We’ve been talking about a third Gremlins movie for about as long as third Ghostbusters, so much so that I’ve lost track of where we stand in the rumor mill.
From what I recall, Warner Bros. was fast-tracking the so-called “remake”*, and Chris Columbus has been campaigning for both this and a Goonies sequel for quite some time.
Now, according to the Tracking Board, Columbus is set to produce the Gremlins reboot, which tells the story of a boy who gets a strange creature for Christmas, only to, through his own negligence, unleash a horde of the little monsters on his town. As they explain, the project has been in the works for a while, with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg set to produce through their KatzSmith Productions company, but it was unknown whether Columbus, who wrote the script of the original movie, would return.
Original producer Steven Spielberg is also involved in some production capacity.
*And while it’s being pegged as a remake, it’s actually a faux sequel (you know, the new cool in Hollywood), says /Film. We all know that the trick studios are utilizing is retelling the same story, only 20 or 30 years later, with a throwback to the original (see The Thing, Evil Dead, etc.). Yeah, nice try…
Anyways, I love Gremlins, and am excited to see if there is a unique and new angle to the property (they really broke bizarre ground with the ridiculous sequel). What would be really cool, though, is if they did it darker as originally intended.
