Director Reveals Hidden Connection Between ‘Oculus’ and ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’

Was it the board or was it… the mirror?

One of the big reasons Ouija: Origin of Evil was so superior to the 2014 film is because it was directed by Mike Flanagan, who has become a force to reckoned with thanks to films like Absentia, Oculus, and Hush. Flanagan is one of the most exciting directors working in horror today, and he just revealed a fun connection between his latest film and earlier work.

Over on Twitter, @FlanaganFilm spilled the beans about an Easter egg placed in the basement of the Zander home in Ouija: Origin of Evil, and though it’s likely nothing more than an homage, it’s nevertheless fun to imagine the implications of it. Remember the possessed Lasser Glass from Oculus? Yup, it shows up in the Ouija prequel.

Flanagan tweeted:

A few people have asked… the answer is yes, that IS the Lasser Glass in the basement in Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Tweeting with our own @TracedThurman, Flanagan even hinted that it was perhaps the mirror that resulted in so much horror being invited into the Zander home, rather than the actual Ouija board. Surely he was just having some fun and not being serious, but again, it’s at least fun to pretend that the Ouija and Oculus franchises exist in the same universe.

So keep your eyes peeled next time you watch Ouija: Origin of Evil!

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
