Exclusive: ‘Flatliners’ Director Has A ‘Dragon Tattoo’

Hot off directing the “Under the Dome” pilot for CBS, Niels Arden Oplev has been attached to direct the modern version of Flatliners for Columbia Pictures, Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report.

Oplev, who also directed the original 2009 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will helm the remake penned by Ben Ripley.

Joel Schumacher’s 1990 movie, written by Peter Filardi, centered on a group of medical students – Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, and William Baldwin – who bring subject themselves to near-death experiences in order to see if anything lies beyond the big sleep. The members of the group then are revisited by physical manifestations of childhood sins are not sure if what they are facing is real or hallucination.

The “modern version” of Flatliners? Do cell phones figure into the modern version in some way? That and the internet are the only real shifts in daily life that I can think of that are universally common since 1990.

i loved the original DRAGON TATTOO. i’m up for this.

I remember liking the original, but I can’t honestly remember anything about the film itself.

I would say “let’s hope they don’t ruin it” but this is Hollywood.

Well I’d rather have him than Fincher directing. Seriously, I don’t get why most people think the Dragon Tattoo remake was even nearly as well-made (or acted) as the original. Spending millions on a crappy CG opening sequence and introducing only ONE possible killer is not an improvement. But I’m down for this, and also looking forward to his “Dead Man Down” flick.

Is it wrong to be interested in a remake of a movie you love?
