Here’s some shit news to end the week; it feels like a fatality to my optimism.

Kevin Tancharoen took to Twitter to announce that he is now longer attached to direct New Line Cinema’s remake of Mortal Kombat, which we exclusively broke the news about way back in Jan. 2010,

After 3 years of Kombat, I’ve decided to move on to other creative opportunities. I wish everyone involved in the movie big success,” he tweeted. “Thanks!

Tancharoen directed the incredible short film “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” as a proof of concept for a Kombat movie he tried to pitch. A huge fan of the video game, he enlisted Oren Uziel to write the short and hired actors such as Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan. Explained THR, the short was viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube, and although no movie deal materialized, he was asked to direct the 10-episode web series attracting more than 50 million unique visitors. A second season recently premiered on Machinima.

The franchise follows the best fighters from around the globe who are summoned to an island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will determine the fate of the entire planet.

insidious 5 trailer

In the wake of last year’s box office hit Insidious: The Red Door, Sony has announced tonight that the next installment in the Insidious franchise has been dated for 2025 release.

You can expect the untitled next movie in theaters August 29, 2025.

Deadline notes in their report tonight that this particular project is NOT the previously announced spinoff movie Thread: An Insidious Tale, which doesn’t yet have a release date.

Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani will star in Thread: An Insidious Tale.

Director James Wan’s original Insidious movie in 2011 was followed by Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), Insidious: The Last Key (2018), and last year’s Insidious: The Red Door, which became the highest grossing movie in the entire franchise thus far.

Needless to say, this franchise still has a lot of life left in it. Stay tuned for more.
