Oh boy, the San Diego Comic-Con is knocking at our door and you know exactly what that means — about 400,000 news stories over the next five days. Since the front page is going to be congested worse than the 405, we’ll try and squeeze unrelated announcements and smaller news breaks into various News Bites over the next week.
We start tonight with Sony’s official August 26 theatrical release of Matthew Parkhill’s supernatural ghost story The Caller, which was scripted by Sergio Casci and stars Rachelle Lefevre (“Twilight,” “New Moon”), Stephen Moyer (“True Blood”), Lorna Raver (“Drag Me to Hell”) and Luis Guzman (“The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3”). Caller is a chilling supernatural thriller in the tradition of ‘The Grudge’ and ‘The Ring.’” Check out the first still and sales poster.
Jessica Chastain (Tree of Life, Take Shelter; IMDB page) is in negotiations to topline Universal International’s Guillermo del Toro-produced genre pic Mama. Spanish helmer Andres Muschietti is directing the project, which expands on his earlier short film, writes Variety. “The story revolves around two young girls who flee from a ghostly woman they believe to be their mother.”
Studios continue to look towards the sky as Warner Bros. has picked up Second Son, a sci-fi spec script from newcomer Justin Rhodes. The studio is keeping the logline under wraps but sources say the story it’s set on another planet with twists. In addition, Warners is aiming for The Red Star, and is in negotiations to pick up feature rights to the fantasy comic book series out of turnaround from Universal. Project’s set with Neal Moritz and his Original Films along with Jason Netter of Kickstart Prods. The comic was created by Christian Gossett and set in a world inspired by Russian folklore and military history, mixing technology and sorcery in The United Republics of the Red Star. The stories, published between 1999 and 2008, included a fleet of Red Star skyfurnaces, gigantic flying warships up to three kilometres long.
Lastly, inside you’ll find a kinda gross color, untreated variation of the awesome U.S. Shark Night 3D poster from France. In theaters Sep. 2, “ ‘Shark Night’ revolves around a group of college friends who spend the weekend at a lake, only to discover that danger lurks beneath its waters.“
