[BD Review] Brad Finds ‘Lords Of Salem’ To Be A Chore, Mike Loves The Style

lords-of-salem

Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem is finally out (in limited theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, DC, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Detroit) and it’s sort of a polarizing movie. Some people love it, others hate it. I kinda liked it for the strong visuals, but felt that the story was pretty spotty. But Brad and Mike have actual reviews posted – so read those!

Per Brad, “It would be easy to give Lords a pass. It has genuinely creepy imagery, cool scares, super crazy sound design, and even more mind blowing set designs. But there will be no pass, mainly because of the awkwardly unfulfilling ending and the fact that much of the “cool” doesn’t interact with the characters or plot.

Per Mike, “For 100 minutes, I was taken away to another place and the usual insistence in basic storytelling and character eluded me. In this case, the style is the substance.

Who will YOU agree with? Here’s Brad’s review out of TIFF, as well as Mike’s more positive take. As always, write in with YOUR review here!

So, it’s basically an art house film? I had no interest in watching the movie, as it was being billed as a “horror” film from the mind of Rob Zombie, but as an art film? I can get wit it. Might actually go see it this weekend.

I guess I’m hating on Rob Zombie again, but I think I’ll pass on this all together.

Just read the review at Mania.com. Basically , the movie sucks BADLY & is almost a total bore. Most of it is Shots of Sheri moon hanging around & have too many nightmareish Flashbacks of Salem’s past. The ” it was just a Dream” thing gets pretty damn OLD. Reminds me of the great opening of H2…. Which Rob Zombie f***ked up by making that whole scene “just a bad dream that Sheri had.”
Anyway, the reviewer went on to say that even a bunch of RZ fans, in skeleton face-paint were bored shitless throughout the entire movie, then they walked out dissapointed at the end. No apparent plot development or basic story telling or anything that makes any sense, as well as an irritating WTF ending.
Anyway, I’m gonna wait for a redbox DVD rental on this one for sure.

Gave it MORE than a chance, really wanted to like it and really looked forward to it… Hated it, the end.

Once again, in the world of Rob Zombie movies, it always comes down to love it or hate it. I’m on the side of loving it. People say it’s too slow. Don’t listen. It’s supposed to be slow in the “cool and slow burn style” slow. This movie was Argento influenced like “Susperia,” but also totally different. There’s movies about serial killers, cabins that are in the woods, ghosts, blah blah blah, but now we get a movie about the Salem Witch Trials. Furthermore, I thought it was Rob Zombie’s most original movie to date.

All of Rob Zombie’s movies have the critics bashing them. If you enjoy Rob Zombie’s movies, go see it. If not, stay at home. Your probably not a horror fan anyways.

It’s like the guy said “Time to make my Citizen Kane”. I’m not saying it’s bad. It’s just a very take it or leave it film.

“Some people love it, others hate it.”

This one line successfully sums up RZ’s entire film catalog.

Won’t be seeing this. I’m kinda burnt on Sherri Moon. Nothing against her personally, but ready for something else on the menu. I can respect Rob’s loyalty to his wife in casting her in every single thing he’s done, but damn, I dare him to show a little diversity. His movies have become a Sherri Moon costume party. You can only dress her up so many ways before things get stale. They’re way passed that point at this juncture.

At this point every one of his movie titles should be:

“Dreads, long beards, and white make up with weird forehead symbols starring Sherri Moon: Part X”

  • KnightClaw

Man, you nailed that right on the head. ENOUGH with Sheri f**kin Moon. Let’s see if he casts her in his next “HOCKEY team ” movie. I’m sure they will all have long hair, beards, dreads… Etc.
I hate what he did to Michael Myers in H2 as well. Just because Michael would probably grow a hobo-beard in reality, doesn’t mean you have to fkin SHOW IT onscreen -( not to mention the stupid mom & white horse bullshit).
I still have respect for Rob, but, not happy with several of his choices & his lack of casting diversity.
Glad he’s NOT doing the next HALL0WEEN film.

I just saw this and had a HUGE Twitter rant about The Lords of Salem. For the record, I want to say respectively that I’m a Christian who goes to Church every week and I’m pretty religious. I LOVE all genres of movie and content doesn’t bother or offend me. I mean I for the most part hate family films and all my favorite movies are rated R. I’m not a fan of Rob Zombie’s music, but I’ve actually enjoyed his movies with the exception of Halloween 2. Yes, I actually liked the first Halloween movie he did.

I went into The Lords of Salem with very positive intentions. I know Brad’s review was negative and on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s rotten, but still were a majority of his movies. I think The Devil’s Rejects was fresh… but anyway, I HATED this movie.

I thought it was beautifully shot and some of the imagery was horrific which I liked. The unfortunate thing was that basically all of the imagery that I just mentioned were in a dream state/hallucination. That ruined it for me because I would have rather seen something happen to her.

The acting was actually okay. I feel like Sherri would have been better with a better supporting cast. I understand that Rob always uses her and that’s okay, but he could’ve done a lot better for her and Rob failed on that part.

I’ve seen so many witch movies, satanist cult movies and demonic possession movies before that always said hail satan or had a lot of Devil worship. Some movies in this sub-genre are brilliant. These movies were very effective with the dialogue and set pieces, but Rob Zombie tried so hard to be shocking and really push the satanist cult in the movie that by the time hail satan was said about 60 times, it lost momentum.

The movie was tedious, slow and most important… NOT SCARY. I didn’t jump and I didn’t feel scared the whole time. I was in the theater when three other people showed up. By the time the movie ended, one person had left. The couple in the theater at the end said “what was this crap?” I must say that I feel the same way. The Lords of Salem sucked horribly.

Saw this earlier today and i thought it was pretty decent. i loved the actual witches and i didn’t find the ending or plot to be disappointing. the movie was a tad slow and i know he was going for that. Sheri did a great job in her look, but thanks to some of the not so good screenplay writing, she faltered in some of her lines. i give it a 7/10.

  • nplover

The only MAJOR disappointment i had was the scene involving the poster where Sheri is walking in that awesome makeup and knitted shirt. it was built up too much and led to a silly and nonsensical 10 seconds….

  • KnightClaw

Finally saw Lords of Salem for myself. It was a “Slow Burn” alright, … A long, slow burn through my freakin WALLET & patience. What a piece of Crap. Way too many “bad dream” sequences , while NOTHING really HAPPENS to Sheri moon’s character until the Craptacular , Stupid as hell Ending!
wow. What a waste of a great premise. The Witches never actually came back to modern day Salem to reek bloody revenge.
I was hoping it was going to be similar to John Carpenter’s ” The FOG,” where the curse comes back & actually takes revenge on the townsfolk , but, no such luck.
One of Rob Zombie’s WORST films, besides the horrid H2.
    Enough said .

I have read somewhere else a comparison between this Zombie’s and Suspiria or the Beyond respectively form Mr Argento and Mr Fulci and I thought like “Are you serious ?!” but then the columnist surprised me with another unhappy comparison “Rosemary’s Babe, Jodorowsky’s movies”..
Honestly, I didn’t get the movies especially when it turned ( as usual after all its Mr Zombie’s ) to a low graded Nirvana’s or Soundgarden’s ( Heart Shaped Box, Black Hole Sun ) music videos straight from the nineties
Although Mr Zombie isn’t my cup of tea I’d try and watch it once more
