It was announced earlier this year that Emperor Motion Picture had restored and revived Ichi the Killer (2001), one of the most challenging, violent and iconic films to emerge from Japanese auteur Takashi Miike. Well Go USA Entertainment acquired North American rights for the all-new 4K restoration that’s also brand new director’s cut.
Well Go just sent us the poster and some super hi-res images to show just how stunning the new transfer looks. Holy shit. Those in New York are lucky as fuck, with Ichi having a special one-week engagement at the Metrograph beginning tomorrow!
In the film, as sadomasochistic yakuza enforcer Kakihara searches for his missing boss he comes across Ichi, a repressed and psychotic killer who may be able to inflict levels of pain that Kakihara has only dreamed of.
The materials were in very poor condition as it was shot in Beta and only later converted to 35mm, hence the new edit which is said to be even gorier.
It will soon roll out to specialty theaters across North America over the next several months in full 4K glory.
