‘Evil Dead’ Had Received An NC-17, Cut For “R”

If it weren’t obvious from the various set reports and trailers, the new Evil Dead was aiming at an NC-17.

When a fan asked director Fede Alvarez about the film receiving an R-rating, he replied, “Was proud of scoring a NC17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters.

It sounds as if the film is official rated “R”, but that there’s some juicy content leftover for the eventual home video release.

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film arriving April 12, “Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas all star.

you’re welcome for the info Mr. D (at least Evan gives a thanks shout out). anywho…..i hope too much wasn’t cut out.

    • willyd

It looked really brutal I hope they didn’t cut to much out as well.

    • Se_7_eN

I had a really long rant typed out about Mr. D for you DJ, but it just seemed rude to post. Either way, thanks for the info…. I really hope we get the NC-17 version on disc.

    • Ress EZ

Thanks, djblack1313! That’s really a WOW news! May I ask you? You seem like an insider yourself. You know sooo LOTS of stuff. Just curious.

  • willyd

I’m sure I’m going to love this movie in its R-rated thearetical run but its going to suck like hell that I’m not going to be able to truly enjoy this movie until the release of the unrated (and I pray that it is released by the studio) dvd. Not to mention I’m sure the Dvd Is going to come out probably near hallowen so now we gotta some more. Ugh!!!!

  • willyd

I pray for a special NC-17 special screening. Yea right….lol.

  • Kroork

I al totally ok with an little bit edited down version , as long as we get it all back in for the DVD release! I usually don’t mind cause then it’s like you get to see the movie again for the first time! With new material ! But it had to be added back in as an unrated or extream edition, and not just part of the bonus features.

  • HorrorFanJames

Awesome,I just read the script today, and while I know some of it was changed.I have a’lot of faith that this movie will deliver. But I must admit that the current R ratings sounds a bit timid for a Evil Dead film.I hope that not much was cut out though. But gladly a good unrated version is happening ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope

    • willyd

Seriously where can I find that to read?

      • HorrorFanJames

Message me ya email I will email it to you

  • coldblood

I’m fine with the cuts as what I am really looking for is it to be scary as hell. Hopefully the full version hits the dvd release.

  • Marty McFly

Definitely looking forward to this movie even more now! I’ll be there opening night. The red band trailer is fucking awesome. Can’t wait for the unrated DVD later down the road.

  • Aaron Emery

Although this was obviously going to happen it’s still frustrating! An R rating is intended for adults, the MPAA shouldn’t have control over what adults view. I know, I’m beating a dead horse but damn! I still cannot wait to see this and will be looking even more forward to an unrated DVD!!

    • djblack1313

Aaron, i agree 1000%. apparently adults aren’t allowed to decide what we want to see. i fucking hate the MPAA. so much.

      • Aaron Emery

I don’t believe in it at all. Something like sexual violence I could understand the censorship (although i wouldn’t agree with it) I mean I don’t really need to see infant rape in A SERBIAN FILM to get the effect but over the top blood/gore who really cares. While a rape scene is realistic the fucking sky raining blood/ vomiting gallons of blood frankly isn’t, it’s just some fun entertainment!

  • yellowsicktoad

I can’t recall the last time I was so stoked about a horrormovie, any kind of movie actually.

  • MattSlash

It’s never really a good result when they cut stuff out to fit a MPAA rating. It could make it or break it, but usually breaks it. I’m crossing my fingers that it doesn’t mess up the film’s horror quality. Damn MPAA censorship!

    • WalkingDeadGuy

Yea, it all comes down to how much they actually cut out. Hopefully it’s nothing like what was done to ‘Inside’ for its censored DVD release; it’s like watching 2 different films when I watch the unrated version.

  • Trioxin83

Just a little something extra to look forward to on the eventual Unrated DVD release. Giggity.

  • Kenzo

Ahh shit! I hate when this happens. I’m calling it now, the flick will be great but when we see the unrated version on DVD it will lack the experience we should be receiving.

  • TkMeToYrLdr

The original Evil Dead was X-rated for the level with which it pushed the envelope in ’81. The remake’s NC-17 just means that its following in its predecessor’s footsteps. Good shit man! ๐Ÿ˜›

  • Zombie-Killa

I know I’m going to sound selfish here, but I’m kind of glad this happened. My local theater has a VERY strict policy against showing NC-17 movies. So IF Evil Dead somehow maintained the NC-17 rating, I would’ve been forced to make the trip to another theater, and the place is a really a fucking dump. The customer serivice is bad, the floors are always sticky, and really HATE that place. Sorry, but I like the big comfy theaters and stadium seating. I’m spoiled lol.

Anyway, looking forward to all the nasty stuff on the unrated DVD release! And PLEASE DON”T CUT OUT THE TONGUE CUTTING SCENE!!!!!

    • Aaron Emery

LOL, I live in a VERY small state and have one multiplex within 50 or so miles. We have no stadium seating, the floors are ALWAYS sticky, the employees are damn clueless, and despite a remodel in 3 auditoriums 6 remain filled with broken seats and other lovely attributes. Needless to say horror films end up in the worst of the bunch. I still pay and see a movie that I’m anxiously awaiting but i waste no time getting my money back after tripping over a speaker wire and disabling the sound. Long story short, I am jealous of you Zombie-Killa!!

      • Zombie-Killa

LULZ Aaron! I feel for you man! Funny thing is before I moved five or six years ago, I was in the same situation! My old local theater only had EIGHT screens. No joke, when the War Of The Worlds remake came out, the showings took up over half the theater! The nearest multiplex was in another city, and it was an hour plus drive, and I couldn’t just burn up gas like that. lol.

    • Sami Smith

I’m hoping they don’t cut the tongue cutting as well. that part fascinates me the most. I thought it was awesome. or the part where possessed Olivia cuts the side of her face with a piece of the broken mirror. =3

  • Ravinus

Marketing geniuses! Unlike those pussies promoting Warm Bodies. This movie will get my money in the theater and then again with the blu ray, uncut version. I am stoked for this flick.

  • Incinerated

Literally yesterday I was asking a friend if the trailers stated if the film had been rated yet. I’ve not watched any trailers, the stills I’ve seen posted here are enough to sell me so why spoil it? Anyway, my concern in asking was this right here-edits. I’d rather my first experience be the fullest and typically I’d wait for the home video release, like I did with TCM:B, or track down an unrated release for older films rare as it may be, but this will be worth supporting and no doubt still awesome.

  • divisionbell

Once again the MPAA being the useless, uptight conservatives they’ve always been. Hopefully DVD allows us adults to see the movie we want to see.

  • Trudvang

How on earth is this utter crap still possible!?
I can only hope that the Netherlands will screen the uncut version as they seem to do most of the time.
I am gutted to see that the mpaa is able to F this all up again.
Damn I hate those bastards with a passion, horrible.
way to go mpaa on destroying something a LOT of fans were looking forward to.
and on the director’s cut and what not; why?….they make these films with a goal, mpaa demolished that. I cant understand that people are ok with the cutting and will go like “ah worries, will see the director’s cut” which will be available most likely in october…april towards october…I am going insane here.the movie will LOOSE a lot of it’s brutal visceral impact when cut, just realise that.
screw the mpaa hard…bastards..we live in 2013 not in the damn middle ages. censorship out of the airlock, now!

    • djblack1313

Trudvang, not all the time (regarding the Netherlands). the Swedish version of RESIDENT EVIL AFTERLIFE dvd was the edited (there was no head shot explosion of the Executioner). just sayin’.

    • weresmurf

You DO realise the MPAA said ‘Sure, release it uncut and you can have an NC17’ right? So the MAKERS OF THE MOVIE said ‘Cut it to an R rating’. They WANTED an R for theatrical release. An NC17 is all but death at the box office for movies. An R rating guarantees a wider audience, gives notoriety and allows money to still be made. NC17 wont be carried by a *lot* of cinema chains, barely any advertising can be done, ensuring the movie would be a flop. Now, the most important part here? The movie has used practical effects. Piss and rant all you want be we ALL HATE 100% cgi effects that look dodgy right? Support this movie so you can show them that practical is definitely worth doing when done right. You’ll get your NC17 on dvd, allegedly only a few things have been slightly cut anyhow.

  • ThunderDragoon

We better get the full film on DVD. I would love to know exactly WHAT got cut. Ugh, I hate that the higher ups decide what we can and cannot watch. It’s bullshit.

  • DarrelDreadful

Eh, seen that one coming a mile away. Kinda sucks but could be worse. I hope that everything that got cut ends up on DVD it will be interesting to see what didnt make it to theaters. I huge part of me just wishes they would of left it alone lol Damn MPAA, strikes again. But since the “cutting out” is done all I have to say is C’MON APRIL!

  • menoch

Honestly, whats the point of creating an adult rating NC-17 to separate mainstream movies from porn but then never use it?

  • xAshleyMariex

Well this sucks…this ruined my day.

    • weresmurf

You need more interesting things to occupy your day then… no offense.

  • Spike0037

Holy shit all of you sorry I Will say most of you fuckers bitched and complained about this movie. It’s going to be shit, no Bruce Campbell no Evil Dead. not one of you can hold on to your convictions. Holy shit people you all suck.

    • djblack1313

feel better now, Spikey? get that sand out of your vagina did we? good. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Aaron Emery

HAHA, this is why I have an internet addiction!
Just going to throw out there that most people (including myself) have lost any hope for a well made remake, they are few and far between. Is it really hard to believe that many of us are shocked that this looks fucking amazing?

    • menoch

Come on Spike, take the tissues out your bra and wipe the tears from your eyes and calm down. Personally i’ve never had a problem with remakes, just badly made ones (which unfortunately have been the majority). I also don’t believe i “suck”.

    • Zombie-Killa

I guess you didn’t read the posts with both red band trailers, SPike? Because if you did, you wouldn’t have said anything about complaining. You would’ve noticed the collective foaming at the mouth, going ape-shit, because we can’t wait to see this movie reactions. (:

      And LULZ djblack. Good one.

      • djblack1313

        thanx Zombie-Killa! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Remember-Slithis

I’m happy it’s not being changed from R to PG13!Bruce will most likely have some sort of appearance even if it’s his voice. If not then let’s hope that this still becomes the King Of Remakes!

    • Zombie-Killa

Ha Ha! I never thought about like that! At least will see SOME nasty blood and gore. In the end, I guess something is better than nothing.

  • djblack1313

you guys, don’t forget the MPAA for the most part hates sex/sexuality (and I AM NOT SAYING RAPE IS SEX!!) and anything about it. the vines/rape part is what most likely got cut down. i think gore caused by animals (like PIRANHA 3D) or gore caused by demons (EVIL DEAD) will be fine with them (again, for the most part).

  • djblack1313

“The R rated will have ALL the stuff you are seeing in the trailers. Trust me, You haven’t seen a harder R rated film than ours…”

    • Zombie-Killa

Good thing I read this before going to sleep djblack, because if I hadn’t, I’d probably toss, turn, and punch my pillow all night long! lol.

  • Nothing333

Nice! I think all of us expected nothing less after viewing the original red band trailer.

  • I am happy to hear that the original cut did not pull any punches. What really annoys me is that NC-17 is supposedly a death branding for a film; as if an “R” rating is not already suitable for adults, but we have to worry about the few teenagers that do make it in the theater. Once again, children ruin things for the rest of us grown folk.
They should just release two versions of the film; an R-rated for the masses, and NC-17 as it was originally intended for those of us that don’t like our film experiences compromised. Record companies do it all the time with albums, why can’t film?

  • Spike0037

@djblack1313 yes the sand is now out of my vagina thank you for asking. Now am I worng that all most every not all but all most every said no thay cant remake this, cant Hollywood be original. When bruce said he was not the star all the no Ash then its not Evil Dead. I am I wrong I never said any thing because when. Bruce ans Sam said they were going to be hands on I trusted them. Then when they said Diablo Cody was writing it do you think Bruce and Sam would not say anything if it was a shit script. And as far as the NC-17 to R its more likely that they will knock off a min or two with quick cuts so in stead of the vomit scene bean 8 seconds it will be 5 secondss the tltongue cutting scene I’ll go from 5 seconds to 3 sec. But thanks again for your concern the sand is how to my vagina I’ll let you know if there’s anylasting effects

    • djblack1313

PHEW!! i was worried but as long as you are ok. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Spike0037

Have to be more careful while playing in the sand lol

        • Aaron Emery

LOL sand can be a bitch! Glad to hear it rinsed well!

  • unisonruss

I hope the MPAA sucks a big bag of wieners.

In all seriousness though, I’m a little bummed. Yes, the NC-17 rating was inevitable, but I thought they would be able to work their magic, and get it down to an R without cuts, since this is a studio picture. The MPAA has a history of working easier with studios, vs. indie productions. There better not be many cuts…I’m not thinking about the awesome video release eight months later, I’m thinking of the theatrical release, which is already tarnished because I know we’re not seeing everything that was envisioned by the director.

  • ClasslessKing

It’s definitely a bummer that it happened, but I don’t think it’s going to stop me from seeing it and putting in a pre-order for a Blu-Ray copy. And glad to hear that EVERYTHING that was in the red band is in the R rated cut. Good to hear.

Also, KUDOS to Spike0037 to having the most tame response to that sand in the vagina quip. Never seen an internet commenter actually go along with it like that and not flip shit.

  • Justen

    WOOHOO! Cannot. Wait.
