[TV] Plot Details for “Scream” Series (Exclusive)

Updated with casting breakdown: Ghostface has been spotted on YouTube, and will soon go viral…

Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned of new Intel for MTV’s “Scream”, their television adaptation of Wes Craven’s classic slasher franchise that spawned three sequels.

I’m told that Craven will actually be directing the pilot(!) this summer from a screenplay by Jill Blotevogel.

Our source explains that the “rules” of slasher movies is at the center of this new series, as it has been for the franchise. The pilot explores a YouTube video that has gone viral and causes problems for the protagonist, Audrey, who is caught in the middle of murder and the town’s troubled past.

Casting should be underway soon.

The Scream franchise has delivered more than $600M worldwide for Dimension Films.

UPDATE: Here’s the breakdown via TVLine.

* Harper Duval: A 16-year-old beauty “who’s a little too introverted and intellectual to be a social butterfly” but has nevertheless been annointed by the popular crowd to be one of their own. “She feels guilty that she has drifted away from former best friend Audrey,” but at least she’s got a Gilmore Girls-esque relationship with mom Maggie to keep her sane.

* Audrey Jesen: Haper’s former BFF is described as “the bi-curious daughter of a Lutheran pastor” who’s “more arresting-looking than pretty.” This “artsy loner” dreams of being a filmmaker and shares a close bond with tech genius Noah.

* Noah Foster: Audrey’s closest confidante is “creative, brilliant and tech-savvy enough to be the next Steve Jobs.” Lucky for him, he’s got a great sense of humor (“a la John Cusack in his teen prime”) that helps him navigate the halls of his high school. What’s more, Noah possesses “an encyclopedic knowledge of books, films, TV, apps, etc.”

* Margaret “Maggie” Duval: Harper’s mom, in her early to mid-40s, is the town’s medical examiner, “a grown-up science geek who plays down her beauty.” Maggie spends a lot of her time trying to make up for the fact that Harper’s dad abandoned them. Oh, and she’s harboring “a dark secret from her past.”

I really want this to be great but… MTV… I like the fact that Wes is directing though. I hope they pull together a solid cast next.

  • Kroork

This is gonna be so bad!
The scream franchise is one of my faves and this damn show is gonna ruin it all. I want a scream 5 damn it!

    • WalkWithMeInDarkness

I’m with you. I just want Scream 5. I can’t lie and say I won’t check this out, especially if Wes is involved but I’m worried it’s gonna be another Teen Wolf type deal and that is not appealing to me. But maybe we’ll get Scream 5 if the show ends up being successful.

  • Voorhees83

I’m just sick of all the family members wanting to kill Sydney. Who will it be this time? Sydney’s cousin’s husband?

    • Lemonade

Where the hell does it say anything about Sidney(not Sydney) you dumb buffoon?

  • anthonyd1

They are going to ruin everything with this show. Just give us Scream 5 please.

  • SaltSlasher

MTV has a few shows that aren’t bad. I like the Rob Dydrek shows. But I doubt they can offer a quality slasher film on a channel for teenagers. I though pre-teens were the worst, but that 14-17 year audience is the worst. Cause it is adult themed, but totally out of whack with the real world, like scenarios that would never play out, not even in movies.

I know there are writers who could tear this up, but Wes is putting in a big risk directing it himself for MTV. I would have rather preferred a “Netflix Original” like Hemlock Grove, which is just like how Eli Roth was executive producer, but also directed the first episode.

As for people wanting Scream movie, I believe TV series are better than movies. Like Star Wars Clone Wars, just in Season 1, they had the equivalent of the first three movies in new media. Stories can reach further into the world, cause each episode doesn’t have to focus on main story line!

  • Joey

I love Ghostface probably will turn into my favorite tv show.I am ready for Scream 5 too.

  • Bouncy X

wonder how the mystery will unfold. will it be one killer a season or the whole series will follow the one….or would it even be a different every episode or two?

    • Stitch_101

I could see the shows outline being similar to that of “Harper’s Island” with the overall season revolving around the mystery of the killer and main characters, with a character or two being killed off every episode. Every ‘season’ could be the equivalent of one movie, with a new killer every season but with threads that connect them.

Overall, I’m on the fence about this. It has the potential to be good… I’ll wait until I can actually see what they do with it before casting judgement.

Stitch_101, i loved HARPER’S ISLAND so much!! i’d be happy if this SCREAM show ends up being like what you wrote!

        • Patrick-Cooper

HARPER’S ISLAND was such an addicting show. “One by one…”

  • HMH

Wes directing is a good thing. Am I the only one who likes Teen Wolf…

    • ThunderDragoon

You’re not alone! I love Teen Wolf. That’s why I have hope that this series will be good too.

    • djblack1313

HMH, i LOVE Teen Wolf!! season 3B (Kira, the Nogitsune/Kitsune storyline) was awesome! i’m still quite bummed that my favorite character was killed off though!

MTV has had some pretty good/decent genre projects. TEEN WOLF and both MY SUPER PSYCHO SWEET 16 slashers are really good! so there’s a chance that this show could be good/decent.

  • doomas10

I was against this and I wonder if they will follow the horror route rather than something in the tone of let’s say Buffy The Vampire Slayer (that show is just amazing). A good thing that Wes Craven is directing but I will be surprised if it managed to be scary. Will it involve a plot that spans lots of episodes or a mystery per time? I think it would be great to see the mystery unsolved in more than one episode – to get a different vibe. It’s MTV but not all signs are proclaiming doom

  • c-s-a78

win or lose,im just glad to see ghost face on the screen again!!!

  • crizero

I want to see Scream 5, not some stupid MTV Teen Show !

  • joeshmo447

Noah and Audrey are the killers….just my first thought, seems obvious

    • WalkWithMeInDarkness

I thought the same thing. The artsy loner who wants to be a filmmaker and the tech-savvy movie geek? Sounds like Charlie Walker times 2. But of course, those things could just be total red herrings to throw us off the trail of the real killer (or killers). Scream has always tried to do that and for me it’s always been successful. Even if I guessed one killer I didn’t guess the other one. And you know what, being that this somehow gets started from a viral video makes me think these two probably aren’t ultimately responsible. Unless the writer is trying the whole Billy Loomis thing of “let’s point at them so much you’ll think it’s definitely not them but then it really is!” and they can revel in the fact that they fooled us. Seems to have become the norm: the killer is either the one they point at initially to throw you off or the one they never once point at (Jill).

  • DANTEarg

No Neve Campbell??? Get the Fuck out!

  • crizero

I hoped to see Scream 5, instead of that I get some stupid MTV teen drama.

    • Jeff Rittenour

    • Shit

me too. this sounds lame. im a huge fan so i’ll check the pilot it out. definitely helps that the first episode is directed by wes.

  • thornvald80

i got a title: “16 and killed by ghost-face” … btw I still remember when u could actually see music videos on MTV… well being old…

  • Krug09

I have a feeling as big of a Scream fan as i am i probably won’t even give this show a chance. We’ll see.

  • DeadInHell

Wes Craven on board means that I have at least some hope for this.

Also, I didn’t catch any mention of ghosts or other supernatural bullshit. Does that mean that they’ve realized how incredibly stupid that idea was for a Scream series?
