I love both Vincenzo Natali’s Cube and Splice, which is why I’ve been debating covering his forthcoming adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s thriller High Rise. The premise doesn’t sound horror at all, but when you tap writer/director Richard Stanley to pen the project, you’re getting yourself into all kinds of weird (Cronenberg weird). Bleeding cool reports that the man behind both Hardware and Dust Devil is working with Natali on an adaptation of the book that tells the unnerving tale of life in a modern tower block running out of control. Within the concealing walls of an elegant 40-story tower block, the affluent tenants are hell-bent on an orgy of destruction. Cocktail parties degenerate into marauding attacks on ‘enemy’ floors and the once-luxurious amenities become an arena for technological mayhem! Human society slips into violent reverse as the inhabitants of the high-rise, driven by primal urges, recreate a world ruled by the laws of the jungle.
