Park Chan-wook Asked Josh Brolin NOT To Remake ‘Oldboy’…New Stills!

A few days ago director Spike Lee took to Reddit to chat up his Kickstarter project, as well as the Josh Brolin-starring remake of Park Chan-wook’s classic Korean thriller Oldboy.

An interesting bit of information came out of the IAMA in which Lee explains that Brolin reached out to Chan-wook for a blessing. The result? You can interpret…

Before we started the shoot, Josh Brolin went to Park Chan-wook and asked for his blessing,” explains Lee. “He told Josh ‘you and Spike make your own film, don’t remake ours.’ And that’s what we did.

Hilarity ensued with the a following reader (Reverve) response: “To me that almost sounds like Brolin didn’t get his blessing.

I’d say I agree with the commenter, although, I do know for a fact there are some extremely new elements to this version that will still shock and awe fans of the original.

In theaters november 27, “The pic is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

I’m no fan of this remake but it’s pretty obvious that Park was less “Don’t remake my film” but more “Do your own thing with it”. All his interviews have shown that he doesn’t have a problem with it.

Shows he *did* give his blessing. He said ‘Make a good movie, make your own movie, just don’t make a *copy*.’ Which is a perfectly legitimate and fair thing to say on Park Chan-wooks part.

Wait? shouldn’t Spike have gone to get Chan-wook’s blessing?..oh wait never mind this is the same guy who even though having presumably more money then he knows what to do with, is starting a kickstarter project…for him self *rolls eyes* but hey good for Brolin for having the honor and decency of asking Mr. Chan-wook’s blessing before starting to shoot, I’m still looking foreword to the flick, but really only because of Josh Brolin, the man can act. Oh and the original is a work of pure cinematic art, just for the record 😀

    Fuck Spike Lee

    • ZedtheUndead

Short and to the point, I like it, 😀 oh and update on the kickstarter, for those who need a reason to rage, it has hit the one million dollar mark…who the hell is funding this?…unless he’s using his own money because no one else will, wouldn’t that be some shit? but seriously, I’m surprised a more…how to put it…”regal” director didn’t take this project on, could you imagine if Martin Scorsese picked this up?

I like Park’s professional way of saying fuck off, lmao… But from what I’ve seen, I am looking forward to this version. Probably will just pregame it with a few mixed drinks for a little fun insurance.

why do people always ask for the blessing of a remake? even if the original writer or director said “no” it would still happen… anyway this looks good so I really hope it follows through

    • ZedtheUndead

Because from one director to another, it’s the respectful thing to do, and if they say “no” it doesn’t always mean that they’ll do it anyway, in this case Park in a round about way did say “no” BUT did say he would be cool with Spike doing his own version of it, which he did, so it’s not like he said no and Spike was like, “too bad I’m doing a full remake anyway. Not all directors are self centered ass clowns, some do hold buy a code of directorial honor.
