I’m not 100% opposed to CGI work, in fact it can be a great tool when used to fix an unsolvable problem (on set or in the budget), but it drives me insane when studios toss aside physical product for a fully CGI feature. It’s just plain lazy, and cheap. Case in point, Francis Lawrence’s I Am Legend, which was a pretty solid movie sans the gag-inducing computer generated vampires. READ MORE

A Visit to the Set of James Wan’s ‘Insidious’ Part I

After a departure from the horror genre with 2007′s Death Sentence, director James Wan has re-teamed with Saw and Dead Silence partner Leigh Wannell for the supernatural horror/thriller Insidious, premiering next month in the Toronto Film Festival’s “Midnight Madness” category. Back in May B-D’s Chris Eggertsen had the opportunity to visit the set in downtown Los Angeles to check out some of the filming and talk to star Patrick Wilson, production designer Aaron Sims, and special makeup effects artist Justin Raleigh. Mark Smith Talks Untitled Paramount/Platinum Dunes Feature

A few weeks back it was announced that Paramount had set up an untitled horror project penned by Mark L. Patrick Tatopoulos Plans Bug ‘Colony’ Battle

Special effects maven-turned-helmer Patrick Tatopoulos (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans) is in negotiations to come aboard Participant Media and Summit Entertainment’s eco-horror tale The Colony, reports Heat Vision. Stacy Title and Jonathan Penner wrote the script, which was rewritten by David Lee Johnson. Colony revolves around a group of survivors forced underground by the next ice age. There, they must fight to preserve humanity against a savage threat. It has been described as The Birds with bugs. Production begins in the fall. Tatopoulos is responsible for the creature designs in such films as I Am Legend, I, Robot and the first two Underworld installments. (more…) READ MORE

Room 101/Platinum Dunes Team for Untitled Creature Feature

Paramount’s looking for more monsters, setting up an untitled horror project penned by Mark L. Smith (Vacancy, The Hole 3D) with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form along with Room 101′s Steven Schneider. Per the usual, the logline’s under wraps other than the story being in the vein of I Am Legend, Aliens and The Descent. Bay, Fuller and Form produced A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th for New Line and recently entered a new first-look deal at Par, where it’s developing several projects including a remake of Fred Dekker’s Monster Squad. Schneider exec produced Paranormal Activity for Paramount and is prepping the sequel with Jason Blum and Akiva Goldsman. He’s also producing Paranormal director Oren Peli’s follow-up feature Area 51 for Paramount. (more…) READ MORE

Stan Winston’s Creature Feature ‘Speed Demon’ Hits High Speed

Wow, I completely forgot about this project as it has been on the shelf for over three years. Paradox Entertainment, the company bringing Conan back to the bigscreen, has optioned the horror pitch Speed Demon, co-developed by the f/x-vet Stan Winston, for Peter Winther to direct. Winther also developed the project, described as a supernatural actioner about an underworld enforcer, who while hunting a small-time crook on a desert highway discovers that he is also being tracked by a mysterious, terrifying creature. Mike Sorrentino and Randy Vampotic penned the script for the project that Patrick Tatopoulos (the Underworld franchise, I Am Legend) worked with Winston to design creatures for the film. Update: ‘Jonah Hex’ Reshoots? Francis Lawrence Consulting?!

Updated: An insider is telling Bloody Disgusting that Warner Bros. Pictures is prepping a few new weeks of shooting for their comic book adaptation of Jonah Hex, which is slated for release on June 18, 2010. Jimmy Hayward , who directed the DC comics adaptation, is getting back behind the camera with Francis Lawrence – the man behind I Am Legend and Constantine – consulting. This has been CONFIRMED. Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Michael Shannon all star. Hex (played by Brolin), known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood. Early Plot Details For ‘I Am Legend’ Prequel/Sequel?

This morning AICN got an inside tip regarding the storyline for Warner Bros. Pictures’ I Am Legend II, which they’re jokingly referring to as II AM LEGEND (kinda awesome). ‘I Am Legend’ Ultimate Collector’s Edition

Warner Home Video has announced an Ultimate Collector’s Edition of I Am Legend, which stars Will Smith. Both the DVD ($49.92) and Blu-ray ($59.99) releases will include two versions of the film, a Digital Copy of the theatrical version, plus hours of all new additional content for release on December 9th. DVD Active reports that this additional content consists of four awesome animated comics, 12 never before seen deleted scenes with filmmaker commentary, and more than two hours of all new extras revealing Will Smith’s off-camera humor and kindness and explanation of how he grew as an actor through this film. Lastly, the UCE also includes an exclusive 44-page concept sketch book, a lenticular lucite commemorative piece featuring imagery from the film, and six collectible art cards showing international cities devastated by the virus. ‘I Am Legend’ Ending Reshot? That’s What Warner Bros. Says!

Warner Bros. confirmed to CHUD that the ending was reshot fro the Will Smith starrer I Am Legend, which hits theaters December 14. What’s not confirmed is what has been reshot. Their source tells them that the ending was redone, as the studio wasn’t happy with the finale that director Francis Lawrence had. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable…and manmade.
