OK so im sure a lot of people went into this thinking its gunna be like species.but not at all this film more takes after an older monster movie like Bride of Frankenstein. From the trailer the movie portrays a typical monster movie :creepy little creature, people screaming , monster snatching people up.This movie does include those things yet you build a connection and actually feel bad for the creature at one point.a lot of role reversal between brody and polley during the film which i did like. This is the kinda monster flick thats messed up in the sense its gunna make you feel a bit weird.A little uncomfortable so now that i explained a lil what i like about the movie (and hopefully i didn’t give away too much) heres were i think it fell short. First off this isn’t a gorey movie.Like at all. There were also some things with Sarah polley’s back story I wish they had gone into a bit more. There are a couple scenes were you will laugh but not in a campy way(but with me thats a plus, overly serious horror only works on some levels with me and campy can be just to goofy at times). So if your looking for body count this is the wrong kinda movie for you.Visually the film is awesome. The creature looks awesome I love the mix of cg and live action. This film seems to be more for those into foreign or psychological horror.Good examples would be Masters Of Horror Jennifer and maybe some more of the Asian stuff although not anywhere as intense as Miike’s stuff.I give it a 5/10 worth watching once if your into the messed up scfi horror kinda thing.

This is not a horror movie, some critics say its the scariest movie of 2010, they should be fired. Anyone who liked this movie should be shot in the fuckin head. its 90 minutes of bullshit and than 2 people die. Really, you are gonna dress up the creature and put her in makeup?? oh, and than your gonna dance with her before fucking her. this movie is a joke, 10 people were in the theater at midnight release, 5 walked out 45 minutes later. there is no horror in it at all, i demanded my money back.

LMAO… innerspieces sex… WTF. IS all I say.Movie was good, not amazing in any respect, just a good movie. Everybody’s bitchin about those scenes, they weren’t disturbing at all. At least for me. I’ve seen 10000000 worst shit then that.

But it was a pretty neat sci-fi drama/.

uhm, yeah. WTF. that’s all i could say for a good 20 minutes after the movie. all it has is shock value. sure, there’s blood. but the main thing that will draw people is the shock of it all. and i like that the trailers didn’t give away any of the totally fucking insane last like, 45 minutes of it. i would definitely see it. but only once

Upon entering the theatre to view this film I had taken with me the disenchantment I had developed for horror films in general. I will confess that my general mentality is quite often of an extremely small demographic. It seems that within modern American fiction whenever a complex scientific theorem or precedent is conveyed an astute character is conveniently written into the work who will explain these processes to the audience in detail thus preventing any form of mystery or the potential mental imaginings pertaining to a mystery. Simply put, the best science fiction does not explain itself. I was pleasantly surprised that this film was obviously created for a more intelligent audience than the typical science fiction or horror film. Which I am certain will destroy any hope of a significant box office return for this film in America. Having said all of this, I adored this film. When the credits for Splice appeared I was completely prepared to watch the film a second time. I had not enjoyed a science fiction horror film this much since I had been exposed to the Canadian production of the film Cube a few years earlier. The underlying premise of the film Splice is highly imaginative and long over due. Two geneticists combine human DNA with that of a variety of terran flora and fauna with unexpected results. Glossing over the need to explain the real world dynamics of a man made fetal incubation chamber, the two geneticists who create this hybrid life form walk a precarious line between objectifying and anthropomorphizing this creation. Fortunately, I was unable to predict the eventual outcome of this ethical nightmare, and I am always pleased when I cannot predict the outcome of a film. There are several CGI renderings within this film that are near perfect examples of contemporary fantastic art. Mister Del Toro obviously has a grand eye for recognizing and developing relevant modern art, and if Mister Del Toro is willing to use his name and money to develop this type of art I sincerely wish him the best possible success. All film work is a labor intensive artistic collaboration of the highest order, and this film is that rare event when the collaborative effort works. Everyone involved in the creation of this film has woven together a relevant phantasmagoric tale of men and women attempting to control a world that is far too complex to ever fully understand. You and your company shall have fuel for conversation for quite some time, and is not the instigation of discussion both the purpose and highest praise for art? I highly recommend you see this film.

EXTREMELY WEIRD.. i’ve seen alot of wierd stuff before but this takes weird and bizarre to a new level.. it WAS well made though and it did have a great premise and good performances by brody and polley.. this movie was made for one reason.. to shock.. and i can say it did shock me.. i wasn’t disturbed but i was shocked at the lengths at which the film went to.. its something i never expected.. I don’t know if i liked it or hated so i’m gunna place this dead in the center with 2.5/5

Brilliant. This movie does to genres what Brody and Polly’s characters do to DNA. Except unlike their experiment, this one worked.

Experiencing this film in a crowded theatre was a pleasure. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen people interact with a movie so enthusiastically. Admittedly a lot of people disliked it, and understandably so.

It’s the “Adaptation” of the Sci-Fi/Horror world!

I understand if someone liked it for the first half but jeez after that it got so weird and stupid. & the sex stuff…omg everyone was laughing and when it was over I heard atleast 5 people say it was the worst movie they have ever seen! AVOID IT! Not the worst movie I’ve ever seen but maybe the worst this year so far.

Well the movie was interesting for about 20 min but overall it was pretty boring. Any avid movie watcher would consider this film ultra predictable. I saw everything that was going to happen they didnt hide it well at all which to me ruined the shock value. Not the worst movie ive seen this year but its down there unfortunately.

This movie was great, superb acting, great effects and stayed original with an unoriginal premise by going places most studios wouldn’t dare. I think the general audience who went to watch it though unfortunately think it’s going to be this big creature feature, but it’s much more than that. It’s a fine character study about these two scientist, the boundaries they will cross, and the bond they have with this creature. Plus It’s been a while since I’ve seen audience reaction like this, it was pretty awesome hearing all those gasps.

Splice defines the term “a breath of fresh air”. The storyline was really original and stylish. The movie, well the movie was extremely bizarre, especially the final half of it. It was so weird and unsuspecting and it kinda changed some of my thoughts to the movie. But overall, Splice was a pretty good sci-fi/horror movie. The blood was minimal which I enjoyed alot cause too much blood in a movie like this would be stupid. Dren was such a stylistic character. The acting was also great. The compatibility between Sarah Polley and Dren is so creepy and errie. Oh and the CGI effects were actually really good. All in All, Splice was a good horror movie that would have been excellent if the ending was a bit tweaked.

It isnt exactly a “Horror” film, at least in the likeness of other films on this sight, but it wasnt terrible either, in fact, the sci-fi aspect of this film was tremendous, and done well.

My only real gripe was Elsa’s (Sarah Polley) obvious motherly instinct to keep the monster. It is the most annoying, but, necessary aspect of this entire film, and i really started to hate her halfway through. If you are able to deal with this necessary evil, then there is much to find interested with this film, i believe it delivers all the way to the end. If you expect over the top Rob Zombie-esque gore, you will not be pleased, the gore is placed in this film where needed, and plot is a strong one, the science is effectual. This is a good film.

Completely weird and fun. Splice has a very fresh appeal (especially amidst summer blockbusters) that shouldn’t be overlooked. This movie goes to some very strange places and its a thrill to see them unfold.

Extremely solid production all around and amazing creature work pull you into the film’s world. This film has everything; sci-fi, horror, drama, action, a little humor thrown in, and a huge ending. This could be my sleeper hit of the summer similar to District 9 last year…very entertaining!

sure not perfect. i thought Sarah Polley at times was not at her best and i didn’t completely buy one of the final twists. But most of it was really, really good i thought. The character developmentis great, I really got attached to Dren, and the special effects… WOW. I really don’t understand the people bashing it. It’s the perfect combination of Sci-fi and horror, with a good touch of silliness. It’s a real breath of fresh air in a see of remakes and botched Hollywood movies.

I, for one, am baffled as to how many so called horror fans can bash such a wondrous film without feeling a little bit retarded. Seriously, it’s movies like this that assist in defining the genre. It’s bat shit crazy, it’s bloody, it makes you feel uncomfortable and all while exploring the roller coaster of emotions our protagonists are forced to endure. Just like a true horror masterpieces should. They just don’t make them like they used to.

I guess some people are more satisfied with torture porn and an endless supply of remakes than something truly fucked up.

Personally I love movies that push any envelope and I love horror in all its forms, if you don’t think this is horror then look up what horror entails, I was horrified thus it counts. I love it, Fucked up as it is and well the cat deserved it so yeah my personal choice, so GET BENT YOU WANKERS!

Just saw Splice tonight. While buying my ticket i over heard an employee at the theater saying that she heard Splice was terrible. I told her i was seeing it and that i would tell her when i left how it was.
I personally thought it was awesome. I was grossed out, I was interested which kept me from getting bored. I liked the Nature over Nurture meaning. Though i do think the sex scene was over the top, i didn’t think it was comedic nor stupid and neither than anyone else in the theater from what i heard.
I was not too fond of the “Male” but it made the ending tense in the edge of your seat way. overall i said 7 out of 10.

Very interesting and very very strange movie. Go in with an open mind, and don’t listen to the childish reviews. If you go in thinking this is going to be a creature feature, where Dren goes around slaughtering helpless victims, you are going to be disappointed. This isn’t that type of movie. I would say this movie borders more on drama than horror. Dramatic horror? Either way, I enjoyed it. My biggest gripe is that the pace was a little on the slow side. That being said, I think this movie pushes the envelope and hopefully more major studios will take chances with some upcoming horror movies.

I liked the way the movie starts off. It can be thought of as a message of not continuing stem cell research or human cloning. Both considered bad ideas if you watched this film. Then it slowly turns into Species. The fear of a new alien species to be intruduced into the world to eventually destroy the human race. The last scenes of this film looked like the writer simply ran out of gas or ideas to eventually arrive to an equitable de nu mas. It was rather dissapointing to me. Then the all too classic ending – the pregnant woman showing a promise of perhaps a sequel to this crazy genetic experiment gone mad. I think they would be better off going back to the drawing board and try something new and better.

I just got back from seeing it. I will say that the only action, including kills, takes place in the last 20 mins of the movie. So it definitely felt like a scifi/drama. I am a fan of horror, scifi, and of course scifi/horror. To me, Splice sucked at being a good movie in any category. I was bored. People I was with kept going outside to smoke because they were so bored. I stayed and watched. I gave it a shot. I chose the movie tonight, and I wanted to enjoy it. I kept waiting for something to happen. I felt like the movie threw everything into the “experiment”. I mean it wanted u to be like. “oh wow. Look at the creatures legs, or Im amazed by the special effects”. Trouble is, if u have seen Jurassic Park, Species, or (insert name of movie here) any movie built up on special effects, then its an old trick. I mean if it had more happening. The trailer led me to believe the creature would be sneaking around, killing, whatev; it stays in a lab or a barn the entire movie. Im sorry, but I hated this movie.

After seeing Splice yesterday I have to admit that the idea of the movie is great and more realistic than e. g. Resident Evil. The research of protein folding, DNA deciphering, etc. is an ongoing process which is actually happening and also the search of pharma companies for completely new cures against deseases, disabilities etc. Billions of Dollars are spent in real life just as in the movie Splice.

The story is interesting and well watchable, however, the growing up of DREN is a little bit lengthy. The movie completely changes after about 2/3 of the total time and turns more violent. Especially the intimate scenes between DREN and her “father / mother” do not really suit the movie. The end of the movie appears to be set up to add more action to the movie and shows in my honorable opinion a lack of creativity.

Summa summarum I would say the movie is watchable and enjoyable if you do not mind the points mentioned above.

Highly interesting and unique genetic scifi/horror/drama from “Cube”-director Natali, sadly too predictable and with a disappointing finale.
The cast is great (Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley and a fantastic performance from Delphine Chanéac), the effects are great, the camera work is beautiful and there’s some brilliant atmosphere throughout the movie. Sadly, there are just too many flaws (especially in the last third) that almost destroy the movie: many lengthy, boring and unnecessary scenes, a messed up script with many plot holes and a terribly underwhelming ending, and way too much predictability in the script (I guessed the ending after the first 20 minutes or so). Too bad.

Just saw this last night at the Melbourne film festival, it definitely had it’s flaws but I still enjoyed it, it was pretty different from anything I had seen and was more of a slow paced sci-fi drama than a horror movie… One scene in particular I found a little unbelievable and wish they atleast tried to make sense of it and the ending was kinda predictable, otherwise a good watch.

Alright, so I enjoyed this movie. I loved the actors, effects, and look of the movie and found it to be original. It’s definitely unconventional and bizzare, but I didn’t quite think it went TOO far for it’s own good as I’ve understood many people to believe. I liked it, but I can see how some people may completely not get it and just totally reject some of the things it tries to pull off, but I thought this was a vastly interesting look into what could happen to the people who decide to actually screw around with human and animal DNA and cloning. Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody were awesome. The actress who played Dren. Pretty good monster movie! Reminded me in a way of Jeepers Creepers, but a savvy, more serious sci-fi version.

This movie was actually pretty good. It is not a horror film so if you go in with that mindset you will hate it. Its more of a slow paced sci-fi. The way the 2 main characters handled some of the situations was just completely unrealistic but I was able to look past that and enjoy the film. Pretty cool special effects but they can be inconsistent throughout the film.

SaaayWhaaat? Another example of how a trailer can really misguide you. This was an alright SciFi flick but by no means a horror. As unique as they made this creature out to be, it sure didn’t do anything too interesting. I don’t know what was more frightening, Adrien Brody having sex with Dren, or Dren having sex with Adrien Brody. Hopefully the sequel (which they hinted at) takes a different approach.

Was just OK. Some good effects in places but mostly all CG. Did lack tension wanted to see a bit more carnage. Splice was also very predictable nothing new here, you also don’t really give a damn about the main cast except for DREN. Chimera (90′s made for UK TV mini series) was far more effective, where most of the material for this movie was taken from. Meh!!….Just average.

I was dissappointed with this movie. I’m not saying it was bad but I guess I just had different expectations. The movie was actually very interesting and the evolution of dren was well done. One of the things I didn’t like though was how the characters basically just switched their feeling first adriend brody wanted to get rid of it then he started to care sarah polley vice versa liked it then didn’t. In sarahs case we saw her childhood wasn’t good so the way she ended up acting did make sense. I defininitely didn’t like the ending because it went the one way I didn’t want the movie to go and there really was no closure. I didn’t really see this as the type of movie that needed a sequel but you know hollywood. If you decide to rent it its not bad but its not your typical bloody alien movie if thats what you want to see its more of about science gone wrong.

I just remembered that I never reviewed this film when I first saw it in theatres so I figured I would review it now since I just watched it again on Blu-Ray. This was something truly special. It really was not a surprise that this did not connect with a mainstream audience but it is a treat for any horror or scifi fan. Some people may be turned off by the latter portion of the film but I truly believe that is what sets it apart from other genre fare. It isnt afraid to go to that place most theatrical releases wont dare to go. The truly taboo and indecent, Natali at his finest. If anything the film could have less of a prologue and more of Dren’s development into the hell creature “it” became. Overall this is a great film and a cult classic in my book.

*spoilers throught* although this was not horror like i expected, i still loved it. it was a sci fi drama about a hybrid human and other assortments of creatures. it devolps an electra complex and has sex with its father, the father doing so because the creature, Dren, reminds him of his wife who he has grown distant from. in its teenage years it gets angsty and starts to rebel against her mother. then it undergoes a sex change, like their past failed mutation, and becomes rageful. people say the rape scene was unecessary but it just underwent a hormonal change and now is filled with raging testerone and what does testerone fuel? a male’s rage and sex drive. so what does it do? it ragefully rapes its former creator and impregnates her. its a sci fi tragedy drama movie with a really intriguing storyline that i got wrapped in, that pushes the limits with its last scene which makes me love it all the more.

Was kinda entertained and thought the story was fairly cool until the reeeediculous scene with Brody and Dren. Not a shocker, not anything over the top—just plain dumb. Adrien Brody, former Oscar winner—-feel for you, man. Decent beginnings, decent body–WTF final 1/3 , and not-so-great ending. I bought this with some expectations—letdown. A rental is ok.

Splice is far more of a science fiction film, than an actual horror movie. In fact, aside from literally the last 5-10 minutes, Splice had no major horror elements going for it.

Splice deals with the issue of gene splicing and of course with the notion of ethics and how far one is willing to go in the name of science.

My issue with the film is largely with the radically inconsistent behavior of its main characters, the normally talented Adrien Brody and a favorite of mine Sarah Polley.

Seldom have I seen a movie where a character swings moods from scene to scene quite so often. First Adrien Brody is the ethical one. He has serious issues and wants the experiment stop. Then, out of the blue, he is all of a sudden okay with it. Judging by one particular scene, he was more than okay with it.

I feel like the writers should have spent far more time developing Polley’s character, if they wanted to provide rationale for her actions. They tack on a few scenes that allude to a rough childhood, but they pull up short of defining her in a way that would have lent credence to her actions.

With there is certainly a good 60 minutes of movie on display here, the other 40 minutes seem to have been chocked full of disappointing scenes. I would have preferred either a science experiment gone wrong horror film, or a shocking morality play on science and how far some folks are willing to go in the name of science.

Instead we are treated to a mash-up of the two that takes a promising story and presents a fairly disappointing film. Wait for this one on a movie channel, or even better on a free cable channel.

This movie was strange and disapointing that it has the research going on and they can;t even make a better human then that just some big ass bird that was part human, also they looked like the lamest research people I ever seen. The only part I thought was ok when the bird switch from female to male. It was a flop totally.

please someone put clothes on that chick that played the creature… nudity is one thing but anarexic and bulimic sick looking thing, please dont ever show us that again. me and my friends were vomiting from that. and the movie, why call it a horror? the last 10 minutes were considered horror but the rest…. absolutely stupid, everyone dont waste your time with such a pathetic piece of film can’t even call it a movie, movies, can normally either be good or even okay. this one I wanted to rate -10…. what a disaster. if you dont like stupid flicks and 90 pound brods who need to seriously gain like 30 to 40 pounds, dont ever consider this flick….stupid, disgusting for sure, and not worth the time you put to watching it. -10 rating all the way

What starts out as a pretty strong, captivating and somewhat moving science fiction/drama soon falls apart in its last act. The acting, mood and atmosphere were all solid as well as the premise and the creature is beautiful but it just got more strange as it moved on and it lost my respect for it. It is a very smart movie compared to most in its genre and it could of been great kind of like Gattaca meets Frankenstein but it turned into something more like Species meets Jeepers Creepers but more weird and not as entertaining. I just don’t know why they decided to throw in horror elements towards the end I mean it just didn’t need it and it lost any novel soul it had at that point which is disappointing because it could of been something more, something special. Overall if you are looking for a gory sci-fi/horror movie look elsewhere but if you are in the mood for a strange character driven sci-fi/drama with some unnecessary horror elements thrown in here you go. I for one say skip it.

i really enjoyed this… found it oddly predictable right to the end and feel it needed another step- another nasty unexpected step, but the film had a creepy feel, fum effects and was a great little unnerving piece, oddly my wife who didnt really want to watch it loved it and we leant it to some non-horror fan friends who found it very disturbing so maybe that shows you the audience- but give this a go= it wont blow your mind but it will fill a gap- best enjoyed with red wine!

Splice is a knockout horror film of 2010. Very unique and very well made. The effects are pretty great and the characters are well portrayed. To be honest, I do not understand why the ending seems so crazy to everyone who has seen the film. Did you listen to the movie? I understood the story and premise and the ending seemed pretty natural. Never felt out of place or extremely odd. So I don’t understand what everyone is saying about it. It has its flaws as all films do but Splice is a minature breakout film. The director and writers took a risk by creating something completley unique and I respected it. Splice is a must see.

the first 2/3 i thought were fun to watch. i liked the science parts of it, the whole idea of a couple of nerds playing around with nature is a little scary (even though you know our government has been doing it for decades), and the creature it’s self is pretty cool. the problem i had with this movie is that it turned out to be some kind of love story, or drama. the kill scenes were very lame, and the ending was was just as stupid. this is the kind of movie that Cronenburg was born to make, he would have made it alot better i think. anyway’s, it’s worth a watch but it is not that good overall.

This movie was very idiosyncratic and exotic but the dark horror was very well, I thought the actors did good but I did not really care for Sarah Polley’s performance in a couple scenes. There were some parts ( i am not going to spoil) that should of not been in the film but other wise this strange but good horror flick is pretty swell.

I thought was a decent Sci Fi horror experiment gone wrong type a film.I didn’t care for the acting by Brody and Polley they looked like someone farted around them the whole flick. The special effects were very good. The controversial material wasn’t that shocking to me it was kind of f*cked up, but it made the film better for some odd reason. This could have been better but wasn’t bad.I recommend a viewing but once is enough!

This is really a good film. It’s not going to change your life or anything. It’s a well-made, mad-scientist, modern Frankenstein movie. Not scary. Adrien Brody’s character’s relationship with his creation is more than a little fucked-up. Definitely worth your time and money for a rental. If the plot synopsis sounds at all interesting to you, I think you’ll like it. Solid.

Great movie, great story, original in the way which is told, suspenseful, entertaining, good actors, sexy, different. And the sex scene between Adrien Brody’s character and creature I enjoyed it and grateful to include this scene is not something you see commonly.Very good.

SPLICE starts with genetic engineers creating a human being mixed with other animal DNA to create a brand new life form. It ends with incest and rape (in that order, both more than on one occasion, and often at the same time). It stands toe to toe with THE HUMAN CENTEPEDE as grossest movie of the year, or the past several years for that matter. The difference between the two is CENTEPEDE is all shock value and SPLICE is an honest to god well made movie.

Adrian “my nose is so big it prevents me from accomplishing day to day tasks that most people take for granted” Brody has finally gotten the hint that no one buys him as the handsome leading man and plays more to type here as a geeky scientist. His equally genius scientist wife is played by Sara “yes i was that little girl in disney’s ANN OF AVONLEA” Polly, arguably this generation’s most underrated actress. They are working on gene splicing to create brand new life forms so that we can cut them to pieces and find the cures for cancer and stuff. Wait, it’s inhumane to experiment on animals, but its fine if we INVENT new animals to test stuff on? Anyway these two celebrity scientists crack the code for the gene of “life” and against orders and on the down low they create a human. They name her DREN which is nerd backwards. This is one of several fun plays on names and words. Early experimental life forms are named Fred and Ginger (as in Astaire and Rodgers). Indeed the scientists are named after Dr. Frankenstein and his bride. I like a horror movie with a sly sense of humor.

DREN grows at a rapid pace and quickly starts showing signs that there may be more animal than human inside. To reveal any more would be a disservice to this movie. Its strongest suit is in taking unexpected twists and to reveal them here would rob most of the fun. I say “fun” but that depends on what you consider a good time at the movies. Like I said before, there is incest and rape galore in this sucker and the film never shies away from any of it. However beneath all the schlock and horror movie cliché’s this movie relishes in dishing out are strong moral quandaries and frankly some amazing character work by our three leads. If man is the one that created the life, does it have a soul? Where is the line between scientist and experiment and mother and child? What is the difference between hard science and marketable science and that ever lovable sci fi troop “how far would YOU go?” Let’s just say like the Canadian teen soap opera DEGRASSI this mofo “GOES THERE” and then keeps going and then runs it over and then goes in reverse and backs up over it.

SPLICE was produced and co written by Guillermo Del Toro, the man responsible for THE ORPHANAGE as well as PANS LABYRINTH and the HELLBOY films. His love of gothic horror and creature features is on full display in this, his sickest and most depraved movie yet. I do not recommend this to anyone with a weak constitution, but if you like your thrillers with smarts then walk, don’t’ run to see this ($10 to anyone who gets that reference!).

Transsexual sex. Yep, it’s Splice alright. I don’t get all the hoopla around here, but it’s not bad. The dialogue can range from decent to shaky, but what really brings it home are its unique subject matters and its unpredictability. It’s serviceable.

I was actually very impressed by Splice. It’s a sort of slow-burn horror film, but that’ not to say that the build-up is slow. I found it to be very interesting, with a screenplay that throws up a bunch of provocative questions and nasty surprises. The idea is original and refreshing in a torture-porn era and it engaged me throughout. The main characters were interesting, developed and likable. I found it fascinating to watch their lives spiral out of control as the creture begins to grow up. The CGI effects were actually pretty good and the finale was brilliantly exciting with quite a disturbing ending. I liked Splice a lot!
