Not all sequels are welcome, seeing as many of them besmirch some of our otherwise favorite films and/or franchises. Most of the time we can count on franchises to burn themselves out anyway. Freddy’s Dead and Jason Goes To Hell were never really on anyone’s wish list, were they? Are you really glad you saw Seed Of Chucky or do you think that Child’s Play might be better regarded today if it had remained a standalone film? READ MORE
The passing of time provides us with context and perspective. And, when it comes to film, while box office is the most immediate gauge of a film’s impact – it’s not the best. Time and context are the best gauges. When you watch Slither or The Thing now do you think of their underwhelming box office? Probably not. You think about how you’ve seen them a million times and still love them (unless you read my article in October), which is how it should be. Box office is temporal and ultimately irrelevant to your enjoyment READ MORE
We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). READ MORE

The thought of being terrorized in the safety of your own home will always rank right up as one of people’s biggest fears. Filmmakers are very aware of this since they’ve been dwelling into this terrifying concept time and time again with the never passé, home invasion subgenre. It’s been the perfect avenue for directors to showcase/show-off their technical craft. Some of my favorites have been Straw Dogs (the Peckinpah original, of course) Black Christmas (don’t you dare ask which one), Funny Games (both versions actually), Panic Room, Inside and the criminally underseen, Them. In the decade-plus period of time that has passed since the release of Scream 3, there’s no doubt that the horror landscape has changed significantly. In the intervening years we’ve witnessed the rise of the torture porn craze, seen a resurgence in “found footage”/shaky-cam horror, and watched helplessly as a seemingly unyielding series of remakes cluttered up our local multiplexes. Update: This long gestured project from literally years ago is from Jake Wade Wall. Originally set up at Universal under the title ‘Anguish’, inside you’ll find a synopsis. Pajiba, a site that’s struggles with accuracy, is reporting that Mandate Pictures (The Grudge, Drag Me to Hell, The Strangers) is developing Cineplex, a movie based on a pitch envisioning the horror movie as the next Scream. It’s about a group of teens watching a horror movie who are taken by surprise when the villain of the film attacks them in real life. Sounds like the exact same plot as Jack Messitt’s Midnight Movie, no? Either way, it’s a fun premise I think I’d enjoy as a big budget fare. (more…) READ MORE
Bloody Disgusting exclusively learned that Jonathan Jakubowicz (Southbound) will be taking the helm instead of The Strangers director Bryan Bertino for Black, a thriller in development over at Rogue. In addition, we got the drop on the previously unannounced story details. Penned by Bertino, the film will take place over the span of 100 hours and will follow a group of people on a bus that are attacked by an unidentified monster terrorizing the nearby towns. Awesome. Producer Edward Pressman and director Mary Harron are teaming up for the first time since American Psycho on the Gothic horror The Moth Diaries and have cast British star Lily Cole (Marilyn Manson’s forthcoming Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll) and Scott Speedman (Underworld, Anamorhph, The Strangers) to star. A late summer shoot in Montreal has been lined up for the story based on Rachel Klein’s cult novel about an elite New England boarding school where a mysterious young girl arrives amid a spate of campus deaths.
