Mike Flanagan’s ‘Before I Wake’ Finally Getting Release On U.S. Netflix!

Filmed way back in 2013 and originally intended for release in 2015… and then 2016… and then maybe 2017?… Gerald’s Game director Mike Flanagan’s Before I Wake (read our review) has been met with delay after delay after delay, to the point that we were starting to wonder if we’d *ever* be able to watch the film here in the States.

The good news? We’ve just learned today that Before I Wake, which Flanagan made before recent hits Ouija: Origin of Evil and Gerald’s Game, will hit US Netflix on January 5!

Our own Daniel Kurland wrote in his review last year that Before I Wake is “a haunted fairytale from a growing master.” So you’ll want to give this one your time.

In Before I Wake

Jessie and Mark, recovering from the death of their young son Sean, decide to take in 8-year-old Cody as a foster child. Cody seems sweet, loving and bright in every way, except that he is afraid to sleep. They soon discover why: Cody’s dreams manifest in reality as he sleeps. In Jessie’s grief, she tries to use Cody’s supernatural abilities to reconnect with her dead son. Soon she discovers that Cody’s nightmares manifest as well, as they experience both the intense wonder – and intense terror – that only a child’s imagination could conjure. To save their new family, Jessie and Mark must uncover the truth behind Cody’s nightmares.

Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Dash Mihok, Annabeth Gish and Jacob Tremblay star.

I really liked Before I wake, the boy’s performance is amazing and the pace of the film is pretty suspenseful. But I said it before, it’s more of a drama-fantasy film than horror, I almost cried near the end. Glad to see it finally in the U.S.

awesome movie! i’ve watched the film several times and i definitely cry or at the very least tear up big time at the end of the film. LOL.

Good, I LOVED his movie so much.

    Think Krampus, Or Gremlins

It’s like a scary kids movie that’s done really well.

    Has some genuinely creepy moments

    • Simon Allen

Um ….I didn’t really see the funny side here ?

    • J Jett

      i agree, great movie!

Well seeing the Pussy-13 rating at the end didn’t exactly make me smile, but Flanagan has a directorial style that I certainly like and appreciate as a Horror fan. For me personally all the years I had to sit and (im)patiently wait for ‘Gerald’s Game’ to finally get made, and get made fantastically, Flanagan definitely earned my respect with that film alone! Even if that was his one and only film it would be enough for me to sit and watch this film, but every film he has made to date I liked so hopefully that trend continues with this. And finally, even if I end up hating this film with every fiber of my being (very doubtful), I still think Flanagan has a tremendous career ahead of him, and I TRULY hope he chooses to remain in the Horror genre cuz I personally think we’re lucky to have a director of his talents in our fantastic genre!

Cool J I’ll let you know what I think once I’ve seen it.

Pussy-13? Jesus Christ, are you 14-years-old?

  • Simon Allen

It’s a great little movie …..infinitely better that his offering of late (Geralds Game did not impress me at all ) .
Think of the kind of stuff Del Toro used to do.
The cast is great and guess what …..you really care what happens .

Awesome. I really expected nothing less from him. Gerald’s Game is an adaption that I feel is inferior to his story-telling….but as an adaption, it was well made (in my opinion).

      • Simon Allen

I’m sure you will enjoy this . 🙂

It had potential and started well enough, but I think it went off the rails. It also has to be one of the most poorly edited movies I’ve seen in a long time. The sense of place and time got less clear as it went along.

Plus, I found it weird that it wasn’t clear what happened to the people taken by the Canker Man, and when you realize they’re all dead, no one seems to care or mention it. Still, the film’s resolution was quite touching.

For what it’s worth, even a disappointing Mike Flanagan film is better than what most other horror directors can do.

            DUDE !!!!
you really need to put spoiler alert before all this …..shit !
Not many people have seen it .

          • MODOK

You think? Even for the general stuff at the beginning?

I don’t want to ruin it for anyone, so I expanded the spoiler tag.

          • Simon Allen

            Cool .

Sorry ..I don’t know how it turned into a triple assault LOL ,
I deleted the other two now .

Simon, i LOVE this movie! i’ve watched it several times. it’s my favorite film from Mike Flanagan.

      • Simon Allen

Close call between this and Hush …..they are such polar opposites in theme and execution though .

        • J Jett

i liked HUSH up until the killer takes the mask off. IMO he completely loses pretty much all his scariness/impact after that but i can understand why/respect why people like that movie. 🙂

  • BreeBennett

It’s a beautiful movie, something like a dark fairy tale. It was released in Brazil in theaters and it was on Netflix (but now not anymore).

  • tbaio

Mike Flanagan is awesome. I look forward to anything he makes…..this included.

  • James

Unfortunately this has been his weakest film so far. Hard to complain though since he’s been excellent for the most part.

    • The chicken man

This was going to be my exact comment. Couldn’t agree more!

  • Great news to hear about Mike Flangan’s buddies at Netflix aiding him in rescuing BEFORE I WAKE for an exclusive Netflix release(/airing),for at least everyone will be able to see it.

  • J Jett

this movie is excellent. i love this movie.

  • Boydon

the movie is one of the worst, if not thee worst horror movie i’ve seen in a very long time. countless delays speak volumes. i don’t know what sort of heavenly shit the commenters here are on, but i’d like some if it please.
