‘Paranormal’ Team Still Tinkering With ‘Area 51′

It’s been years since director Paranormal Activity‘s Oren Peli directed his sophomore effort, Area 51, which stars Glenn Campbell, Sandra Staggs and Jennefer Ludwigsen.

The found-footage alien film, which follows the terror unleashed as reporters visit a secret base that houses extraterrestrials, has gone through various testings, and multiple reshoots. And there’s still no word on if it will ever be released. We refer to it as the “lost Blumhouse film” – which is becoming as secret as Area 51 itself.

During an interview for Jason Blum’s Insidious: Chapter 2, he opens up briefly to Wegotthiscovered about the delay, and why it’s taking so long.

It exists! We made it! We’re futzing with the movie in post production,” he explains. “Paranormal Activity, remember, it was made about four years before it came out, so Oren [Peli] likes to tinker, and he’s still tinkering, but hopefully one day we’ll both see the finished version!

According to Blum, Peli is still working on the movie, I guess? According to IMDB, the film will be released this November in Brazil, which means it has to be near-completed. Hopefully some new developments will be declassified in the coming months…

He says that PA was released 4 years later due to Oren’s continued development of the film?…Ummm, wasn’t the finished film screened in 2007, only to have Paramount release the film as is (minus the different ending, but I doubt the reshot ending(s) took 2 years to edit) 2 years later.

My point is that this all just feels as if the film didn’t test very well and the reshoots aren’t helping. You don’t mess with a film for years if you aren’t trying to fix major problems.

Agreed. And word (for its worth) on IMBD is that the test screenings were in fact horrible. Kinda sucks because even though its a cliche set-up, I thought it would be cool to see a found-footage Area 51 movie. But this has been in the making for like 10 years now lol

Sheesh, I had completely forgotten about this movie. Paranormal came out 4 years later because for the most part that’s how long it took to get a distributor to back it. Area 51′s problems are probably due to the fact that Oren Peli is a shitty director. Paranormal had a great premise and that’s what overcame the shoddy filmmaking.

I have wanted to see this movie badly whether it sucks or not for years… hopefully we get a trailer and stills, realistically it will be released in early 14 at the earliest.
