‘Dredd 2’ Moving Forward But Don’t Get Your Hopes Up Yet

Published

on

The failure of Dredd to make a significant impact at the box office may go down as one of the worst offenses to solid filmmaking in a long time. Admittedly, that statement bears a lot of personal bias – I fucking love that movie – but I don’t think many people who have seen the film would disagree with me.

As a result of the success of the film on home video, many people are left wondering if there is a possibility for a sequel, in some form or another. Whether it be a film or a Netflix/Amazon original series, fans are salivating at the thought of Karl Urban donning the iconic helmet once again to enforce the law upon Mega-City One. To that, I tell you there might be good news on the horizon but that we should not let ourselves get overly excited,

At the 2016 Denver Comic Con, Urban was doing a Q&A when someone asked about the possibility of Dredd 2, to which he replied that a sequel is “…in development“, according to ScienceFiction.com.

What should be made clear, however, is that by “development” they mean that a story is being developed. Once that story is figured out, that’s when they can approach various studios to determine interest. Again, it’s unclear if they want to go for a feature length film or instead head down the original series route, such as Marvel is doing with “Daredevil” and “Luke Cage”.

Urban has spoken plenty about the failure of Dredd upon it’s release but also about how the film succeeded wildly on home video. Now that word of mouth has been created and an audience has been cultivated, a sequel may very well prove more successful than the original release.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
