The woods are off limits this December as Lionsgate debuts The Hunters on DVD, Digital Download and On Demand December 27. A terrifying horror film with twists and turns, the film stars Dianna Agron (TV’s “Glee”) and Steven Waddington (Sleepy Hollow). After deciding to spend their last day together in a place that was once off limits, a group of high school friends find themselves hunted in the woods. Out of all the lists I’ve done for the site, this year’s best-of compilation was easily the most difficult to write. When I first starting thinking about this way back in August, I was hard pressed to come up with five films that I liked, let alone ones that were strictly horror. But by the time we crossed over into December and all was said and done, my tally sheet was much harder to sort through but for a different reason: I had to narrow a list of twenty-two films down to ten, with an extra three as honorable mentions. Even after I had run them through my normal list of criteria of what I think makes a film great, my count-down order changed numerous times, and only one question helped me determine the iteration you’re looking at now: if I had the option to march right back into the theatre after watching any of these to see it again, which ones would I watch first? Immediately, the fight between a killer tire and ballerina had a winner, and my decision as to whether or not a powerful film was worth including if it made me depressed for days afterwards became clear. Obviously inspired by Underworld, we caught wind of an interesting looking new horror film entitled Gladiators v Werewolves: Edge of Empire. Rob Green will be directing from his own screenplay. SyFy has released the trailer for Red, their first of many horror-themed fairy tales. Red puts a new spin on a classic fairy tale with Felicia Day (“Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog”, “The Guild”) starring as a modern descendant of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ who brings her fiancé home to meet the family for him to discover that his bride-to-be’s ancestral business is hunting werewolves. When he himself gets bitten by a werewolf, “Red” is forced to try and save the wolfman she loves from her very own family. Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, A History of Violence) and Kavan Smith (“Stargate: Atlantis”, “The 4400″) co-star in the Syfy original from director Sheldon Wilson (Mothman, Screamers: The Hunting) and Syfy scribe Brook Durham (Mammoth, Showdown at Area 51). Dimension Films has acquired Buried Alive from Odd Lot Entertainment’s Dark Lot genre shingle, it was announced today. Dimension Films will distribute the horror film, which was helmed by Robert Kurtzman (Wes Craven’s “Wishmaster”). Kurtzman was also special effects producer on “Buried Alive.” The film stars Tobin Bell (The “Saw” Trilogy), Terence Jay (“Green Street Hooligans”), and newcomer Leah Rachel.
