‘Dracula Year Zero’ Actually Getting Made With Luke Evans Starring, But Now It’s Just ‘Dracula’

Update: Apparently now it’s just called Dracula.

The last time we wrote about Universal Pictures’ Dracula (aka Dracula Year Zero) was well voer a year ago when commercial helmer Gary Shore was in negotiations to direct the film. He’s still onboard (remarkable, actually – for a film in this kind if development) and now the movie has a lead in Luke Evans (The Raven), per THR. Even bigger news? The film has a green light and the project will start shooting this year!

The script tells of a young prince who, when the lives of his wife and child are put in danger by a bloodthirsty sultan, risks his soul to save them, and in the process becomes the first vampire.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the latest draft of the script and Michael De Luca will produce through his Michael De Luca Prods. banner.

The concept of showing how the first vampire came to be is kinda neat, at least it’s not a guy biting his young love so they can stay together. Unfortunately Universal is more apt to put out a big budget CGI-fest rather than an intelligently made movie. I just watched their ‘The Thing’ prequel today (I saw it once when it first came out but didn’t remember much) and I think I liked it even less this time. That’s the kind of product I see them producing. No original ideas, just working from a pre-existing story. I can’t wait to see ‘Stoker’ and ‘Byzantium’ but I think that should provide enough vampire fill for me for a while.

Completely agree with you my friend. I am much more interested in the Demeter iteration.

Mind me being the one to point it out, but there’s a typo: “was well voer a year ago”; instead it should be “over”.
