Published

on

Bloody-Disgusting has scored another exclusive Top 10 list, this time from Jeff Martin, singer of Lo-Pan. I have to say, this band is awesome! I’m not just saying that because they’re obsessed with Big Trouble In Little China (one of my all time favorite films), but because they have a great musical attitude and sound fantastic. Check after the jump for the exclusive list as well as some upcoming tour dates.

Top 10 Horror Films
by Jeff Martin singer for Lo-Pan

1. Nightmare on Elm Street 1(original) – Dude with a grudge haunts the dreams of the children of the people that killed him.The scene where Freddy is just standing on the corner watching the window haunted my dreams for my entire childhood and ensured I would never look out of a window at night.

2. Hostel – young people traveling through eastern Europe are taken and auctioned off to rich men to indulge their murderous fantasies. This movie is just twisted all the way around.  Highly entertaining. Eli Roth and I would get along very well, I suspect.
3. Let the Right One In (original)  – young vampire of indeterminate age and sexuality meets and befriends young man, becomes his protector. This movie is amazing to me. The way it is shot, it merely eludes to killing and shows the aftermath.  The original has a very eerie feeling throughout.

4. Funny Games (remake) –  Two young psychos terrorize and ultimately brutalize unsuspecting WASP families. While I enjoy both the original and the shot-for-shot remake of this one, the remake showcases Michael Pitt as the lead psycho, Paul. There has never been a more perfect role for an actor than this.  Crazy movie and amazing performance.
5. Poltergeist – suburban family is haunted by the ghosts of the people their housing development is built on. I hated watching this movie when I was a kid.  But I couldn’t stop.  The source of so many childhood fears. Amazing movie.
Salvador – El Salvador
6. The Strangers – 3 homicidal crazies in masks stalk and kill a young married couple just because. This movie was fun to watch, suspenseful throughout and absolutely unflinchingly brutal.  Random killing and no explanation or reveal. what’s not to like?
7. Jacob’s Ladder – a veteran returns home from war and things get crazy. This movie is just so good.  Scary as hell.  Love it.
8. Carrie – a girl is bullied at school and at home and uses her telekinetic powers to make them all pay, a true classic.  Brilliantly acted and has a creepy feeling all the way through.
9. Event Horizon – a space crew is sent to ascertain the status of a missing ship. This movie scared the hell out of me.  When they locate the video of the missing crew. That is as twisted and scary as it gets.
10. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) – insane family terrorizes young people.  Is there a reason not to love this movie?

“He Walks By Night” – Listen to a Brand New John Carpenter Song NOW!

John Carpenter music

It’s a new day, and you’ve got new John Carpenter to listen to. John Carpenter, Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter have released the new track He Walks By Night this morning, the second single off their upcoming album Lost Themes IV: Noir, out May 3 on Sacred Bones Records.

Lost Themes IV: Noir is the latest installment in a series that sees Carpenter releasing new music for John Carpenter movies that don’t actually exist. The first Lost Themes was released in 2015, followed by Lost Themes II in 2016 and Lost Themes III: Alive After Death in 2021.

Sacred Bones previews, “It’s been a decade since John Carpenter recorded the material that would become Lost Themes, his debut album of non-film music and the opening salvo in one of Hollywood’s great second acts. Those vibrant, synth-driven songs, made in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, kickstarted a musical renaissance for the pioneering composer and director. With Lost Themes IV: Noir, they’ve struck gold again, this time mining the rich history of the film noir genre for inspiration.

“Since the first Lost Themes, John has referred to these compositions as “soundtracks for the movies in your mind.” On the fourth installment in the series, those movies are noirs. Like the film genre they were influenced by, what makes these songs “noirish” is sometimes slippery and hard to define, and not merely reducible to a collection of tropes. The scores for the great American noir pictures were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies work off a sturdy synth-and-guitar backbone.

“The trio’s free-flowing chemistry means Lost Themes IV: Noir runs like a well-oiled machine—the 1951 Jaguar XK120 Roadster from Kiss Me Deadly, perhaps, or the 1958 Plymouth Fury from John’s own Christine. It’s a chemistry that’s helped power one of the most productive stretches of John’s creative life, and Noir proves that it’s nowhere near done yielding brilliant results.”

You can pre-save Lost Themes IV: Noir right now! And listen to the new track below…
