Sam Raimi Clarifies His ‘Evil Dead 4’ Comments; Has His Passion Returned?

Just the other day it was discovered that Sam Raimi made a huge statement regarding the much-desired Evil Dead 4 in the press notes for Oz the Great and Powerful. “I would love to make Evil Dead 4,” Raimi stated further adding, “My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.

The kids at Bleeding Cool caught up with Raimi at the Oz junket to get a direct response straight from the horse’s mouth. The news isn’t great, but it isn’t all that bad either. Read on to see what he has to say about getting Bruce Campbell back in the saddle and revved up for a return as Ash…

Those guys made me say that,” Raimi told the site. “I am thinking about it but a crowd goes ‘Come on Sam, do it!’ so I said ‘Okay, I guess I was talking to my brother about it.’ But I feel like I was pushed into saying that, a little bit.

He continues talking about his fears in making bold statements: “I’m afraid that every time I talk about it people get really mad at me when I don’t follow through with it. I would like to work on the script over the summer, that much is true. But the reason to come back and do it again is only that they’re making me, those fans.

His older brother, Ivan, has been a strong voice in getting Raimi excited again: “I was saying to Ivan ‘Why do they stay on this thing? Why do they keep at it?’ and he said ‘They want to make a movie. You’re a filmmaker and your fans are asking you to make the movie. What are you, an idiot? Make the movie!’ I guess there’s something I don’t see. It makes sense when Ivan says it… but I didn’t have a tremendous amount of passion until right now to bring to it.

The good news is that is sounds as if Raimi is actually considering it this time. It also sounds like he may once again be passionate about it. Watching the Fede Alvarez-directed remake get made must have pushed his creative buttons. Could we see both worlds collide in the near future? Let us all pray to the movie Gods.

Quit toying with our emotions!I’ll belive it when I see it!

Fans kept asking Spielberg for more Indy and he made Crystal Skull “for the fans.” I only want Raimi to go back to the cabin if he’s truly passionate and right now, he only seems moderately into it. I’d rather him keep making crap I don’t care about instead of half-heartedly doing something so people will stop bugging him.

I’m as excited about the prospect of an ‘Evil Dead 4’ as anyone else, but I can’t help to think that it’ll confuse general audiences. Of course the horror community would understand, but I have many friends who aren’t horror fanatics like me that don’t remember the original Evil Dead series, sad but true. I can’t help thinking like a producer on this one; general audiences will remember the remake then it’ll jump to an Evil Dead 4? It would be awesome if it became a reality, but in terms of profitability, it’s a risky move.

Yeah it makes no sense, especially for they reason they originally stated they would do a remake instead of a sequel to introduce it to a new audience. So they first decided the audience could not recognize “Evil Dead” as a brand and now they show a reboot and a third sequel to a different incarnation of the franchise ? Huh ?

  • Golic

Fans kept asking Ridley Scott to return to the Alien franchise, and look at what happened there. I think ol’ Sam should just let this one be.

  • StevenHarvey1990

I think the time for an Evil Dead sequel is long gone now, especially with the remake coming out.

I love the look and tone of this remake and can’t see an Evil Dead 4 if Fede’ version is a success. Sam getting more involved with this new iteration and it’s sequels seems more likely. Something like this would be great in my opinion:

Evil Dead – Directed by Fede Alvarez
Evil Dead 2 – Directed by Sam Raimi
Evil Dead 3 – Co-Directed by Sam Raimi & Fede Alvarez

    So on and so on.

That way they could bind the franchises together in some way.

What you guys think; Would that please you?

  • dr.lamb

I would prefer that they stop after the remake. The remake looks much better than expected, but I still cannot muster any enthusiasm for it. I will certainly watch it and maybe it will be good, maybe even very good. But I am not keen on watching the whole story over again. It is played out.
And for the sequel: Let it go. Sorry to be such a curmudgeon here.

  • NixEclips

His statements ooze “asshole” and reminds me of his statements regarding Venom in the Spider-Man fiasco. Do not want.

  • ThunderDragoon

I can’t see Evil Dead 4 happening. Not with the remake just around the corner. If Evil Dead is successful, they’ll want to make a sequel to it, not to Army of Darkness. I, for one, would love to see a new franchise come out of this. A serious, instead of a funny, trilogy would be pretty cool.

  • Aaron Emery

I may catch a lot of shit for saying this, but it’s pretty much what I said the other day on the subject. It’s a stupid idea, the remake is a done deal and there is no need to confuse the franchise. If it gets made it is guaranteed to be a dumb DTV flick that is lesser in quality than AoD was. Do we really want another entry in a franchise that (while fun, I mean I do had ARMY Ash as my avatar) turned into only a caricature of itself?

  • Freddys-Nightmare

It wouldn’t necessarily be called Evil Dead 4. They didn’t market Army of Darkness as Evil Dead 3 when it came out. I would hope that it would be given a name that would be easily identifiable to the oldskool fans without being confusing to newbie fans of the remake. I also don’t know how I feel about pressuring Sam into making a movie that he doesn’t seem too enthusiastic to make. I’d love to see another Evil Dead flick that’s chock full of Bruce Campbell, but at what cost..? Honestly, I’d much rather see Don Coscarelli make Phantasm V. At least we know he wants to.

    • STRIK9

That fat fuck will NEVER make that film. All his projects take forever. Angus is like almost 90 lol! He shoulda made that shit 15 years ago.

  • flesheater24

Just one more rami come on. And nobody can make you say anything. I think your just trying to save your fuckin ass. Pshhh. Just make the movie. All us fans are begging for is one more.

  • VampireJack

If his heart isn’t in it – then let it be.

I would love another Evil Dead movie in the original series, but would they be able to give it the same charm as the others?
Perhaps, IF Raimi were really interested.
He is still reasonably young too.

I agree with a previous poster though about wanting Phantasm 5!

  • doomas10

Sam Raimi never lost his passion for me – Drag me to hell was awesome and felt fresh instead of the old dog trying to do new tricks vibe. Can I have evil dead 4 please? Who wants some?

  • STRIK9

Its all about money. Raimi had no problem bangin out those weak ass spiderman movies and all that other shit in a short amount of time, yet it takes him like 20 years to even think about revisiting The Evil Dead franchise. Fuck ’em

  • undertaker78

I hate to say this but I think the Evil Dead-Raimi is gone. I wouldn’t call him snobby but he’s gone a bit Hollywood.

    • dr.lamb

I am going into gossipy terrain here, but Danny Elfman stated that Raimi was a “completely different person” after the success of “Spiderman 2”.
