5 Horror Movies With Amazing Endings!!!

A few months back I wrote a piece that highlighted 5 horror films and the horrible endings that the filmmakers chose for them. But now it’s October and I’m in the mood for love, especially when it comes to my favorite genre, so it’s time to turn the tables and talk about the films that really hit it out of the park with their endings. Take The Expanded Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! How Do You Rank Now?

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). READ MORE

Take The Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! What’s Your Score?

This isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre. READ MORE

Early Production Stills from Lovecraftian ‘Dead Shadows’

An official Facebook has been launched for DC Medias’ now-filming French horror Dead Shadows, from David Cholewa. The early art screamed H.P. Lovecraft, while also channeling Frank Darabont’s The Mist. Fabian Wolfrom, Gwendolyn Gourvenec, John Fallon and Laurie Cholewa all star in the flick that’s now got a batch of production stills. They probably should have waited until they had something cool to show. Just sayin’… READ MORE

Hollywood Horror: A Capsule History of Stephen King’s Showbiz Career

By far the most adapted American author in Hollywood history, Stephen King’s novels and short stories have served as the basis for over 100 movies, short films, miniseries, and TV shows since his first book, Carrie, was made into a hit 1976 film directed by Brian De Palma. While subsequent adaptations have been anything but consistent – for every Misery or The Mist there are three times as many stinkers – there’s no overlooking the fact that King’s career is now irrevocably intertwined with the Hollywood machine. Blu-ray Review: Anchor Bay’s ‘Let Me In’

I don’t know if it’s intentional or just the weirdest coincidence, but three of the four films that were released on October 1st, 2010 in theaters are hitting DVD/Blu on February 1st, 2011. All were theatrical disappointments, partially due to overcrowding, so it’s kind of funny that they’ll be fighting for attention on the same day yet again. Chain Letter and Hatchet II, of course, never got wide releases and will see bigger audiences on DVD than they possibly could have in theaters, but Let Me In’s box office failure was a surprise to me – whatever my misgivings were about it being an unnecessary remake, it WAS a good film and the best way to experience the story if you were a foreign language-phobe. So now that it’s on DVD, perhaps it will find its audience and renew the “WHY?” debate all over again. (The fourth film was Case 39, and adding to this irony, was the most successful of the four and yet hit shelves much sooner – as if it was the biggest dud). (more…) READ MORE

Best & Worst ’10: HORROR GUY KEENAN’S TOP 10 OF 2010

It was a rough year finding good horror films in theaters. The last two years seemed to have some great gems. Not to mention a lot of theaters pulled some great horror movies out way to early (but I won’t go into that whole shenanigans right now). I had to look elsewhere for decent horror and stumbled upon a few I think will be soon to be classics. So read below and check out my top list of 2010. (more…) READ MORE

B-D Takes A Look At Chiller’s ’13′

The Sci-Fi Channel didn’t really come into their own until they started producing original programming, and now they are a force to be reckoned with, airing one of the most acclaimed genre shows in recent memory (Battlestar Galactica) and, as of today, producing films aimed at theatrical distribution. Well now it appears to be Chiller’s turn, as the horror network debuts its first original program: Chiller 13: The Decades Scariest Movie Moments. Read on for a look at what you can expect! TV: Promo Trailer for SyFy’s ‘Being Human’

After an insane few months of horror news, it’s been pretty slow. So slow I figured I might as well share this promo for SyFy’s upcoming “Being Human,” the remake of the BBC series that will air on January 17 at 9pm. Sam Witwer (The Mist), Meaghan Rath and Sam Huntington (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night) all star. The trip play three twenty-somethings who share a house and try to live a normal life despite being a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire. (more…) READ MORE

A Visit to the Set of James Wan’s ‘Insidious’ Part I

After a departure from the horror genre with 2007′s Death Sentence, director James Wan has re-teamed with Saw and Dead Silence partner Leigh Wannell for the supernatural horror/thriller Insidious, premiering next month in the Toronto Film Festival’s “Midnight Madness” category. Later on, he sat down with director James Wan at his Hollywood Hills home to pick his brain on the project. Read inside for all the details! (more…) READ MORE

Set Report Part 1: Bringing Kirkman’s ‘The Walking Dead’ to Life

Hands down the most anticipated horror project of 2010 is AMC TV’s The Walking Dead, a new series that’s set to premiere this coming October. Bloody Disgusting was lucky enough to spend a day on the set in Atlanta, Georgia to witness the great Frank Darabont (The Mist) filming the pilot episode. Adapted from Robert Kirkman’s astounding Image comic franchise, the project is set among a group of zombie survivors of an apocalypse who are led by a police officer, Rick Grimes, in search of a safe place to live. Each week over the next month we’ll be unrolling a new piece that’ll take you dear readers behind-the-scenes of what could be the horror event of the year. If “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men” weren’t enough, are you willing to become one of “The Walking Dead”? (more…) READ MORE

Dear Horror Cliche, Please Go Away.

Consider this an open letter to every cliche that’s ever made us laugh with its predictability, or weep at its implausibility. While I realize cliches are what makes the world go round, I’m pretty sure they’re right up there with other vital things like Jolly Ranchers and fossil fuels; the horror genre in particular tends to be plagued by these the most. More often than not the problem lies with just how extraordinarily difficult it is to scare someone who’s sitting on their couch, safely hidden deep under a mound of Cheetos, in their locked home surrounded by other homes. Other times this epidemic can by blamed on the film’s creator who, whether by a lack of imagination or money, wasn’t able to think of (or create) something startling and unpredictable. Here are some of the more annoyingly prevalent cliches out there that I really, really want to leave the horror genre and go back into Michael Bay’s films where they belong. (more…) READ MORE

TV: Casting Rounding Out for Darabont’s ‘The Walking Dead’

AMC continues to add to the cast of Frank Darabont’s apocalyptic zombie drama The Walking Dead by tapping Laurie Holden (Silent Hill) for the role of Andrea, a key member of the survivor group who has a proficiency with a sniper rifle and falls for a man twice her age. Holden was in writer-producer-director Darabont’s The Mist and had a recurring role in the final season of FX’s “The Shield.” In addition, newcomer Steven Yeun has been added to the cast as Glenn. He and Holden join Andrew Lincoln, Jeffrey DeMunn and Jon Bernthal on the show. The Image Comics adaptation is set among a group of zombie survivors of an apocalypse who are led by a police officer, Rick Grimes, in search of a safe place to live. (more…) READ MORE
