Julianne Moore In Talks To Play ‘Carrie’s Psycho Mother!

Back in the original 1976 adaptation of Carrie, Piper Laurie played Margaret White (above), the insane mother of poor Carrie. While it turns out she was right on the money, Margaret was an insanely abusive parent that further drove Carrie into the film’s climactic events. What actress carries enough prowess to take on such a emotional role in the Kimberly Peirce-directed reboot.

Bloody Disgusting got exclusive inside word that Columbia Pictures is speaking closely with Julianne Moore (pictured below) for the titular role. Moore is no stranger to the genre having starred alongside Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal and has also played Lila Crane in the Psycho remake. She is currently working on the exorcism fantasy The Seventh Son for Warners.

Chloe Moretz stars as Carrie in the reboot going behind cameras for a March 13, 2013 release.

The thriller is “An adaptation of the Stephen King thriller about the hyperkinetic teenager who gets pushed too far at the prom and wreaks havoc on her fellow high school students.” King’s bestselling book was turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Amy Irving and Piper Laurie as the repressive mother. On Carrie, Aguirre-Sacasa writes a version that is more faithful to the King book than the earlier movie.

    Great choice. No complaints here.

Why, Why, Why? Enough of the damn remakes. There hasn’t been one good remake yet nor prequel. This just shows that mainstream Hollywood has lack of talent and have to keep digging up classics and destroying them. Does anybody remember the opening sequence to Carrie? Yes the one where she’s having her period. Don’t expect to see that in the remake because actresses now a days have more say to what they can do on screen. But this will be yet another remake flop. Let these classics lie in peace.

Not so happy about the remake. Carrie is one of my favorite movies and I doubt the remake would be any better. But I have to say great choice in Julianne Moore! One of the best actresses around, IMO.

  • divisionbell

There have been several good remakes. Texas Chainsaw, Hills Have Eyes, Friday the 13th, Let Me In…

I agree it’ll probably be weaker than the original, but not willing to right it off just yet.

Julianne is actually a really good choice. Better than the choice for Carrie.

  • thebogeymaniscoming

None of those remakes have been good except for Let Me In…. And I couldn’t think of a better person to play Carrie than Chloe. Isn’t Carrie supposed to be a late starter in the books? Really awkward, shy? Chloe is the perfect choice. Whether or not this will be a good movie, that remains to be seen! I still can’t wait for it!

if this is true, i am %100 into this remake. the original CARRIE can never be made better. it’s brilliant and IMO perfect as it is but with Julianne (and to a lesser extent Chloe, who i DO really like) as Mrs. White this will be EXCELLENT!

  • VampiresDontSparkle

Chloe Moretz AND Julianne Moore!? I’mma be there opening day.

  • zaglewiz

With that picture above they should cast her in EVERYTHING!!!!

  • Jhanse3 (Jhanse29)

No real interest in this flick but it’s building a damn good cast. I guess we shall see.

  • ThunderDragoon

Great choice. I’d love to see her in this role.

How is this EXCLUSIVE? I read this 2 days ago on another site?

  • VictorCrowley

G*ddamn, she is HOT in that pic!

  • R. Flagg

@ Victor: Damn straight she is and that’s why I have a problem with her playing Carrie’s mom. No matter how you know Carrie (be it through King’s novel, De Palma’s film, the shitty sequel and remake, or a combination of these things) you know that Margaret White wasn’t an attractive woman. I know they can fugly Julianne Moore up a bit with make-up and what not but I don’t think they can make her ugly enough to be a believable Mrs. White.

    • gydyup

…or just let her go with no make-up

  • evilfairydust

@R.Flagg: It’s Hollywood…they don’t typically cast “unattractive” people in anything!! I mean, I think Chloe is too pretty to play Carrie, too. But, I do think they will be able to ugly up both of them enough to be convincing. They’re both good actresses, and that’s the most important thing.

  • Trixxxster

Well, if they can ugly up Charlize Theron enough to play Aileen Wuornos I think they can ugly up Moore/Moretz enough to play the Whites. Now should they be remaking this film at all? IMHO, Hollywood needs to find better things to do than second-guessing iconic classics.

I’m probably the biggest fan of the original film and book and have been fascinated by it as far back as 6 years old. The original was excellent in perfect De Palma style, grainy and ethereal in the way it was shot. I was not a big fan of the sequel, but did appreciate the made for TV version as it had more the elements of the novel in it. I am very excited for this big budget remake of Carrie and think Moretz and Moore will be a great duo – I do hope they get the “dance” between Carrie and Margaret down well. I also believe it’s finally time a woman directed (it’s only fitting I think). If anyone is interested, there didn’t seem to be a Carrie Fan Page on Facebook, which I’ve created at Please Like it if you’re interested.
