In an article over at Screen Daily, they reveal that Universal is planning on turning the Guillermo del Toro-produced Mama (read our review) into a franchise.

With Mama having grossed $89.2m [$68.2m from the US] with 43 territory openings still to come, including UK, Germany, France, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Japan and Italy, Universal Pictures’ president of international David Kosse admits the prospects of a sequel are good.

We think there’s potential for a Mama franchise,” he explained. “We’d like to do another one. But those conversations are in the early stages.

He continues, “Mama is the first of this type of model that we’ve had enormous success with so there are more opportunities for this kind of film.

I’m not exactly sure how you do a sequel to the film, but if they want to redo it without all the crappy digital effects work, I’m okay with that…

i like the movie but i’m not sure about a sequel. so Mama coming back for another little child would cheapen what happened in the first movie.

  • Ultrazilla

The special effects were just fine. A sequel will be lame though, the story had a clear cut ending. Hollywood needs to stop milking shit dry…we don’t need another Saw or Paranormal Activity type drawn out, pointless franchise.

I am shocked by the amount of praise MAMA go! It was mediocre at best and the effects were dreadful, have some standards people!

    • BelaManiac

I definitely have to agree with you, Aaron! I really disliked it and the thought of a sequel? Come on!

  • KingaPaine

I’m never too keen on exec’s deciding there should be a franchise when the first film has not even run its course. Especially when ‘Mama’ was initially run as a single standalone film – I liked it, but count me out of any sequels! :)

  • K-Dogg

I really disliked Mama, the kids were the best part of this terrible CGI shitfest. So now you want to make a sequel of a 8 minute short origin story, WOW !!! No thank-you.

  • Slasher_Lover23

HELL. NO! This movie sucked. I tried to give it by, by thinking of it more as a fantasy, but I think about it more and the more I think it’s bad. They made the ending too sappy and stupid. Butterflies, really?

  • DeathValzer

Out of all the movies Guillermo Del Toro’s produced this was the best but still mediocre.

There is no point to do a sequel for a movie JUST because it’s successful in box office. Look at the Sixth Sense it made $300 mill. but no sequel thank you!
