Ghostface Won’t Appear In “Scream” TV Series?

Bloody Disgusting regular Curtis L. just tipped us over to, who just published an interesting interview with RJ Torbert from FunWorld.

I guess Torbert is the rights holder to the “look” of Ghostface, the slasher icon associated with the Scream films. According to him, Ghostface will not be making an appearance in the new MTV “Scream” series.

“To answer your question regarding the “Scream” TV series…

Please note, that I had been in communication with TWC regarding this and they have informed me, that as of now, and during the initial launch that Ghostface is NOT involved in the new format. They also indicated that because of this direction, it does not mean, that Ghostface will not be involved at a later date. So, there is still a question, to the question.

However, as of now, there is no involvement.

That’s a curious statement, as there could be an eventual tie-in to the series. But, as of this writing, it sounds as if there are no real plans to bring Ghostface into the television world.

Here’s some clarification by Torbert in regards to the rights:

We believe , ‘Scream’ is Ghostface, and Ghostface is Scream. However, while Ghostface is owned by Fun World, The Scream Motion Picture Franchise is owned by The Weinstein Company and it is their option to Film a movie or TV show without Ghostface.

Regardless, we wish them the best of luck and I’m sure ‘Scream’ fans will check out the series. Who knows what will happen in the future regarding the series and Ghostface. Never say never.

The MTV series stars Willa Fitzgerald, Taylor-Klaus, Bobby Campo (The Final Destination), Connor Weil (Sharknado) and Joel Gretsch (Witches of East End, V, The 4400). You can read about their characters here.

It’s said to center on a YouTube viral video gone wrong, which leads to adverse repercussions for teenager Audrey Jesen and will also serve as the “catalyst for a murder and opens up a window to the town’s troubled past.”

  • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

RJ Torbert is at it again! That dork. I’m willing to bet this isn’t true. Next he’ll be telling you he’s directing Scream 5 and 6.

    • Khy

I never trust anything he says.

    • Christensen

oh my god i hate that guy so much. greedy pig.

      • wehoaks

And an attention whore. Remember when he said there’d be multiple costumes in 4 just to drum up business in their alternate, fake, costumes?

        • Christensen

riiiiiiiight. and that godawful “powers & johnson: the face of fear” novel cash in. embarrassing.

  • Nicolas Caiveau

    A Scream series without Ghostface ? O___o
    What’s next ? A Fast & Furious series without cars ?
They really want that hard to get their series cancelled after the pilot ?

  • Khy

I just wanna know if the pilot was received well by the network and if it’s going to move on to a full season

  • Meatwad

This show is ‘dead on arrival’ without Ghostface. Its like Star Wars with no lightsabers.

    • huntermc

Or like Texas Chainsaw Massacre with no chainsaws. And not in Texas.

  • Trisha Tachanawa

“Scream’ is Ghost Face, and Ghost Face is Scream.” Enough said.

  • Taboo

Mehh, they should just make this a mini series..

    • tyler

Or not at all. It was awful to think that someday Neve, Courtney, and David will at some point not be involved in “Scream,” but never once did I think it’d happen without the film’s iconic mask that the entire franchise was built on.

  • Nick M.

Yup, just lost all hope/interest in the show

  • Kroork

Lmao omg the news regarding this awful idea just keeps getting worse and worse! This will be so bad!

  • Jonathan Larsson

Then what is the bloody point?!

  • Caitlyn Gessing-Putz

Ghostface is still in the series, however the TV show takes place in a world where Scream is a movie. So it’s not as cut and dry as you might think.

    • wehoaks

Just curious, how do you know this?

      • Caitlyn Gessing-Putz

Can’t cite my source. You’ll see soon enough (if MTV decides to move forward… no decision yet).

    • J Jett

how can Ghostface be in this first season when it says “Ghost Face is NOT involved in the new format”????? Caitlyn, please explain.

      • Caitlyn Gessing-Putz

Because the published quote that they’re running with on this totally disreputable site is not entirely accurate.

        • J Jett

Caitlyn, oh! thanx for clarifying for me/us! i still hope and think this show could be good!

    • willdallas53

good job trying to pass off new nightmare as fact.

  • tyler

What’s really scary about this is the amount of people this idea had to go through and not one of them put a stop to it. Complete disgrace to horror fans, Wes, Kevin, and every single person who put the work into the franchise to make it the classic that it has become.

  • Daniel Rodrigues

So, if there isn’t Ghostface and there is a supernatural element, how is this even Scream?

    • Christensen

there isn’t a supernatural element that concept and writers were dropped a year ago

    • wehoaks

Catch up. Supernatural was only a rumor and it died over a year ago.

  • Matt

Remember that Friday the 13th series without Jason? Me neither

    • J Jett

      wait, HALLOWEEN 3 anyone?

    • MDNA

Looks like you skipped the first movie, the 5th and most of Jason Goes to Hell.

      • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

Oh yeah, people loved 5 and 9. Dumb fucking moron.

        • J Jett

          part 5 was actually decent.

          • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

Lookup the box office for the third, fourth, and fifth films. People voted with their dollar. Don’t be a moron.

          • Matt

Hi guys. Just to clear up, I was referring to the Friday 13th TV series that cashed in on the name, drew fans in and ultimately disappointed 🙂

          • wehoaks

It was the highest rated syndicated show of all time. It was a huge hit and it ended because they decided to stop making them. Hardly a disappointment.

        • MDNA

Huh? I’m a dumb fucking moron? Learn how to read asshole. We weren’t talking about which movies in the series people loved so your comment doesn’t make sense!

          • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

He said “Remember that Friday the 13th series without Jason”. SERIES. Friday the 13th, as an overall series, features JASON as the main antagonist. So YOU singling out individual movies in the franchise actually makes less sense. Haha, goodness.

          • MDNA

I was pointing out that the series has had movies that didn’t fully revolve around Jason: first installment didn’t even involve Jason (other than a backstory for his mother’s motivation), the 5th was a copycat killer, and the 9th involved him jumping from body to body (one of the main criticisms of the movie from fans of the series is that 5 doesn’t involve the real Jason and the 9th didn’t show him in his body/outfit). I never said that the series as whole didn’t mainly feature Jason, but using the Friday the 13th series as an example doesn’t make sense. Your initial comment doesn’t make sense and your rebuttal as well since you keep responding based off of things I never said. Judging by your comments, you’re either a troll, uneducated, ignorant and/or trash so I will ignore you going forward.

          • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

Thanks for the essay, you sensitive and genuine soul.

    • SuperKilla

@MDNA and @RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c I think Matt was talking about the tv series Friday the 13th.

  • Saren Nevac

Seems stupid using the “Scream” brand, when we all attach Ghostface to that branding.

    • J Jett

      wait HALLOWEEN 3 anyone?

  • Victor

UMMM FIRST OFF?? WHAT IN THE FLYING F*$K??? So Scream a classic slasher series that’s known for Ghostface, won’t have ghostface? Wow like really? This is a kick to the Fans of the series, I mean its bad enough they want to turn this into a Tv series but now no ghostface? This will FLOP HARD! Scream is known for ghostface for that just create a NEW SHOW with a NEW TITLE AND ITS OWN STORYY!!! I AM AGAINST THE NO GHOSTFACE ASPECT!

  • Kirby4Ever

And the minuscule sliver of hope I had left for this show was just shattered…

  • edricstorm2

Are you freaking kidding? LOL. Let’s do a Nightmare on Elm Street with no Freddy while we’re at it. Hell, let’s have a Jaws show set in Nebraska.

  • wehoaks

I forgot. A costume made scream. Not suspense, fully fleshed characters, and a gripping mystery.

    • I think a lot of us just feel like this show will have none of those things and having Ghostface in it would be our only link to the movies. But you make a fantastic point. All of those things were instrumental in making Scream great.

      • wehoaks

I think people are putting to much stock into what this dickbag RJ has to say. He’s a fuckhead. And why do you just feel like the show won’t have any of the above? People want to hate this without seeing a frame of it.

        • That feeling comes from my lack of faith in MTV. I’m not the type to say “I know for a fact this show will be complete shit” but nothing we know about it so far inspires any hope in me that it’ll be any good. I don’t care for most of the cast or the people writing it. Honestly, I don’t want to hate it. I would love for it to be awesome. It’s just not easy for me to trust the people behind Teen Mom, 16 & Pregnant and The Hills with a television version of one of my favorite horror franchises. Also, what’s the deal with this RJ guy? Is he known for making BS statements or something? I’ve only ever seen him on the Still Screaming documentary talking about the mask. I definitely don’t wanna put stock into anything he says if he’s a known bullshitter.

          • wehoaks

All those mtv shows you mentioned are in the past. Teen wolf is actually very entertaining and awkward is one of the funniest shows on tv. Not to mention those I you mentioned are unscripted trash. They have been able to do scripted fairly well.

    • Christensen

      my thoughts exactly

  • Rainbowbeany

Boooo! No ghost face? Not cool!!! I’ll still check it out. But I’m pretty disappointed by this. But I look forward to see how this is going to work, if at all.

  • SuperKilla

I’m looking at this different. If Ghostface is not in the show, when the show comes out and ends up sucking, because there is no Ghostface it won’t be defecating on the films, it’ll just be a shitty show.
Friday the 13th the series had nothing to with the films so it didn’t really effect the films.

    • That’s a good way of looking at it! Maybe everyone will hate it so much that they’ll say “Ok, we’re canceling the show and doing a 5th movie and Ghostface will be back!”. That’d be sweet.

      • SuperKilla

  • ThunderDragoon

Ghostface has to be in it, otherwise it won’t be Scream.

    • J Jett

  • WalkingDeadGuy

No Ghostface? LMFAO! It’s not scream without Ghostface, a knife, and menacing phone calls.

    • J Jett

      HALLOWEEN 3.

      • WalkingDeadGuy

Halloween 3 is one of my favorite horror movies, but it has no business having ‘Halloween’ in the title. It should have been called ‘Season of the Witch’.

        • J Jett

          WalkingDeadGuy, i actually agree w/ you. 🙂

        • Frank

          Yes! Fucking thank you!

    • Speaking of menacing phone calls I haven’t heard anything about Roger Jackson being involved in this. Where Ghostface is the face of the franchise, Roger is the voice of the franchise and it won’t be Scream if he’s not the voice on the phone tormenting people. Assuming the killer in this show even makes phone calls. It’s MTV, the killer might just text potential victims or follow them on Twitter (pun intended).

      • Javi Simon

It’ll read like, “What’s ure fave scary movie?” @ghostfacekiller

  • Evan3

On one hand, this is fucking ridiculous. On the other, I hope they make it similar to Halloween 3. Divided feelings, thy name is MTV’s Scream.

  • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

    Ooh ooh! My turn!

    What’s next, a James Bond movie without…

    … Jaaaaaaames Bond?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA boobies.

  • What?? After reading this I got taken back to the Rock movie and the scene where the barber responds to Walmack after being denied scissors “Did they tell Picasso no brush?”

  • It’s starting to sound like they just wanted to make a teen murder mystery show and said “what really well known teen horror/thriller can we take the name from so more people will watch this? Scream! That’s really well known! Let’s use the title and nothing else to sell our show!”. People are bringing up Halloween 3 but don’t forget that the reception to it at the time was really bad and proved that people felt it wasn’t Halloween without Michael Myers (no offense to fans of Halloween 3, I know some of you love it but you can’t deny that a lot of Michael Myers fans hate it). Every Halloween film afterward has featured Michael because they found out the hard way how most would react to not having him in the movie. The same with Friday the 13th Pt. 5 – A New Beginning. The real Jason was in dream sequences while an impostor was killing everyone off and to this day a lot of people still hate that movie for it. It clearly doesn’t pay off to take an iconic villain out of a franchise. From the comments here, as well as other sites reporting it, the number of people who hate this possibility is greater than the number of people who are okay with it.

Beyond Sidney, Gale and Dewey the Ghostface mask is the face of the franchise, the defining visual element that people associate with Scream. Ghostface became an icon despite the fact that it’s a new killer (or killers) in each movie. I felt that having the costume in the show would at least make up for it being on MTV and having an all new cast but if they aren’t even going to use it then there really is no point in calling it Scream. At the very least Friday Pt. 5’s killer used Jason’s look and to be honest it’s still a standard Friday movie up until that reveal. Having said all of that, we could be getting ahead of ourselves. No one has come out and said “We are definitely not using the Ghostface costume” so maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll contact Fun World once they find out if MTV wants to pick up the show (or maybe get luckier and have them cancel this show and do Scream 5!). I wish. 🙁

    • Christensen

      shut up

      • Freedom of speech.

        • wehoaks

It is. So is them telling you to shut up. Shut up.

          • I don’t recall saying they didn’t have the right to freedom of speech. He or she can say whatever they want, just as you or I can.

          • wehoaks

Exactly. A good example is telling you to shut up.

          • Okay.

          • Frank

It is okay, I’ve read soooo many articles and find this wehole and Ridley whatever, in all the comments just tearing people asses for NO good reason! Any who I like that profile pic! Badass

          • Thank you! I appreciate that. The Crow is my favorite non-horror movie ever.

          • Frank

Yea man, an actual masterpiece through and through, I’m soooo depressed that they want to remake it. Its going to bomb!

          • I made peace with the idea of them remaking it awhile ago. I don’t care what they do or who they cast. Brandon Lee will always be Eric Draven to me. Nothing Hollywood can churn out is gonna change the way I feel about it. The final line of this article sums it up perfectly:

          • Frank

Hey that’s exactly like a quote from, “The Crow”, creator James O’Barr. ” Hollywood hasn’t done anything to my books, there on the shelf; go buy them.” Awesome

          • Frank

Dude! Really?! Awhahahahaha fucking dirty little bully man ! Awhahahaha 😀

          • wehoaks

          • Frank

            Bully 😀

          • wehoaks

Last… also since you’re a tool and will keep replying and continue to be a hypocrite, I’m gonna keep it to this thread. I will also keep it to one word from now on as well.

          • Frank

Yea don’t want to get your panny threads all bunch up in that wehole 😛

          • wehoaks

          • Frank

Yea take it to the sheets bully were done here lol

          • wehoaks

    • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

I have a clear, strong connection with my gut, and felt there was something inherently wrong with your post, but didn’t know what. Now, I’ve cracked it. Let me spill it out:

You are so off with just everything. You can’t compare a lack of Ghostface with a lack of Jason. Scream has many variables that make up its stew, but its very foundation is that of mystery, characters and dialogue. We root for Sidney.

By the time Friday the 13th 5 came out, the one constant was pretty much Jason, and the isolated setting of the woods. Now, had Alice or Ginny returned in a main part in the films that succeeded theirs, then that’d be a different story.

This is a Scream TV series, and not another movie. If Scream 5 came out and there was no Ghostface, okay, room for uproar. But this is a different platform.

Back then in the 80’s, it was all about making a buck with franchises. Hire that porn director, get some unknowns, fuck it, we’ll make it all back opening weekend.

Nowadays, I think it’s very much more about quality. Heck, SCREAM kicked the horror genre in its ass by basically saying “Hello! Slashers can have three-dimensional characters and strong scripts too!!!” And the fictional shows of MTV have proven to be of good quality.

This is all sort of moot on my part anyway. Not only did I have a feeling this was all bullshit upon first reading it anyway, but BD user Caitlyn has insider info and said it’s not true, and that Scream exists as a movie in the TV show universe.

Yeah, Friday the 13th 5 and Scream share the same genre and subgenre, but are still vastly, vastly different in terms of what was on the page, what’s on the screen, who was behind the camera, and the intentions of the people behind the camera.

      • I appreciate you explaining your points without attacking me. And your points are all very good. I just read Caitlyn’s comment. Good to know.

        • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

And I appreciate you digesting what I had to say. Now let’s hope for a quality TV series.

      • Justin McGill

I appreciate as well.. that yes we did root for Sidney. But you have to admit that Ghostface was made iconic in the series even before we knew who Sidney Prescott was. And since the series isn’t following Sidney, or having any real connection. Then calling it “Scream” does seem only an exercise in marketing. And even with Jascon (yes he wasn’t in the first really either, depending on your view of the ending). But really most people don’t remember “potato sack” Jason. they remember hockey mask Jason. It was part of the visual identity, which even the movie posters themselves sold as a major component of the film. It does seem odd now stripping it out.

        • RidleyScottIsADirector@gmail.c

It’s already been confirmed that this is all bullshit, Yearbook. Your reply was unnecessary. And I don’t agree with it anyway.

  • wehoaks

What’s next? The internet without people bitching even though nothing’s been confirmed?

  • yaya

they said AS OF NOW theres no involvement. they obviously have plans to bring ghostface in at a later date. stop being brain dead morons and actually read the article and not just the title.

    • Maxime C

They will bring it to make the ratings go up, since it will obviously FAIL without Ghost Face. Scream’s identity is in the mask, the show is gonna be awful. That’s it.

    • Tim Nuttall

It is clearly just a diversion for a later shock reveal in the show itself.

      • Justin McGill

that’s like saying.. we’ll make a show about a janitor named fred in a hat and sweater.. with nothing really remarkable about him AT ALL.. Sorry, and yes I understand the (not yet) comment. But seriously? Look at the track record of Halloween III, Friday V, and any time the series went off the rails. It’d be like making a feel good young buddy comedy with the “Andy” droll from Child’s Play .. you’re just sitting and WAITING for Chucky to show up. And let’s face it, I am sure this is going to boil down to money.. so while they try and sell this on a brand name (with none of the talent involved, with none of the iconography involved). It’s not really looking good.

  • Christensen

    “as of now”

  • Krug09

Yeah i understand the as of now part. that’s kind of like saying as of now Jason will not appear in a new friday the 13th movie. just saying. Its still a possibility of Ghostface not appearing at all… and thats enough to complain over. Its fucking stupid.

  • Adam Paquette

Scream with no ghostface? No thanks. That’s like Friday the 13th part 5 or Jason Goes To Hell; people want to see Jason!

  • Dylan Summers

Oh my god just scrap this rubbish and make Scream 5 already.

    • Mikehussy

The earliest mention of “ghost-story” recorded by the Oxford English Dictionary comes from 1824.

  • Frank

Well this article really didn’t follow through did it? No solidarity at all, was expecting a real answer is all.

  • Caitlyn Gessing-Putz

You will all see soon enough that BD is wrong again. The series has been picked up and is coming to MTV. Announcement will be coming shortly.

  • The Best Murdoc

I’ll check out the Pilot or whatever if/when this show ever gets made. But I don’t think I’ll be watching for much longer than that.
