Bloody Disgusting’s List of ‘Horror Unmakes’!

One of the most infamous remakes of all time is Gus Van Sant’s pointless shot-by-shot interpretation of Psycho, which was released to a horde of “why did they bother?” admonishments and an almost complete lack of interest from the general public. Putting aside the relative merits of the film’s technical aspects, the update is generally regarded as a badly failed experiment and, perhaps even worse, an empty exercise on the part of a filmmaker too wrapped up in his own indulgences. Film Deal Transpires in Aftermath of ‘Dead Island’ Trailer Hype

Earlier this week we all had our minds blown by the announcement trailer for Dead Island, an open world video game in development by Techland for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The brutal and quite sad trailer flashes reverse footage of a zombie attack revealing the destruction of a family. Easily one of the most buzzed about games of the year, you can watch the footage inside (editor’s note: the footage and characters may not even represent the actual game). READ MORE

With the Sundance Film Festival in full effect, ex-Guns ‘n Roses guitarist Slash has been all over the news with dribbles of announcements regarding his newly launched Slasher Films. Finally a New Dean Koontz Adaptation: ‘Odd Thomas’ Speaks to the Dead

Production Weekly reports that Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing, Deep Rising) is eyeing to direct his adaptation of Dean Koontz’s popular “Odd Thomas” book series. Odd Thomas is silently approached by the ghost of a young girl brutally raped and murdered, and through his unique ability to understand the dead, is psychically led to her killer, a former schoolmate named Harlo Landerson. With this opening, we are introduced to Odd’s world. Koontz soon discloses how Odd was named and begins, layer by layer, to show how Odd’s disfunctional upbringing has shaped his life, and as those details are uncovered, his supernatural abilities begin to make more sense. ‘The Mummy’ Revived Over at Dimension as Low Budget Fare

While capturing what Paranormal Activity had is like winning the lottery, the lesson it should be delivering is that a studio can make a good movie for a modest budget. Sh*t, with the announcement of J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 this morning, it had me thinking back to the success of Cloverfield, and then shaking my head in dismay. Not a single studio learned a thing from Abrams. It took a $15k indie film to knock some sense into these fools. Anyways, Dimension Films, a studio not known for being smart or frugal, must have received a lobotomy as they’re putting a low budget spin on the resurrection of The Mummy! Read on for the skinny. Morgan Creek’s Dream House isn’t going to be able to contain all these egos. Jim Sheridan is directing from a David Loucka script. Watts will play a neighbor who was close to the slain family. Lensing began Sunday in Toronto. (more…) READ MORE

Year in Review: Mr. D’s Worst Horror Films of 2008!

What a year, what a year. While everyone else includes DVDs in their best and worst lists, I solely focus on films that hit theaters. While compiling my lists, I couldn’t believe how hard it was to pick ten films that I felt were worth even mentioning as “the best”. While I barely succeeded, the worst list was much easier, which was pretty disappointing from my standpoint. That means this was a lousy year for horror and that the majority of horror films released were bad. Looking forward to 2009, I can’t say I expect anything different next year, but one can only hope… beyond the break you can check out my list of the worst horror films of 2008. Don’t forget you can chime in with your own lists and thoughts below, or write your own reviews in our MoviePit. (more…) READ MORE
