Hugh Laurie To Diagnose ‘RoboCop’ With Lupus

Published

Casting continues (and then some) for MGM’s RoboCop as Hugh Laurie (pictured above; “House”) has now been set to play one of the film’s primary villains.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Laurie will play the evil and ultra-rich CEO of Omnicorp, the company that makes Robocop.“. In theory I’m sort of against this remake – but I have to admit the cast is impressive and I think Laurie could really, really shine in this role. My interest just shot up a notch.

Jose Padilha is directing the film, which is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman. Laurie is joining quite the cast. Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”) is the title character, a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer. Gary Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates RoboCop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation. Samuel Jackson will play Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world. Cornish has been offered the role of his wife who thinks she is a widow

While no start date has been set, the production is eyeing a shoot in Toronto and has a tentative release date of August 9, 2013.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
