Coming out of a nice and relaxing weekend, we’ve got three quick news bits to jump start your week. Beyond the break you’ll find the latest Halloween II TV Spot from Dimension Films entitled “Fight”, you can take a look at some behind-the-scenes images from Robert Rodriguez’s now-filming Machete, and then take a gander at an interesting article where Jackie Earle Haley talks about Freddy’s “Scottish” accent. Talk about ’em below.
FREDDY EQUIPT WITH A SCOTTISH ACCENT?

Updated: B D reader Brad writes in, “Brad Fuller tweeted me back on the scottish accent and said “that is ridiculous”. Just fyi.”

BD reader ‘Max Power’ (isn’t that Homer Simpson’s new name in that one episode?) just hit us up with the following link to the Daily Mail who has been known for breaking bullsh*t stories and attempting to be TMZ-like. The article focuses on a supposed interview with Haley, who plays the new Freddy Krueger in the forthcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, where he talks about how he turned Freddy “scottish”.

I thought it would be really interesting to give Freddy a Scottish accent and I think it works. It’s a scary process trying to step into the shoes of Robert Englund,” he tells the site. “It was important to keep the qualities that fans are familiar with – such as the sweater, the hat and the glove – but yet, also to try to find a freshness and a newness to this re-envisioning.

The site also reports that Producers of the new film are playing down the claims of a Scots Freddy, although they give no source for the quotes and or statements. Good reporting fellas. Take this news for what it’s worth. Elm Street returns to theaters on April 30, 2010.

TACOS ON SET OF MACHETE

BD reader ‘Dania’ hit us up with the following link to dig on a few dozen behind-the-scenes photos from the now-filming Machete, which is behind camera in Austin, Texas with Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey all starring.

The feature version of the trailer finds Machete (Trejo) a renegade former Mexican Federale, roaming the streets of Texas after a shakedown from drug lord Torrez (Seagal). Reluctantly, Machete takes an offer from spin doctor Benz (Fahey) to assassinate McLaughlin (De Niro) a corrupt Senator. Double crossed and on the run Machete braves the odds with the help of Luz (Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Marin) his “holy” brother, and April (Lohan) a socialite with a penchant for guns. All while being tracked by Sartana (Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger.

NEW FRINGE CASTING

Theresa Russell (Spider-Man 3, The Believer, Wild Things) has booked a recurring role on Fox’s “Fringe,” which is produced by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Cloverfield). In the skein, she will play a long-lost love from Walter Bishop’s past.

The show is a drama centered around a female FBI agent who is forced to work with an institutionalized scientists in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena.

NEW HALLOWEEN II TV SPOT “FIGHT”

‘Abigail’ on Track for a Better Opening Weekend Than Universal’s Previous Two Vampire Attempts

Published

on

In the wake of Leigh Whannell’s Invisible Man back in 2020, Universal has been struggling to achieve further box office success with their Universal Monsters brand. Even in the early days of the pandemic, Invisible Man scared up $144 million at the worldwide box office, while last year’s Universal Monsters: Dracula movies The Last Voyage of the Demeter and Renfield didn’t even approach that number when you COMBINE their individual box office hauls.

The horror-comedy Renfield came along first in April 2023, ending its run with just $26 million. The period piece Last Voyage of the Demeter ended its own run with a mere $21 million.

But Universal is trying again with their ballerina vampire movie Abigail this weekend, the latest bloodbath directed by the filmmakers known as Radio Silence (Ready or Not, Scream).

Unlike Demeter and Renfield, the early reviews for Abigail are incredibly strong, with our own Meagan Navarro calling the film “savagely inventive in terms of its vampiric gore,” ultimately “offering a thrill ride with sharp, pointy teeth.” Read her full review here.

That early buzz – coupled with some excellent trailers – should drive Abigail to moderate box office success, the film already scaring up $1 million in Thursday previews last night. Variety notes that Abigail is currently on track to enjoy a $12 million – $15 million opening weekend, which would smash Renfield ($8 million) and Demeter’s ($6 million) opening weekends.

Working to Abigail‘s advantage is the film’s reported $28 million production budget, making it a more affordable box office bet for Universal than the two aforementioned movies.

Stay tuned for more box office reporting in the coming days.

In Abigail, “After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.”
