David Fincher Wants There to Be a Reason for a ‘World War Z’ Sequel

Published

The great David Fincher has been attached to direct a follow-up to Paramount’s World War Z for over a year now. While it’s been pretty quiet around that front, it’s always been pegged to begin filming as early as January of 2018, which is still a few month away. With his ridiculously good Netflix series “MINDHUNTER” now streaming, he’s focusing on several projects, one of which is hopefully World War Z 2. It’s a huge win for us genre fans to have Fincher attached, especially because he isn’t doing it “just because”. Here’s what he had to say about their attitude towards the hotly anticipated zombie sequel.

“I worked on a show for HBO that didn’t see the light of day and at the same time was doing [Mindhunter], and then did [Mindhunter], and I’ve been working for about a year now with Dennis Kelly on World War Z,” he told Collider.

“We’re hoping to get a piece of material that’s a reason to make a movie not an excuse to make a movie.”

As previously reported, Brad Pitt will once again star as former U.N. investigator Gerry Lane, who heads on a worldwide search to find the source of the infection and, with luck, a way to halt its spread.

World War Z would reteam Fincher with Pitt, who collaborated on Se7en and Fight Club. The music video director broke into filmmaking with the 1993 Alien3, and went on to direct Panic Room, Zodiac, The Social Network and Gone Girl.
