Last month, May 18th to be exact, marked the release of Toho and Polygon’s Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle over in Japan, the sequel to last year’s very first animated film in the Toho Godzilla franchise, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. According to THR, we won’t have to wait much longer to check it out here in the States!

The site notes this week, “Netflix is set to premiere the second installment of its Godzilla anime trilogy later this week.”

In City on the Edge of Battle, directed by Kobun Shizuno & Hiroyuki Seshita…

“Rising from the depths of the planet is a new breed of monster, dubbed “Godzilla Earth.” Evolving for 20,000 years, the creature stands 300 meters high, weighs over 100,000 tons and wields such overwhelmingly destructive power that Haruo and company have no choice but to run for their lives. Coming to Haruo’s rescue, however, is Miana, a member of an aboriginal tribe called the Houtua. They are the first humanoid people the returnees have encountered. Could they descend from humans?

“Our tribal god was destroyed by Godzilla. All that we have left are these eggs. Anyone who has tried to fight or resist him has been drowned in fire,” the tribespeople say to Haruo, who responds with: “This is our last hope of recovering our home.” Meanwhile, Bilusaludo commander, Galu-gu is elated to discover that the Houtua tribe’s arrowheads are made of a nanometal or a self-sustaining metal. It had been developed in the 21st century as an “anti-Godzilla” killer weapon deployed at their decisive battle fought at the foot of Mt. Fuji, but had been destroyed before it could be activated in the form of a “Mecha-Godzilla.” The nanometal was its base substance, and proof that the manufacturing plant can still be used.”

The third and final installment in the series is set to arrive in Japan in November 2018.

Entertainment Weekly detailed the upcoming movie’s prequel storyline, “Lupita Nyong’o stars as Sam, a woman who’s on a day trip to New York City when the monsters arrive.

“As everything quickly goes to hell, she’s thrown together with a man named Eric (Joseph Quinn). With some reluctance, the pair agree to navigate and survive the city together.”

The spinoff is based on an original idea by John Krasinski and Michael Sarnoski, and it was written by Sarnoski. Meanwhile, it’s expected that the Abbott family storyline will become a trilogy with Krasinski recently teasing that he has ideas for the third film in the main series.

John Krasinski will produce alongside Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller via Platinum Dunes. A Quiet Place Part II opened to $57 million at the domestic box office in May 2021 and has earned $297 million worldwide, making it easy to see why this franchise is expanding.
