“Ah, childhood memories… I hadn’t watched “Critters” or any of its sequels since I was a young boy and I nearly forgot how incredibly entertaining they are! Along with “Night of the Creeps” and “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”, “Critters” definitely is the most successful horror-comedy of the 80′s and it actually even manages to be much better than the blockbuster it obviously borrowed its ideas from, namely Joe Dante’s “Gremlins”. The screenplay also uses story elements of innumerable other movies (the farm-setting, the space prison concept…) and yet it never really directly rips off any of them, which is quite an admirable effort. Hairy little space monsters, with funky red eyes and an insatiable appetite, escape from their prison transport and land in rural Kansas where they immediately attack farmer Jay Brown’s cattle and family. The son of the family tries to reach the nearby village for help, but the Critters (or “Krites”, as they’re called in space) make it impossible to get away. Luckily enough, there also are two intergalactic bounty hunters with heavy artillery looking for the murderous furballs. The story opens a little slow with an overly extended family portrait of the Browns but, once the critters are rolling over the earth and eating their way through the countryside, Stephen Herek’s film is both funny and action-packed at the same time. The dialogs are surprisingly witty and contain numerous references towards great Sci-Fi classics. Particularly the bounty hunters are hilarious, with one of them impersonating a famous rock star and the other indecisive about what appearance he wants to take on. The sharp-teethed Critters are engaging creations, made by the endlessly talented Chiodo-brothers of the aforementioned “Killer Klowns…” The acting performances are rather forgettable. M. Emmet Walsh is underused as the town’s sheriff and Dee Wallace Stone tries to look too much like a teenage scream queen. There are early roles for Billy Zane and Lin Shaye, who would only reach their popularity-peak in the 90′s. Light-headed fun for the whole family!” –Coventry, imdb.com
fun fun stuff just as good as the original gremlins movie, i loved it for it’s strange storyline about bounty hunters and alien critters, it knows it’s a silly horror movie and makes sure it doesnt take itself too serious and has a lot of fun
hairy lil chubby aliens
This was soooooo funny , laughed soooo hard . I watch this one every once in a while just to get a great laugh!!!!!
The scene in which the critter gets rocked with a shotgun alone warrants 5 skulls.
“Two Thumbs Up” -Siskel & Ebert
Good movie.
Fun!
critters is one of those childhood classics for me,its alot of fun!
Great fun stuff. The Chiodo brothers rock. I wish you guys had the other Critters movies on here! The second’s the best!
Think Gremlins that can bite your face off and turn into a tumble weed and that’s pretty much what you get. Plus you get Billy Zane getting his neck chewed out. Awesome.
AHH HAHAHAHAHAHA, this movie was soooooooo cheesy and AWESOME at the same time. This is a lot of fun, but not as good as the 2nd. If you like creatures movies similar to Gremlins you will like this. Check it out, NOW!!!!! but of course there are the down sides, but who gives a flying f***……7/10!
This is why I love to come to this site, because sometimes they will be posting reviews for movies that I saw years ago and still love. Say what you want, but I love this film. In fact, when it first hit video years ago (before DVD) my siblings and I would probably rent this movie at least once a week and did that for several months, and never got tired of watching it. One night a month ago my sister and I got my thirteen year old daughter to watch it with us and she loved it. It’s campy and silly, but in a good way. Watch it you won’t be disappointed.
Fun as all hell alien/monster movie, with awesome creatures. One of a kind & loads of fun!
This movie was R LOL I always thought it was PG-13… LOL
well anyways amazing monster alien movie the critters own… They were scary vicious as fuck. They will shoot needles at you then murder you. OWNAGE. I wished they existed. Cool movie.
Fun,fun, fun, that’s what this movie is.An 80′s classic for sure.
Was a ton of fun to watch. I it just recently for the first time in about five years. I brings back alot of memories of all the shit I watched as a kid.
made my childhood great
One of my faves as a child. This is a fun flick from start to finish. If you love aliens with razor sharp teeth who turn into deadly furballs then this is the film for you. Everybody knows the plot, aliens crash land on Earth, with shapeshifting bounty hunters in pursuit and take up residence in the backyard of a country family. There is just enough blood to satisfy and it contains some great laughs, including the now infamous porch scene. Another classic horror/comedy from the 80′s. Do a double feature with this and it’s better sequel.
Cheesy, awesome, 80′s fun.
Also a favorite from my childhood. I still love this movie with a passion and think that it should either be remade or have another installment included with it.
Critters is amazing!
Critters is one of the most fun films ever made with laughs, gore and some pretty awesome creatures.
Critters is so much fun. The Critters were awesome looking and it had me laughing throughout the whole movie. All In All, Critters is alot of fun and i recommend it.
I loved this film as a child and only just recently revisited it, I can safely say I still love it. A total riot of a horror movie that’s a ton of fun.
I remember first seeing this when I was about four and it scared the crap out of me. When I look back on it now I can’t believe my parents let me watch it over and over at such a young age with no worries. Now revisiting at the age of twenty-five it still holds up and gives me chills just like the first time I saw it. Great fun!
amazingly awesome, good gore and awesome comedy the sequels are alright bt this one is the greatest
This dose take while to show creature so we get to know the family and the build a lot of tension until the creatures finally show up and its not a let down when they show up.
I really enjoyed watching this movie, this movie as some really tense moments and there some really bloody moment as well when the Critters attack.
The Critters were not that bad, they did not look too scary but there a much more scarier then the Gremlins and a lot more vicious then the Gremlins and the Critters can also be really funny at times.
The acting from the whole cast was really good for b-movie,
This is one of those crazy awesome 80′s movies that is so much fun. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
A great sci fi/horror gem from the 80′s that has “classic” laser blasted all over it!
Movies in the 80s sure knew how to show you a good time!
gotta love critters!!
Scary, fun and Billy Zane. Go to it.
the red eyes scarred me when I was a kid. It’s been 15+ years since I’ve seen this movie for the first time, I still have nightmares of seeing red eyes through my kitchen window.
