Special Feature: ‘Scream 4,’ Slicing Into New Rules & Conventions

In the decade-plus period of time that has passed since the release of Scream 3, there’s no doubt that the horror landscape has changed significantly. In the intervening years we’ve witnessed the rise of the torture porn craze, seen a resurgence in “found footage”/shaky-cam horror, and watched helplessly as a seemingly unyielding series of remakes cluttered up our local multiplexes. Miramax/Weinsteins Team on ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ and ‘Amityville’ Sequels

Miramax and The Weinstein Company today announced an agreement to create sequels to some of Miramax’s best-known properties and to partner on potential new television shows and special edition home entertainment products. Included in the announcement were sequels to (are you ready?) From Dusk Till Dawn and The Amityville Horror (finally). This partnership augments an existing relationship between the companies on such franchises as Scream 4 (to be released April 15, 2011), and Scary Movie 5. In addition, Miramax will handle digital distribution on select sequel projects. Miramax and TWC have also agreed to develop new, special edition materials for Blu-ray releases, such as roundtables featuring cast and directors. What would you want from a Dusk Till Dawn or Amityville sequel? The Amityville Tapes – a cinema verite-styled sequel – had been in development for quite some time, I wonder if this will be revived? Dimension Films to Remake ‘The Amityville Horror’…Again?

I just finished wiping away the tears of laughter as I just discovered that the Weinstein Company and Dimension Films are planning on remaking The Amityville Horror…again. Andrew Douglas directed the 2005 reboot produced by Platinum Dunes that grossed over $100m at the box office worldwide. I guess five years in the new 25? Our sources also tell us that there just might be a director already in talks to develop the project. Knowing Dimension Films, I’d expect this project to start and stop at least a dozen times before it ultimately fails. Alas horror fiends, don’t stress it no matter how idiotic this sounds. The original 1979 film followed newlyweds as they move into a house where a murder was committed, and experience strange manifestations which drive them away. MGM also retains different rights and were planning on developing The Amityville Tapes, which has been put on the back burner while MGM figures out their financial woes (auction anyone?). Summit ‘Conjures’ Up the Dough For New Haunted House Thriller

After the recent success of Lionsgate’s The Haunting in Connecticut, sequels are already in the works, while other companies are working hard on their own haunted tale. While MGM’s The Amityville Horror sequel appears to be on the rocks (as with the company), it seems only fit that someone take the reigns and bring us a new haunted house flick (as long as it’s better than Haunting in Connecticut). It was announced tonight that Summit Entertainment has just won a heated battle for the rights to Conjuring, that will be penned by the duo behind Warner Bros.’ forthcoming Whiteout adaptation. Read on for the skinny. (more…) READ MORE

Update: Margot Kidder Joins ‘H2′, New Title?

Update: Zombie edited his blog removing the new title, so we’ll keep you posted as the new title is officially revealed. Well known nutter and one of my favorite actresses from the 70′s, Margot Kidder (The Amityville Horror, Sisters, Superman, Black Christmas), has joined the cast of Rob Zombie’s Halloween sequel, which apparently has been given a new name. “Margot Kidder has joined Halloween – The Devil Walks Among Us as Laurie Strode’s therapist Barbara Collier,” writes Zombie on his official blog. I wasn’t a big fan of the moniker H2 and think Halloween: The Devil Walks Among Us is a pretty solid new title. Shooting is now underway in Georgia as Dimension has the film slated for release on August 28. (more…) READ MORE

UPDATE: MGM Takes ‘The Amityville Horror’ Online

Very important update can be found here: I hope you’re sitting down for this little gem of a scoop… MGM is currently out to writers for a new AMITYVILLE HORROR film. The franchise will continue on as a direct-to-disc release, with more than one sequel planned. But here’s the kicker, MGM wants the story to be focused around multimedia and “the internet” (I’m not kidding, how lame is that?). Haven’t these ‘effin suits learned anything from THE MANGLER 2.0, STRANGELAND, CRY WOLF, STAY ALIVE, SCREAM 3, PULSE, FEAR DOT COM, among others? What do you guys think they should do with the next AMITYVILLE HORROR? For those of you who don’t know, in the original ’70s film, which is based on “supposed” true events, newlyweds move into a house where a murder was committed, and experience strange manifestations which drive them away.
