The Lost is one of the most faithful adaptations of a book to the screen. Ketchum has been captured onscreen almost perfectly. First time director Chris Sivertson shows that he knows exactly what he’s doing behind the camera. (even though he directed the less than stellar I Know Who Killed Me as his follow up) This film is brutal and intense but not in a overtly graphic way. It’s all tone and build up to a climax that will have you one the edge of your seat. Ray Pye is ready to explode and its damn exciting watching him about to lose it. The acting is pretty solid throughout the film especially by Marc Sentor who plays Ray Pye. People looking for a more fast paced film will be disappointed as this film takes its time and focuses more in the characters and tone rather than the blood and gets but if you stay along for the ride you will be more than likely be pleased with the results.
Outstanding! I watched this twice when I rented it and enjoyed every moment as it keeps you completely engaged throughout. The character development, acting, and pace were dead on. Do not pass on watching this movie….I hope to see much more from director Chris Sivertson. Total recommendation for all to see this movie!
This actually is a very good movie. It keeps you entertained from beginning to end. It’s too bad it didn’t get a theatrical release because it should have gotten at least a limited release. Don’t miss this one on DVD though.
I’ve seen horrible films before but, wow…I think we need a new word to describe this piece of shit.
Second best film of 2008.
amazing on so many levels.
I just finished watching this movie and i’m thinking to myself if i would have watched the first 10 minutes and the last 20 i would be happy. You can throw the middle out and all the characters with it. This is not a typical horror movie. Watch this when you have nothing else to do.
Such a great movie. The movie really showed how crazy Ray really is. A great movie. I loved the characters in this movie. Such a great satisfaction at the end.
I don’t read too well or at all, so I’m glad that they’re making Ketchum’s novels into movies lately. This is another pretty good one and again a little twisted.
This movie is freaking awesome I encourage everyone to watch it. This movie was as solid as they come. It is am wicked villain movie. Thats what I look at this movie and think. Its a villian movie. A kid who just got out of school with a imbalence taking peoples lives becouse they want nothing to do with him. Ray is the best thing since Patrick Bateman
Much of a crime story than horror. It should of got a theatrical release. Throughout the movie its sex drugs and fun. Not much killing. But at the end, the killer gather his victoms and shoots who ever gets in his way. It was a good crime movie.
This is a good movie. The rare horror movie that plays off of other genres and has a great musical soundtrack. I really liked the hipster theme to this film. It was funny and scary.
After just seeing this film, i definitely have some catching up to do on Jack Ketchum. What could very easily have been construed as just another slasher flick, or a movie that seeks to sensationalize violence, ends up being a styling and interesting film.
Marc Senter’s portrayal of Ray, the selfish, ego driven and ultimately insecure killer of the film. Marc seems to dominate nearly every scene he is in, which is saying something given the largely solid performances delivered by the cast. AT it’s heart, the Lost tells the tale of a deranged young man who one day kills two girls, simply because he could. Four years later and seemingly off the hook for the crimes, we gain insight into who Ray is, what his life is like and his influence on those around him.
When Ray finally goes off, he leads the audience on a kind of wild tour in which he seems to randomly kill people in order to get to the women he truly wants to possess. The violence is really relegated to the very beginning and very end of the film, but is well-done for when it is present. Having said that, I must clarify that I meant the murderous violence i at the beginning and the end, as Ray is both verbally and physically abusive to all of the people in his life.
While perhaps not quite a true horror film, this is a solidly made film, with interesting characters and ultimately it does scare one to think about. I also appreciate the way the film was shot in a faded manner that makes the movie look older than it really is, without being obnoxious.
All in all I really enjoyed the Lost and look forward to checking out more of Jack Ketchum’s work.
decent little flick. some silly acting but overall pretty enjoyable..
An overlooked masterpiece of horror. Brilliantly directed and acted. Accurately adapted, yet better than the book, which is rare. The ending left a chuckling theater in numb, gagging silence. A Ketchum story at its best. Siverston nailed it. I HIGHLY recommend this to horror fans.
A little too long in my opinion but it’s a pretty enjoyable movie. There’s some definite pacing issues, mainly in the middle of the film. The gore is pretty good, nothing spectacular. The story is pretty strong but the script isn’t. Most of the actors gave solid performances, I don’t think there was any actor who was miscast. It can be a little boring but stick with it, you might be surprised.
The Ultimate Movie Review! – http://tss5078.blogspot.com – @tss5078 – Jack Ketchum is a famed horror novelist, but as far as turning his stories into film is concerned, so far, it hasn’t been very successful. The only film based on his writing that I enjoyed, was The Offspring. The most recent one I watched, The Lost, was by far his worst. The story is about two detectives following a guy they know is a budding serial killer, a man who they suspect in a previous crime. With no evidence against him all they can do is watch him. First off this film is very slow moving, to point where I almost turned it off. Second, the main character, Ray (Marc Senter), is a complete and utter moron. I don’t know if the character was written that way or if the actor playing him was just that bad, but this guy was not believable at all! The story is rather hard to follow as well, mainly because throughout it, people just keep making statements about what they’ve seen or what they know, without providing those same details to the audience. Isn’t the point of a good mystery to make the audience think and figure things out for themselves instead of just having someone tell them everything? This movie was slow, poorly acted, and on top of that just plain stupid! Don’t waste your time on it.
