Iv’e seen this but can’t remember a thing about it. So I guess it bored me hehe….Most probably because i’m sick of these cliche movies. I don’t think there was anything substantial or grounding to this movie.

This movie is awesome. It is really good and what a great idea. This movie has some ideas that most don’t take to the place that this one does. This movie pulls you in very well. It has been years since this movie, and mean like 8 years and me and my friends still talk about how great it was. This thing is a great killer/psycho movie.

Don’t pay any attention to anything anyone else says about this film, as I can best say it reminds me of any Eddie Gein story mixed with the filthy entrails of Henry:Portrait of a Serial Killer with a supernatural twist.
The Ugly starts off with the story of Simon, his overbearing, abusive mother, and the deep seeded neuroses her “upbringing” left him.
While watching this, you may be reminded in a format sense, of Silence of the Lambs, but it is definitely worth watching to the end.
See it and remember it, for this is one of horror film’s great unappreciated gems.

I agree with Blackdeath that this is an overseen gem of a movie. It’s more of a psychological thriller than a typical horror to me, as you are torn between feeling really sorry for the serial killer character (especially in childhood flashbacks) and wanting to make his pain go away, to thinking, you Ba****d-with all you have been through how could you do that? In fact, as many of his victims are disabled in some way or another, does he see himself as an angle of death or is he just a pervert?

Watch it and see for yourself….

“I enjoy killing.. isn’t that enough?”

An indie horror film from New Zealand, one that really sends chills down your spine.. The characters are well written, and you do feel for the lead, even though he is a serial killer.. Forget the Ring and all the other japanese knock-offs, bring on more horror films like this.

A vastly underated and misunderstood little masterpiece. Scott Reynolds is a genius who needs to get off his ass and make more movies. Everything about The Ugly works, from the off kilter stylisation to the odd, low key performances. It oozes menace and existential dread throughout. If you haven’t seen it you need to track it down now.

I picked this movie up only because it was only like $2.00, knew nothing about it and it was an amazing find. This movie was really good. The story worked and the killer was a very disterbed man who did what he did very well. This movie is one you all need to see.

“The Ugly”, an extremely underrated and overseen, almost giallo-esque horror-drama about the weird and inscrutable serial-killer Simon who seems to be tormented by a second personality (called ‘The Ugly’) which is probably responsible for all the violent kills.

It’s undoubtedly one of the best-looking horror movies I’ve ever seen (I’m looking at you, Argento): stunning cinematography, super-stylish and highly atmospheric settings, wonderful colours, incredible lighting and the absolutely adorable use of black blood which looks far creepier than your average red blood :)

The acting is mostly terrific and the characters are all highly fascinating (Paolo Rotondo as Simon, Rebecca Hobbs as cool psychologist, Roy Ward as the super-odd Dr. Marlowe, Paul Glover and Christopher Graham as hilarious security guards).
Scott Reynolds’ direction is powerful and his script is pretty clever. The movie is consistently tense and gripping, incl. a few jump scares and some extraordinarily suspenseful scenes (the bathroom sequence, the showdown), the kills are all gory and brutal and the well-fitting soundtrack is just beautiful.

IMO “The Ugly” is definitely one of the greatest horror films of the 90s. Highly recommended!

The 90′s didn’t completely suck. The Ugly is probably one of the best of the decade. The film is easily one of the most artsy and best- looking horror films I have seen. Despite the format there is some very suspenseful scenes, and great atmospheric tension- building sequences. the black blood adds to the gritty tone, and also to the directors colorful vision, when we are finally shown actual red blood at the end of the film it is almost very beautiful. In the end, The Ugly is more than just a movie, it is a vision, and it sits among the best.

Official Score: 4 / 5
