total what the f*#K ending! It’s a failure but still is mildly entertaining.Must be seen at least once just because of Jason but have alcohol on hand to dumb yourself down for a disaster.
Just as good as The New Blood!
Crap.
Jason Takes Manhattan is my least faorite in the Friday The 13th franchise along with Jason X, Part 4 The Final Chapter and Part 5 a new beginning. This movie has good plot it’s kinda cool that the filmmakers had the idea of sending Jason from Crystal Lake to New York that was really nice so far. But this movie falls flat after the first half. The movie is lacking of gore and scares so far. Acting is mediacore towards the entire film. Although Kane Hodder was still good with his performance as Jason Voorhes who is now the true Jason Voorhes. While the rest were ok so far. The only thing I dislike about this movie is that the Jason make up looks really bad and Jason’s face looks more like molded clay than a horrifying deformed face. This movie is one of my least favorites although it was better than part 4, 5 and Jason X. It was too bad director Rob Hedden had trouble with the entire movie because of problems and stuff. Anyways this movie is an average Jason Voorhes horror flick.
Shitty, shit shit shitty. I think one guy got his head punched off of his head though, which is kind of funny. Everything else though? BAD. REALLY BAD. More information here:
http://thewolfmancometh.com/2011/02/16/friday-the-13th-part-viii-jason-takes-manhattan-1989/
This movie is garbage. It starts off relatively well, with a boat sitting on Crystal Lake in the middle of the night, good atmosphere there, and two kids on board talking about Jason’s legend… Jason climbs aboard and kills them off. Cut to the next day with a bunch of high school graduates on a trip to New York on some cruise ship. This movie takes place mostly on the ship and what seems like 10 minutes in New York. They should have called it “Jason Takes A Cruise” this movie is bad. The kills are boring, the acting (even for a Friday the 13th movie) is atrocious. This movie, along with Jason X, Jason Goes To Hell and A New Beginning are the worst of the Friday the 13th movies and should be avoided at all costs.
Great idea to take Jason to the city, but this movie falls flat on its face. It’s total shit. Along with Jason Goes to Hell, the absolute worst of the series. Fuck this shit.
My least favorite in the series. The highlight of the movie is Jason punching someones head off.
So perhaps the title is misleading. What can I say? I’m a huge fan of the Friday the 13th series and this is just another entry into it. For me it was a little refreshing to once again see Jason in a different setting. What more can I say? There’s death, there’s Jason, there’s a boat, they end up in New York. So it won’t win a Grammy. Its still Jason, and I like it.
Finally taking Jason out of Crystal Lake but not to Manhattan. This is somewhat hated more than Part 5 and quite rightly so because the fans had been cheated more in this one, Budget issues caused the Manhattan plan to be cut to about 5 minutes and most of the movie takes place on a boat and in Vancouver. Putting that aside the movie is still pretty bad. This is also the worst looking Jason in the series although unmasked was quite cool. Kane Hodder did little to no stunt work in this entry which was quite disappointing. This caused Paramount the smart decision to sell the rights as the series clearly couldn’t go on anymore, this would have been a good place to end the franchise but oh no……
