Synopsis for Eli Roth’s ‘The House With a Clock in Its Walls’

Eli Roth

In theaters September 21, 2018, Universal Pictures shared with us the official synopsis for The House With a Clock in Its Walls, which is to be directed by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Green Inferno).

The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town’s sleepy façade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches when Lewis accidentally awakens the dead.

In the tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places, Jack Black and two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett star in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, from Amblin Entertainment.

Also starring are Kyle MacLachlan, Colleen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams, and Sunny Suljic.

Based on the beloved children’s classic written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is directed by master frightener Eli Roth and written by Eric Kripke (creator of TV’s “Supernatural”). Co-starring Kyle MacLachlan, Colleen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams and Sunny Suljic, it is produced by Mythology Entertainment’s Brad Fischer (Shutter Island) and James Vanderbilt (Zodiac), as well as Kripke.

Well Green Inferno was one of the worst films i have ever seen and I’ve Hulk Hogan and Shannon Tweed’s assault on skull mountain.

    • Blood Boil

      Agreed

    • The_Gentleman

      It was awful.

Have you seen Knock Knock? Painful

When did Hollywood start letting Eli Roth make movies with actual A-List actors? I’m not going to knock Eli Roth like so many do because God help me I liked Cabin Fever, the first Hostel movie, and even The Green Inferno.
Seriously how the fuck was Eli able to go from a disgusting homage to Cannibal Holocaust to mainstream movies like a Death Wish remake starring Bruce Willis and now a movie starring Oscar winning actress, Cate Blanchett? This is insane!

    • diapers

Agreed, totally insane. Reminds me of the jump Peter Jackson made.

It happened a long time ago ……I guess you missed Knock Knock ?
Hollywood is all for pulling genre directors into bigger Hollywood movies with names in them .
The latest include Adam Wingard and Michael Dougherty .

      • Bart Crowe

I forgot about Knock Knock w/ Keanu Reeves. With Wingard, You’re Next and The Guest are critically praised and beloved so it makes sense. Plus The Guest had Dan Stevens who has become quite the huge star himself after Downton Abbey.
Michael Dougherty cut his teeth screenwriting huge movies like X-Men 2 and Superman Returns so not exactly cult classics.
On the other hand critics hate Eli Roth’s movies and think he only got where he is because he is friends with people like Quentin Tarantino.

        • Simon Allen

I don’t hate Roth as a Director …..sometimes his subject matter isn’t great but at least he has a bit of style about him (i like the plane crash in Green Inferno ) and Knock Knock was pretty awful but it did look pretty good .
Remember Wingard fell flat on his face with the terrible Blair Witch so maybe everybody deserves a chance ?
I’d prefer to see a movie directed by someone with an interesting reputation than by some terrible hack like McG or his like .

Roth as a director was really good when he first started with Cabin Fever and the Hostel movies. However, it seems that his ideas are starting to fade away and his writing is not as good as they used to. His directing style, however, has gotten somewhat better. But overall, he is not a bad director.

Hopefully we’ll see something in his upcoming Death Wish and Clock Wall movies.

Hey I actually like Eli Roth and even liked The Green Inferno. I know I am in the minority. Eli made a loving tribute to movies like Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox and it showed. Those movies are pure exploitation and revel in shock value which is what The Green Inferno captured. Just can’t get over the fact that the Bear Jew himself is directing a movie starring Cate freakin’ Blanchett. Got to admit that is kinda crazy.

You’re totally right Hollywood should give genre directors a chance instead of relying on shit ones like McG or even Ron Howard.

          • Simon Allen

I think Cate Blanchett is really having some fun with her career at the moment …she seems to be having a ball in the new Thor Movie and she follows that up with Oceans Eight with Sandra Bullock . I think shes great and it’s gonna be cool to see her in this kind of stuff after a long stretch of “worthy” but great roles .
I think more actresses could do with taking a leaf out of her book and have some fun now and then .

        • MrX13

Knock Knock was an ok movie but could have been a lot better. Reeves was good as were the actresses but it was the writing that was pretty bad

  • diapers

WOW, the plot of this story has crossed my mind ever since reading it as a kiddo in the freakin dark ages. If the tone and style of the story are preserved, this would be a bit of a departure for Roth. I look forward to it. Meanwhile, queue the herd of anti Eli Roth dittoheads already lined up to state how much of a hack Eli Roth is. 3..2..1..

  • The_Gentleman

I don’t like Roth that much but I hope this is good. It sounds fantastic. Great cast. Hope he doesn’t fuck it up. Oh and just as a reminder, Blair Witch is fucking awesome. Respect, yo!

  • ShadowInc

It amazes me that Roth keeps getting work with the amount of mediocrity he turns out.

    ????????

  • MrX13

I’m surprise that his wife, Lorenza Izzo, isn’t in this movie. I know he likes to put her as his main actress in his movies. Lately, his movies have been…eh ok, so no rush to excitedly see this movie. Maybe a trailer could change my mind

    • Galaxy_Scribe

Because she can’t act her way out of a paper bag

      • MrX13

        No she can’t

    • Simon Allen

I’m glad she’s not in it because she aint no Meryl Streep .

      • J Jett

        she’s a horrible actress indeed.

      • MrX13

        Nope

  • Galaxy_Scribe

So glad his wife isn’t in this. She’s pretty but has the acting talent of wallpaper.

    • Simon Allen

      True Story !

    • J Jett

      so true!

  • J Jett

this sounds like it could be awesome! fingers crossed.

  • Alexis M

    she’s a horrible actress indeed.

    • J Jett

at first i thought you were referring to Cate Blanchett!! then i realized who you were referring to. LOL.

  • Christian

He’s directed a lot of terrible garbage in the past so hopefully this is a sign of him finally moving on from the torture horror-porn phase of his life.

  • Johnny

    Jack Black??? Oh goody…
