Style over substance but that’s what’s so good about it. Amazing art direction, costuming, and music. The hypnotic pacing is similar to Fulci and Jodorowsky.
Beyond the Black Rainbow… slow and derivative but I’ll forgive that since it’s an homage “to a film never made” yet slightly resembling the mind-blower drug and sci-fi flicks of the 70′s and 80′s. It is set in 1983 and specifically references Ronald Reagan. At an “institute” for mind health and benign pharmacology, a young girl is held captive and drugged by an egocentric, probably mad doctor, and the power of a strange pyramid. She seems to possess phenomenal powers of the mind and so she is kept drugged almost to the point of being comatose. The founder of the institute, living in seclusion, is also drugged and apparently senile.
The doctor dives into a black pit of goo and emerges in a new level of consciousness… homicidal. Meanwhile the girl escapes and he follows in pursuit. Things cannot end well.
The final visual is stunning… a real knock-out!
