I am surprised by BD’s review on this one. I found the film to be, while not great, perfectly enjoyable. It scores poorly when analyzed exclusively as a horror film, however. The main characters that we care about never seem to be in any real danger, even though other characters are killed by the bus-load.

One problem involves the weapon Craig’s character finds himself with. It seems to be all-powerful, but it is also supposed to be General Issue for the aliens, so why is it so effective at kicking thier butts? It feels like there is no chance for the critters and Craig’s character is a freakin’ Rambo.

The native Americans are cut out of a 50′s western, and very little depth or time are given to them, which is fair since they were not included in the title, right? The other characters don’t get too much attention either, with Craigs being the only one that gets more than a couple of sentences of background. I would have liked to have seen Sam Rockwell used more than he was. He’s got skills.

The critters are nicely done, but between TV’s Falling Skies and Super 8, all these CGI aliens are starting to look the same to me! At least they didn’t attempt to give them hearts of gold (or any redeeming qualities at all) in this one.

Overall, I am rating this flick higher than BD based upon the fact that it successfully blends elements of two of my favorite genres (Western and Sci-fi) but still a bit low for the reasons mentioned above.

This movie was pretty awesome. It was very different, the aliens looked sick as hell. Did page do them you know the guy who design the alien in clover and super 8 and star trek. Looked like it.
The acting was good Paul Dano was amazing and so was rockwell. I loved seeing Dano in a dick role :) Of course wilde was a beauty to look at it.

Craig was sick too, he did a good role outside his bond roles. :) And I love ford alot in it.

But it felt like it was kind of missing something IDK what though. But I did really enjoy it.

WHAT A PILE OF CRAP!!!!!. Dull Script! And even Duller Acting. I’ve looked forward to this movie for nearly 2 years, and I can only say how very Disappointed I am. OK! the FX were pretty good, and so the should be with a budget of $168 million. Ford was totally humourless, and as for Craig.. Shoot him now befor he Kills another bond movie.
If you really want to see an alien invation flick this summer, then, I suggest “Attack the Block” its a much bettermovie.

What the hell were you expecting out of this. It’s cowboys and aliens in a summer action movie and that’s what you got and it was pretty damn good if I might say so.

Pretty cool movie overall. What I liked most was both seeing a cast of some very good character actors (Keith Carradine, Clancy Brown, Paul Dano, etc.) getting the chance to strut their talents & the fact that the movie does not attempt to be the next big sci-fi epic by outdoing previous blockbusters. It quickly gets started, introduces its characters & their dilemma & ends with a bang with a pretty well staged showdown.

The film has its share of gaps & could have used some more time to explain some questions the audience can’t help but ask (why do the aliens need gold….for food? for fuel, for wealth??).

Its far from perfect, but more importantly its far from boring either. Good creature design as well. This fun sci-fi actioner comes recommended.

Thought it was pretty good. Your typical western….. with aliens thrown in there.

“Cowboys & Aliens” is a pretty ok sci-fi/western mash-up – nothing more, nothing less. It’s way better than I expected but it’s also far from what it could have been.

    Pros:
The acting is brilliant due to the exellent performances of Harrison Ford (great as always), Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell and Clancy Brown. It’s packed with awesome CGI / special effects, cool-looking aliens and spaceships, many fantastic action sequences and a whole load of explosions.
Cinematography and editing are great, the soundtrack is highly effective and the desert settings were all very well designed.

    Cons:
The script is a an awful mess: apart from solid character development and an interesting build-up, it’s full to the brim with unanswered questions and plot holes. The pacing is awkward, many scenes are just way too slow, the ending is extremely disappointing and Paul Dano’s character is so incredibly annoying, I constantly had the urge to punch him in the face.

    Overall,
a flawed but quite enjoyable summer flick. In terms of this year’s other alien-invasion movies I’d say it’s better than “Super 8″ and “Battle LA” put together.
