Ringu kickstarted the J-horror craze when it was remade here in the States. The film featured an antagonist, Sadako, who would haunt anyone who watches a cursed VHS cassette. It’s even one of the inspirations behind our V/H/S. To say I’m a fan is an understatement. Ahead of the third U.S. film’s (Rings) release next Friday, Shudder is giving their users access to the latest Japanese sequel, this time pitting Samara against The Grudge‘s (Ju-On) lesser spook, Kayako.
The streaming service has just now provided us with the opening 5 minutes from Sadako vs. Kayako, which reintroduces the Ringu cassette and gives us the first look at Samara. Personally, I think this movie opens strong, only to digress into a god-awful Grudge sequel with a disastrous finale. In fact, Jon Squires went on a tangent last night, explaining that Sadako vs. Kayako is the most deceptive title since Jason Takes Manhattan. He ain’t lying.
Grotesque director Koji Shiraishi is behind the camera with Mizuki Yamamoto caught in the middle of the two battling horror icons.
After viewing a legendary cursed videotape, Natsumi discovers she has only two days before she will be killed by the demonic entity known as Sadako. The only solution: pitting the demon Sadako against Kayako, an accursed spirit possessing a haunted house where everyone who enters disappears.
Ju-On: The Final, billed as the final Ju-On, opened in Japan June 2015, while Sam Raimi is producing a re-remake here in the States.
