The Saturday Night SurpriseFilm of the /SLASH Filmfestival (Vienna, Sept 2011) – and what a surprise it was!
Holy fuck… “The Raid” is without a single doubt one of THE movies of 2011 – a mindblowing nonstop-hardcore-action-violence-uber-gorefest that left me and everyone else in the audience shocked and breathless.

Outstandingly intense and nerve-wracking from the very first to the very last second, packed with the most incredible action scenes and martial arts choreography sequences, the most brutal and cringe-worthy kills and injuries I’ve ever, EVER seen.
Every single actor delivers a kick-ass performance. The corridors, floors and apartments of the rundown apartment-block look terrific and were brilliantly filmed. The editing is stunning, the script is excellent and the amazingly brooding/chilling score is one of the powerful scores I’ve heard since “High Tension” or “Inside”.

Believe the hype: “The Raid” is an epic and uber-outstanding must-see masterpiece. Can’t hardly wait to see it again!

This is what and how an action movie should be made! No shaky cam fight scenes that try to hide the action or blur what the hell is going on. This is a man’s movie, the violence and action and fight choreography are well done. So do yourself a treat and skip the tennie bopper Hunger games and watch an action movie with violence that a horror fan can appreciate.

this is one of the greatest action movies I’ve ever seen.. words can’t express how amazing this was. I can’t believe someone wouldnt easily give this a 5/5. I want to see it again right away.. see it for yourself and if you don’t, then well, you will be missing out on possibly the best movie of all year. EPIC!

Incedible and amazing!!! I’ve never been a fan of action movies because most of them are so cheesy. And finally one comes along that is not afraid to slap the piss out of you – alot. Bloody Disgusting was right; this movie is like a drug. I just saw it an hour ago…and I want to go back and see it again.

The Raid: Redemption is a brilliant, fight to the death, extravaganza that will not disappoint your expectations. The film has mind-blowing, nonstop action, some tense and suspenseful scenes and doesn’t heavily rely on CGI, which is much appreciated, because all of the over the top fight scenes were raw and effective. This is a mean, tough, smack down, balls to the wall, action flick for men, or anyone looking for badass bliss. Sit back and enjoy the thrilling ride of The Raid!

The story is nothing too complicated and infact it’s pretty simple. It revolves around a SWAT team that gets trapped inside a tenement filled with killers and thugs, all run by a ruthless mobster. The way they execute the premise though, explodes like a bat out of hell and doesn’t hold back. In a way it’s a lot like Battle Royale and deserves all the hype and praise it got.

It’s really hard to say what actor was the most badass here, because all of them gave everything they got into their stunts and performance. It was really in their physically demanding stunts, that were more impressive than anything else and man it was quite a show of open cans of whip ass.

The violence was extreme, but they don’t over do it and chose their methods wisely. The filmmaker made sure that the action was inventive and bar raising, that lets them have a good excuse to show off. They earned their bragging rights of not only being one the best martial arts film ever, but also being the best and most rewarding and enjoyable action film in years. The Raid: Redemption is the one to beat this year.

On top of all the pizazz, the soundtrack is not disappointing either and flows with the great wicked energy. We get Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda collaborating with most of the songs, enough said!

It amazes me, that this is Gareth Evans 3rd film! He has a knack for this genre and is one name I will remember this year. He delivered an epic, cult classic in the making and I can’t wait to see what he is brewing up next, as he is a direction force to be reckoned with.

Overall, this doesn’t need a remake, so I don’t know why they are going through with one. It has so many highlights of action that it raises the bar for the rest of the action films this year. The film holds no barred, has no apologies, true grit, wowza expressed through this viewer’s eyes. You will want to watch it again and again! It’s nothing too deep or meaningful, but it’s a great time spent at the movies and is why we go to the movies in the first place. To escape! A slam-dunk! Recommended!
    4 out of 5 skulls!

I’m a bit confused why this movie is on a horror site for review but it was great none the less. One of my friends faps to this movie. I think he is going to marry it.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved The Raid, but I thought that I’d be sitting here and giving it a raving 10/10 from the moment I saw the jaw-dropping trailer and read all of the really positive reviews which heavily praised its action. I read that the film was quite low on plot and character development and I thought that I’d be OK with that because it’s a martial-arts film, but now I realise that I’m not entirely OK with that and I do need stronger narratives and characters in order to keep me interested. Thankfully, The Raid did actually have a narrative and good characters, as well as dialogue, but it’s this that takes a back seat to put the action first, which is undoubtably some of the greatest action sequences I’ve ever seen.

The way some people were going on, it was as if The Raid was entirely action! The tagline is even ’1 minute of romance, 99 minutes of action’ (or something along the lines of that). But The Raid does actually have a story even if it’s a simple one. I actually like a simple plot, because it means the film remains focussed and you can get really involved in it and I did! I loved the evil owner, who had zero compassion which we saw from the minute we see him, shooting people in a line for reasons we don’t know about. What The Raid lacked in its first 20 minutes or so is a hero! It wasn’t clear who our protaganist was, and it’s hard to feel attatchments to 20-odd policeman who drop like flies (although it is fun to watch). Once our clear hero does emerge the film really hit its stride, and my worries were cleansed.

Our hero is a very likable guy. He has more hair than John McClane and a less he-man attitude than John Rambo! Also, he’s not called John! (But he probably will be in the remake) he’s a really kick-ass man who knows his martial arts as well as Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. He is also not a total charicature as we see how his pregnant wife is on his mind, and we see a complex relationship with his brother. The Raid also features some surprising plot twists which I really liked! But mostly the story is all about survival. Our hero is basically left on his own, and he has to make his way up the building to the king-pin whilst shredding his way through some martial art-loving druggy minions. No, it’s MORE entertaining than it sounds!

Oh yes, the main show here in The Raid is the glourious action. Someone explained that The Expendables is the male equivalent of Sex in the City. He’s wrong, The Raid is! Unless you know an action-loving girl then the majority of females are going to find this boring. My sister walked out after emerging from her sleep! The Raid also far surpasses The Expendables! What was wrong with The Expendables was what is wrong with the majority of action films today, and that is that the camera shakes around way too much, and the quick cuts are so quick that, with so many angles that it’s impossible to tell what is going on. Well, The Raid puts a big fat stop to all of this. The action is shot and edited perfectly. There’s a little shake but no turbulance, and there are very few edits so you know what’s going on!

I’d call The Raid more of a martial arts/kung fu film than an action film, as the guns fall out of play quite early on, leaving a lot of breath-taking fight scenes which may upset some old-school action fans e.g. My Mum, but I couldn’t help but be in awe of the outstanding choreography. It felt almost like a dance film, with the lightening-fast, fluid movements being beautifully captured. My jaw dropped in some scenes, because they were just so intensely filmed that they made me feel out of breath! I really felt transported into the film and I felt every punch and kick, which is unusual is most action films. The Raid also isn’t afraid about leaving little to the imagination wither, we see every gun shot, knife wound and back break. One of the most extraordianry sequences is when during a spectacular fight they jumped out a window, and the camera follows them as they fall out the window, still fighting! It’s very cool.

Michael Bay and other action directors could learn a lot from Welsh-man Gareth Evans (what’s he doing in Indonesia?) It’s some of the best action directing I’ve seen since Kill Bill. I could list a load of superlatives to describe its intensity, but you still need to just experience it for yourself. The Raid is one of the best action films I’ve seen. I’d even controversially say that it’s better than Die Hard! The Raid might’ve not been as deep as I’d have liked it to have been, but hopefully the sequel can surpass that. The remake wouldn’t be a patch on this, unless Gareth did it and a more accomplished writer came to the table. The Raid’s action seuquences blew me away! It’s certainly a film I could watch again and again!

Official Score: 4.5 / 5
