We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). READ MORE
One of the most infamous remakes of all time is Gus Van Sant’s pointless shot-by-shot interpretation of Psycho, which was released to a horde of “why did they bother?” admonishments and an almost complete lack of interest from the general public. Putting aside the relative merits of the film’s technical aspects, the update is generally regarded as a badly failed experiment and, perhaps even worse, an empty exercise on the part of a filmmaker too wrapped up in his own indulgences. One of the most terrifying films ever made was John Carpenter’s They Live, part sci-fi thriller and part social satire, told the story of a down-on-his-luck construction worker (Roddy Piper) who discovers glasses that let him see aliens walking among us and controlling humanity. With a remake long in the works, Cloverfield and Let Me In director Matt Reeves hopes to tell his own version that’s heavily inspired by the long-pondered conspiracy theory that’s definitely chilling. The beginning of a new decade is always a great time for reflection – both on what’s come before and where we’re headed. Cinematically, countless writers and directors have given us their visions of the future, both near and far – some dystopian and rugged, others shiny and overflowing with astonishing new technologies. We’ve learned from past experience not to take their ideas all that seriously (weren’t we supposed to have flying cars by now?), but it’s a lot of fun to entertain the notion of a future world bearing little resemblance to our own. In the horror genre, this future world is almost uniformly presented as a dark, hostile place, filled with malevolent organisms that would sooner rip your head off than engage in a “meaningful dialogue”. To celebrate these films, and to mark the new decade, I’ve listed ten of the best. Let’s just hope our real-world destiny is a lot more hospitable. (more…) READ MORE

Today Warner Bros. revealed the first teaser one sheet for Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Invasion, a quasi-remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Invasion tells the story of a mysterious epidemic that alters the behavior of human beings. When a Washington D.C. psychiatrist (Nicole Kidman) discovers the epidemic’s origins are extraterrestrial, she must fight to protect her son, who may hold the key to stopping the escalating invasion. Here’s a project I’ve been excited about since I first heard about it a few months back. Being produced by Strike Entertainment, the guys who did the Dawn of the Dead remake, this sounds like it could be a really cool movie. James Gunn, even though he did write ‘Scooby Doo,’ has proven himself as a talent in the horror industry- enough so that if I had a few million buckaroos, I’d give it to him to direct his film Slither.
