7 Sexed Up Horror Kills!!!

We all know that sex and violence have been bedfellows in entertainment since the dawn of time. They’ve certainly walked hand in hand since the dawn of cinema, so much so that this list could never hope to be completed in just one outing. In fact, you could probably have an entry on this list for every legit slasher ever made (I even had to make a rule about including only one Friday The 13th film). READ MORE

Interview: Cast of ‘Red White & Blue’!

Now out on DVD and Netflix Instant, writer/director Simon Rumley’s Red White & Blue (which I recommend to more open-minded viewers) tells the tragic story of three disparate Austin, Texas residents whose paths eventually collide in a shocking explosion of savage violence. I recently chatted with stars Amanda Fuller and Marc Senter – playing a soul-broken nymphomaniac and an aspiring rock star, respectively – whose one night of passion early in the film sets off a horrific chain reaction of murder and mayhem. The two gave insight into the making of the film, executive-produced by Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League, as well as working with co-star Noah Taylor (The Proposition), who plays a mysterious blue-collar worker concealing a dark inner nature. See inside for the full interview. (more…) READ MORE

Special Feature: ‘Scream 4,’ Slicing Into New Rules & Conventions

In the decade-plus period of time that has passed since the release of Scream 3, there’s no doubt that the horror landscape has changed significantly. In the intervening years we’ve witnessed the rise of the torture porn craze, seen a resurgence in “found footage”/shaky-cam horror, and watched helplessly as a seemingly unyielding series of remakes cluttered up our local multiplexes. SXSW ’11: Ti West’s ‘Innkeepers’ Accepted

Just yesterday French director Xavier Gens leaked info that The Divide will be playing in this March’s SXSW Film Festival. Joining the rounds is Ti West’s latest genre effort, The Innkeepers, which comes courtesy of Dark Sky Films. After over one hundred years of service, The Yankee Pedlar Inn is shutting its doors for good. The last remaining employees –Claire (Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy)—are determined to uncover proof of what many believe to be one of New England’s most haunted hotels. As the Inn’s final days draw near, odd guests check in as the pair of minimum wage “ghost hunters” begin to experience strange and alarming events that may ultimately cause them to be mere footnotes in the hotel’s long unexplained history. West directed The Roost, Cabin Fever 2 and The House of the Devil. (more…) READ MORE

Best & Worst ’10: HORROR GUY KEENAN’S BOTTOM 5 OF 2010

It is SO much easier to write bad things for films than good things, that’s for damn sure. These films below have stuck out in my head all year as the horror films I wish I had an rusty, jagged, needled filled scrub brush covered in acid to wash the horrid viewings away with. Check ‘em out! (more…) READ MORE

Best & Worst of ’10: DAVID HARLEY’S BOTTOM 5 OF 2010

Writing this year’s worst-of list was a lot easier than its counterpart; as pure luck would have it, I was only brought to a boiling rage by eight horror films this year! My lowest recommendations of 2010 fail for a variety of reasons, ranging from a clear lack of vision and funds (my biggest pet peeve) to worst use of music ever to shameless capitalization of a name brand. One entry is so bat shit ridiculous and unintelligible that it gave me one of the biggest laughs I had this year, which makes me wonder whether or not we’ll all see it as a big joke in another five or ten years (wait, my future self just informed me that’ll never happen, but it was fun to think about for all of two seconds). Best & Worst ’10: MICAH’S TOP 10 OF 2010

Since I watch an ungodly amount of horror (around 275 films viewed and reviewed so far in 2010), the bulk of which is DVD/Blu-rays, I opted to put together a list of the best films that had disc releases this year. What that means is you won’t see any films on this list that had a wide release (The Crazies, NOES) or didn’t have a disc release at all (Hatchet II), but you will see several films that had releases in other countries, appeared in festivals or limited engagements AND had a 2010 U.S. disc release. Halloween Treat #3: Eli Roth’s ‘Clown’!

A pretty amazing trailer has been spreading like wildfire across the Web. Inside you’ll find the teaser for Clown, a fun little Halloween treat from horror icon Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever). The footage was put together by Waverly Flams, a group of several filmmakers from Brooklyn. Fun stuff! It features a dad who puts on a clown costume for his kid’s birthday, only to have it transform into an evil clown creature. “That’s not funny daddy…” Hilarious! (more…) READ MORE

Halloween Treat #2: Watch Greg Nicotero’s ‘United Monster Talent’ Short

“The Walking Dead”‘s Special FX Make-Up Designer Greg Nicotero unquestionably knows his zombies. One look at the photos of his undead creations for the AMC series is proof enough of that. But Nicotero also knows his werewolves, his mummies and his creatures from the Black Lagoon. Need proof on that count, too? Check out his his short film, “The United Monster Talent Agency,” a faux promo for a fictional Hollywood agency representing monsters from Universal Studios circa 1950s. The short film features guest appearances by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel), Dana Gould (“The Simpsons”), Robert Rodriguez (Machete) and “The Walking Dead”‘s own Executive Producer and Director Frank Darabont (who fittingly plays a director). Where else would you see what Frankenstein’s monster and The Invisible Man do when the camera’s aren’t rolling? (more…) READ MORE

Dear Horror Cliche, Please Go Away.

Consider this an open letter to every cliche that’s ever made us laugh with its predictability, or weep at its implausibility. While I realize cliches are what makes the world go round, I’m pretty sure they’re right up there with other vital things like Jolly Ranchers and fossil fuels; the horror genre in particular tends to be plagued by these the most. More often than not the problem lies with just how extraordinarily difficult it is to scare someone who’s sitting on their couch, safely hidden deep under a mound of Cheetos, in their locked home surrounded by other homes. Other times this epidemic can by blamed on the film’s creator who, whether by a lack of imagination or money, wasn’t able to think of (or create) something startling and unpredictable. Here are some of the more annoyingly prevalent cliches out there that I really, really want to leave the horror genre and go back into Michael Bay’s films where they belong. (more…) READ MORE

First Look Inside Ti West’s Haunted Tale of ‘The Innkeepers’!

Ti West (The Roost, Trigger Man, The House of the Devil, Cabin Fever 2) is hot on the set of his latest genre pic, The Innkeepers, a ghostly tale of about the last two staffers (Sara Paxton and Pat Healy) of a haunted hotel that’s going out of business. Dark Sky Films has provided Bloody Disgusting with the first two images that feature Paxton (The Last House on the Left) and Healy inside the infamous Yankee Pedlar Inn, an actual haunted location in Connecticut. Blu-ray Review: ‘Cabin Fever: Director’s Cut’

Now on high-def Blu-ray everywhere is Eli Roth’s breakthrough indie genre pic, Cabin Fever, which is presented as a “Director’s Cut” featuring footage only seen at the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival years ago. In the film a group of five college graduates rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of the homicidal locals.
