Mackenzie Davis Lands Role of New Franchise Heroine In Next ‘Terminator’!

Oh. My. God. This is one way to celebrate Women’s Day…

While Arnold Schwarzenegger may be the face behind James Cameron‘s The Terminator franchise, which has spawned several sequels and a television series, the real star is Sarah Connor, who gives birth to mankind’s savior. Several women have donned the role, but none as great as Linda Hamilton, who stole the show in Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Thankfully, Hamilton will be returning to the role in Cameron’s next Terminator, which has enlisted Deadpool‘s Tim Miller to direct. The new film will ignore most of the sequels and instead continue the story following the events in Judgment Day.  When Hamilton was confirmed to star, it was revealed that it would be alongside a new strong female character.

“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story,” Cameron noted last year. “We will fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”

We’ve been waiting on pins and needles to see who this new heroine would be, and now we have an answer. Variety announced this afternoon that Mackenzie Davis is in negotiations to join the cast as “the face of the rebooted franchise”!

Davis is a favorite of Bloody Disgusting. Best known for her role as computer hacker Cameron Howe on AMC’s “Halt and Catch Fire” and Yorkie in “Black Mirror’s” Golden Globe-winning “San Junipero” episode, Davis has also had major roles in the films That Awkward Moment and The Martian. She also most recently appeared in Blade Runner 2049, another reboot of a sci-fi classic, and can be seen next opposite Charlize Theron in Jason Reitman’s Tully and in the Amblin thriller The TurningShe also blew our minds in Sophie Takal’s Always Shine. This is phenomenal casting news!

Update: THR adds that there’s another bit of major casting news on the horizon and that while Davis is the face of the franchise, she’s not who will specifically be taking the baton from Hamilton. Watch this spot.

The Terminator will return on July 26, 2019.

‘Ready or Not’: Radio Silence Filmmakers Tease the “Absolute Banger” of a Sequel That’s Taking Shape

It was first reported a couple weeks ago that Ready or Not 2 is now in development, with Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan, Insidious: The Last Key, Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions) in talks to direct the sequel to the 2019 box office hit. Additionally, we had learned that Samara Weaving would be returning to star.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with Ready or Not directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin in the wake of those reports, and we’ve now got an update straight from the source.

“It’s getting figured out. That’s what we’ll say: Ready or Not 2 is getting figured out,” Gillett tells EW, confirming last month’s report. “What we can say is that there is a script that is an absolute fucking banger of a sequel. And however it gets made, and in whatever capacity we are helping get it made, we are so excited that it’s happening.”

“I don’t think we knew after making [Ready or Not] that there would be so much story left to tell,” Gillett continues. “We’re so proud of what that first movie is, we’re so proud of what the sequel is. We’re just really excited, and fingers crossed that it gets made.” Bettinelli-Olpin adds, “And with Searchlight and Samara, they’re not gonna let it down.”

The first film introduced a mythology wherein the wealthy Le Domas family has made a deal with the devil, one that requires them to take part in bizarre – and deadly – wedding night traditions. There’s much that can be done with the premise going forward, even if the first movie ended with Weaving’s Grace massacring the family and burning down their estate.

Wikipedia reminds, “The sole survivor of the night, Grace walks out of the burning manor just as the police arrive. Upon asking her what happened, she simply replies: in-laws.”
