[Trailer] ‘THE NEW MUTANTS’ Turn a Hospital into Full-Blown Haunted House!

[Trailer] ‘THE NEW MUTANTS’ Turn a Hospital into Full-Blown Haunted House!

Filming wrapped this past September on director Josh Boone’s (The Fault in Our Stars) The New Mutants, a Marvel Comics property that Boone has promised will be a “full-fledged horror movie.” He wasn’t exaggerating. Just take a look at this trailer that pegs it as a haunted house horror movie that’s been overrun by out-of-control mutants!

The cast includes Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot, a mutant with the ability to absorb and channel solar power; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, the Native American telepath also known as “Mirage”; Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on; Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, who uses teleportation; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; and Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane, who can turn into a wolf.

Boone directed from a script he co-wrote with Knate Lee about teenage superheroes-mutants being held against their will.

New Mutants has been set for an April 13, 2018, opening.

hmmm…much to my surprise i’m not completely in love with this trailer/the footage. i’ve been very excited for this film since it was first announced but this particular trailer makes it seem more like a HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (remake) type of movie rather than it being a new X-MEN/mutants movie. i don’t hate what i’m seeing but i just thought it was going to be a bit more X-MEN-ish. maybe it’s just this first trailer.

FOX has never liked the X-Men comics so their only idea of how to make better X-Men movies is to take them as far away from the source material as possible and then brag about how bold and original they’re being.

      • Khy

They’ve been running these films for 17 years now- I think it’s working.

If you want the comic then read it.

      • ExoMummy

I respectfully disagree. They had some duds, but for the most part, Fox films capture the spirit of the comics…. and this is from a LONG time reader and fan. Logan and Deadpool captured the tone of their respective characters perfectly. I always felt Fox get’s an unfair wrap.

Besides, as I’ve mentioned above, they are really channeling specific stories from New Mutants early runs and going with the horror tone of several of the old stories that the original creators made. Those stories are the iconic New Mutants stories, the ones that put them on the map. This horror flavor is not entirely out of character.

    • Khy

I think that’s the point J. This shouldn’t feel like an X-Men movie because it’s a completely different genre.

Them going the traditional “kids save the day route” would’ve been a mistake

  • Jonathan Larsson

Certainly a new take for a superhero movie. I am intrigued of what they can do with the concept, as the doctor in this trailer describes it perfectly when comparing the children to young rattlesnakes. It’s like giving the X-Men more of a Scanners feel, which I would love to see.

I hope it has a bit of the same clever storytelling as Logan though, as well some of the grittiness. It would be a shame if played out like your average horror movie considering the source material.

    • zombie84_41

Yeah I feel slightly upset with that but if its a horror movie with mutants using their powers and wrecking shit It’ll be dope.

  • Khy

I award it an Oscar based on this trailer alone!

Can I cry? My two loves are now one. Say what you will but Fox are killing it with their X-Films. Totally taking the franchise and genre to new heights!

    • zombie84_41

I agree with you 400% I’m sick of everyone bitchin and moaning about the last few films we’ve got. It all started with Deadpool and I’m so grateful that movie came out and did amazing because it open the eyes of the studios and they sure hey we can do darker shit now and then Logan comes along and nails it, so lets hope New Mutants keeps the R trend going.

      • Khy

        Preach!

        • zombie84_41

LOL. Sorry when I go on rants I go on rants LOL.

I love the X-Men films but I’ve never read the comics, so I have to ask, were the New Mutants comics always of this horror-like in nature? The trailer really baffled me because it’s not what I was expecting at all. I’m still excited for it though. I hadn’t read too many updates on it, so I had no idea it was going to look like a horror movie.

    • Jonathan Larsson

The original New Mutants is sort of to the X-men what Teen Titans is to Justice League.

However, using the characters from the group is actually pretty clever with this set up; Mirage has the ability to create illusions of your worst fears, Magik sometimes has a demonic, split personality and Wolvesbane is a religious introvert who can transform into a werewolf.
I’d say the one character missing in this setup is Legion, who is straight up crazy.

    • Khy

There was a story arc called the Demon Bear saga- that’s what this one is based on. That was very horror-esque.

  • ExoMummy

This looks great. I’ve been reading New Mutants for awhile and I think this looks very cool. Maisie Williams and Anna Taylor Joy look and feel exactly like Rahyne and Magick. They were perfectly casted. The whole trailer echoes the eeriness and horror that the old Demon Bear and Legion storylines had. Claremont and Sienkiewicz’s run on the series added a nice horror flavor to the genre. I always felt New Mutants was darker in tone anyway, especially those early runs, because the members had such dark origins and terrible things happened to them and their families. Seriously can’t wait.

    • zombie84_41

I hope they make it R this movie too no more pussy PG-13 X-men films.

      • ExoMummy

I hope so to. Logan and Deadpool really benefitted from that. And I saw your post on Legion… I agree, it’s fantastic. He actually first appeared in New Mutants.

Oh cool. Yeah I’m not to familiar with New Mutants I’ve heard of the characters but don’t no much bout the story line. I really loved Legion though. Can’t wait for season 2.

          • ExoMummy

I loved Legion too. I can’t wait for the next season as well! Dan Stevens is a fantastic actor in that series

          • zombie84_41

he is a great actor in general you see him in that the movie The Guest ? Great ass movie.

          • ExoMummy

The Guest was fantastic. I actually had no idea who Stevens was until I saw that. I watched it because I had heard it was made by the guys who did some of the films in VHS, but I was blown away. Damn great film

          • zombie84_41

truly was awesome. those directors are so dope

  • Grimphantom

I’m liking the atmosphere, feels like Dream Warriors with Mutants.

    • zombie84_41

Right I got a silent hill vibe too.

  • I like that they went full on horror with this. Definitely a new direction for this series. I wonder if the majority of the general audience even knows that these new properties (New Mutants, Legion, Gifted) are related to the X-Men.

    • zombie84_41

Most. But not all. Is gifted good ? It looks good but the PG rating is kind of off putting. Legion is fucking fantastic.

      • J Jett

THE GIFTED is very very good! i was surprised at how solid the first 2 eps were.

        • zombie84_41

I’ll have to watch it then 🙂

      • IBelievePhonies

Gifted is really good for the limitations given as for content compared to crap Inhumans from Disney/Marvel Universe Gifted opened the series beautifully and so continues to keep my interest. Let’s hope we Fox finally gives us some X-Men crossovers such as Legion such Charles Xavier making a appearance as David’s father.

I doubt Deadpool will ever make appearance on Legion as part of X-Force connection or Vice Versa David appearing in X-Force movie. Fox can do so much right at the moment with Fox/MCU like Disney did with MCU/Netflix series so far except for Defenders and Iron Fist. If only we could just get Disney/Sony/Fox MCU to unite would be epic.

        • zombie84_41

Sweet. Well I was hearing the director/creator of Legion really wanted Xavier to be in it. So maybe one day we’ll get to see that. I have no intentions to ever watch Inhumans it looks so shitty. I even gave up on agent of shield cus that shit was really cheesy too. Maybe one day we can get all of them together also I would love to see that. I dont’ think my mind would be able to handle such epicness.

Looks to have some great potential! I’m not as big a fan of ‘X Men’ as I am Horror, but I definitely like them. That’s why when they started rating the last couple of films rated R I was ecstatic. People, sorry ‘Mutants’ that have ‘abilities’ to rip people apart and almost all of their films have no bloodshed! Now since ‘Deadpool’ & ‘Logan’ came along with an R rating I’ve heard nothing but great things, especially from other Horror fans. I think Marvel has more in common with Horror than they like to let on. Now we got ‘New Mutants’ a “full fledged Horror movie”, the new ‘Venom’ looks to be rated R and Horror-esque, and the new ‘Hellboy’ is going dark with an R rating in the annals of Horror as well. Off to a good start. This ‘New Mutants’ again looks good so here’s to hoping it is!

    • zombie84_41

Here’s hoping New Mutants be amazing and R too. They just need to keep making marvel movies R. Well the x-men ones at least. Spiderman, capt america, thor shit like that doesn’t need to be R at all PG-13 is perfectly fine, but with X-men shit should be R always.

      • Necro

Yeah ‘Spider-man’ and all them I can accept in a PG-13 film, but ‘X Men’ just belongs in the R category. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to see ‘Spider-man’ and the others in rated R as well.

        • zombie84_41

Lol an R rated spider man would be awesome. Peter parker dropping F bombs. LOL “Yo I’m spiderman motherfuckers.”

  • I just hope this is not a misleading trailer. Cannot wait

  • zombie84_41

This movie looks fuckin insane. I hope it be R, I hope it be scary, and intense. Also I get huge Legion vibes on this too. And if none of you have yet to watch that show take some time out of your day and sit down and watch it. But beware you won’t be the same person you were when you went into it. Surly is a twisting mind fucking show.

  • Mr. Dry

One one hand, this looks nothing like the New Mutants storyline from the comics, neither its aesthetic and that’s kinda annoying because NM’s comics are great. On the other hand, it’s great seeing that they took some risks, and as a horror fan AND a Marvel films fan I have to admit this seems pretty interesting.

My bet is that the whole hospital is some kind of mind prison created by some mutant.

  • Jada Maes

Between this and Legion, I hope we finally start getting the X-Universe’s more disturbing mutants: Warlock, Mojo, the Stepford Cuckoos, Xorn, Spiral… Just please don’t ruin this like you did with LITERALLY EVERY X-FLICK EXCEPT X2, OK FOX?!
