Horror director, Greg Mclean, the man behind the Wolf Creek film, has a four part, bi-weekly online comic series set for release over the course of the next few weeks, titled Dark Axis. The series is published by Ape Entertainment and Diezel Punk, Mclean’s own company, and it ventures back to WW2 for an alternate history that involves Nazi monsters and machines (that’s a metaphor if I ever heard one) wreaking havoc all over Europe. Issue #1 was released on April 10 and you can purchase the next three issues through the COMICS+ App at iTunes for only a buck. Read on for the skinny… (more…) READ MORE

In the decade-plus period of time that has passed since the release of Scream 3, there’s no doubt that the horror landscape has changed significantly. In the intervening years we’ve witnessed the rise of the torture porn craze, seen a resurgence in “found footage”/shaky-cam horror, and watched helplessly as a seemingly unyielding series of remakes cluttered up our local multiplexes. Out of all the lists I’ve done for the site, this year’s best-of compilation was easily the most difficult to write. When I first starting thinking about this way back in August, I was hard pressed to come up with five films that I liked, let alone ones that were strictly horror. But by the time we crossed over into December and all was said and done, my tally sheet was much harder to sort through but for a different reason: I had to narrow a list of twenty-two films down to ten, with an extra three as honorable mentions. Even after I had run them through my normal list of criteria of what I think makes a film great, my count-down order changed numerous times, and only one question helped me determine the iteration you’re looking at now: if I had the option to march right back into the theatre after watching any of these to see it again, which ones would I watch first? Immediately, the fight between a killer tire and ballerina had a winner, and my decision as to whether or not a powerful film was worth including if it made me depressed for days afterwards became clear. It was announced today that Welsh film director Julian Richards (The Last Horror Movie, Summer Scars) has completed principal photography on his debut Hollywood feature film Shiver, a psychological thriller starring Danielle Harris (Halloween, Stake Land), John Jarratt (Wolf Creek), Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) and Rae Dawn Chong (Commando). Filmed on location in Los Angeles, California and Portland, Oregon, Shiver is a women in peril story about a young secretary stalked by a relentless serial killer who finds the courage to fight back. “Fans of Hitchcock, ‘Halloween’ and ‘Silence Of The Lambs’ will enjoy ‘Shiver,’ ” said Richards, “I set out to thoroughly torture the heroine whilst having fun with a killer that just won’t take no for an answer.” Post production on SHIVER is scheduled for completion in May 2011 with a world premiere planned for Toronto International Film Festival in September. It’s time to wrap up our SXSW Film Fest review coverage as Tim Anderson has submitted his thoughts on Sean Byrne’s Aussie thriller The Loved Ones, a film we’ve been praising here on B-D since last September (read my review). When Lola and her father kidnap Brent he must fight to survive the macabre celebration they have in store for him. Read his review below. (more…) READ MORE

Today B-D reader ‘Wolf Creek’ sent us in a new poster for Dimension Films’ Storm Warning, which was directed by Jamie Blanks (Urban Legend). The film, which combines elements of “Deliverance” and “Straw Dogs,” follows a husband and wife on a fishing trip gone very wrong. The other day Fangoria made an announcement that Dimension Films was dumping Greg McLean’s second feature film, Rogue, direct-to-video on May 20. The reputable Moviehole.net reports that the article was completely false as they got in contact with local distributors who clarify that the film is in fact getting a US theatrical release and that The Weinstein Company is still looking for a new date. I guess only time will tell who’s right. After impressing the masses with his Texas Chain Saw homage Wolf Creek, it would really be a disappointment to see McLean’s second film go right to DVD. Journeying home again, this time to the crocodile infested waters of Australia’s remote wetlands, the director’s wildlife boat tour is more down-under “Jaws” than “Crocodile Dundee.” Watch for more giant crocs later this year! This is pretty funny if you ask me, Hollywood Pictures’ pulled its giant croc film, Primeval, from a solid April 20 date and dumped the movie in theaters last month. The reason was to avoid Dimension Films’ Rogue, which unknowingly to them, was already pulled off the release schedule. Now here we are a month later and Dimension has slated the release of Greg McLean’s (Wolf Creek) second feature film on April 20, the exact same day Primeval was hitting theaters. Call it what you will: Insult to injury, missed opportunity, or just random luck – either way they’ve now got a strong date to work with. The film will open against David Arquette’s The Tripper on “National Pot Smoking Day”. (more…) READ MORE
