Freddie Highmore stars as Norman Bates in “Bates Motel,” the Psycho prequel from “Lost”‘s Carlton Cuse and “Friday Night Lights”‘ Kerry Ehrin. The series will explore Norman’s back story that helped forge the infamous serial killer. After relocating to a new town, Norman will be tasked with navigating the social land mine that comes with being the new kid at a local high school. His mother, Norma Bates, will be played by Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Up In The Air, The Conjuring).
I’m not entirely sold on the idea of this being a modern day show, complete with iPhones and Norman being a fan of Manga (apparently), but I’ll give it a shot! Meanwhile this teaser (via EW) tells us next to nothing – except that Norman (or Norma?) will probably at least handcuff one woman to a sink before disposing of her.
Max Thieriot, Nestor Carbonell, Mike Vogel, Nicola Pletz and Olivia Cooke also star. A&E is currently filming the series in Vancouver, for an early 2013 premiere.
““Bates Motel” serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film, “Psycho,” and promises to give viewers and intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates’ (Freddie Highmore) psyche unravels through his teenage years and just how deeply intricate his relationship to his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), truly is.”
