Guillermo del Toro Delivers Giant Robots and Monsters In Epic ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer, Poster!
Warner Bros. has just blasted out the first official trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, and it looks EPIC! I rarely go all-caps like that, but it looks like Del Toro has been given the ultimate sandbox to play in and he built the ultimate castle. Also added in a super sweet teaser banner and official one-sheet.
In the film, “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”

HOLY SHIT!!! THE VOICE IN 1:01 to 1:08 (the computer voice… “Pilots, ready to connect” is Ellen McLain. It’s freaking GLaDOS (Portal 1 & 2)!!! I am so damn stoked for this now it’s not even funny.
This looks fucking sweet as all hell! I was counting on much, really wasn’t even interested, but this just blew me away!
Seeing as how Godzilla is my favorite franchise and I adore anything with giant monsters, all I can say is: NNNNNGGGGFFFFUUUH!!!
Fuck that looks awesome. The best things about this is that it’s an original story, it has no franchise obligations, it hasn’t been overhyped (hell – only film nerds even know this has been coming – your average joe draws a blank look) – and it’s Gulliermo motherfucking Del Toro!!!
I’m soooooo going to see this. I’m just glad that Hollywood is stepping up and doing a movie like this. I don’t think they could have picked a better director for this. Best line in the trailer, “Let’s go fishing.”

If you thought that Evangelion was about combat between robots and aliens… I feel sorry then. The combat in Evangelion was secondary. Also that argument is quite void because lack of proof. Giant robots fighting monsters has been a staple in Japan for a lot longer than Evangelion. This movie, if I HAD to compare, would be closer to Gigantor, GoLion aka Voltron, Macross aka Robotech and Mazinger and Ultraman than Evangelion.

I don’t want to say I told ya so, but I told ya so. This is going to be all kinds of sweet. Not watching another second of footage from this until it hits the big screen.
Now that looks like a great Western take on Japanese anime/sci-fi movies. So many times you have Westerners inspired by anime, but kinda get it wrong visually(given they say it’s supposed to be heavily inspired) or just don’t get it. The pitch for the Akira movie seemed like that, among a slew of “faux-anime” Western(mainly American and Canadian) cartoons that totally over exaggerate everything. This movie looks like one of those instances where you have people behind it that “get it”. Some people like things, but when they try to recreate it, it’s obvious they’ve pulled certain things they believe are essential, but it’s really just their perception. Other people can look at something and just “know” what works and what doesn’t.
